Colleagues,
What a great week! Thank you for all of your hard work. Below are some notes for next week and beyond.
Welcome to Lava Ridge! We’ve got glass! Pam and Amber have been rockin’ the new slider and the automated doors to the hallways. This is actually temporary glass and will be replaced with a safer version and locking option soon. As an additional measure of security we will also be locking the door from the lobby to the office.

It’s raining confetti! What a cool product from a buddy class collaboration last week.

Accelerated Reader-We will be launching Accelerated Reader soon! The management of AR has shifted this year to being the responsibility of individual schools so we have needed to navigate this change. More details on a start up date soon!
Battle of the Books-This year, there will potentially be two book clubs that students at Lava Ridge can choose (with parent permission) to join. These two options are Battle of the Books and Clash of the Classics. At this point we have coordinators for Class of the Classics and not yet for OBOB. Please let me know if you might be interested in leading OBOB this year. If we do not have an adult to lead OBOB this year we will try again next! The titles in both of these clubs can be located here
Shay Mikalson has set up new guidelines for book clubs at schools:
Parent permission slips are required for all book clubs
Meetings, competitions, etc. need to be completed outside of class time.
- Schools should not schedule assemblies for book clubs
- Class time, library time, etc. should not be used for competitions
- Activities connected with book clubs must all be done at voluntary times when students can choose to be there (ie. Lunches, recesses, before or after school)
Carole’s Instructional Tip for the Week to keep in mind for struggling students and our ELLs… Yazmin Flores, a fifth-grade student, shared, “It really helps me when Mrs. Gottschalk goes over the vocabulary words with us before we read.” Understanding academic vocabulary is critical for students. Students need to know the meaning of words so they can achieve grade level standards. Show them with pictures or realia (real examples.) They thrive on front-loading vocabulary before a unit or story.
2 Hour Secretary Position-To better help elementary schools offices navigate the increased time demands involved with Raptor and secure entries, Human Resources has approved all elementary schools to hire an additional 2 hour secretarial position. This is a one year position being paid with Title IV dollars.
Some of our 4th graders working away during recess and demonstrating kindness with the poster they are making for Ms. Rodriguez as she recovers from surgery. This will be delivered with meals soon.

Coaching Options for the year…link below to information from the district coaching team on some professional learning options for the year. We have budgeted for sub costs related to this professional development so please let me know if you or your team are interested in any of these opportunities.
Wow! Lots of standards and big mathematical ideas were learned in September Number Corner. One month down!

From Julianne Repmann: Nationwide Emergency System Test- On October 3, 2018, many student, staff and visitor cell phones should receive one emergency test broadcast message with an audible alert sometime between 11:18 and 11:48 a.m. This broadcast is expected go to Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) compatible cell phones that have wireless carriers that are participating in WEA, which are switched on and within range of the cell tower. These messages are set to alert the public of emergencies — including AMBER alerts and tornado or flood warnings, for example. This test is being conducted by Federal Emergency Management Agency in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission. We want to make you aware of this for two reasons:
- This could be a teachable moment for you and your students OR it could be a distraction to your teaching and learning environment if cell phones are on and receiving messages during this time.
- This is not a test conducted by Bend-La Pine Schools. This is the first nationwide Presidential-level WEA test and individuals cannot opt out.
Test Details:
During the WEA test, cell phone users should receive a single, distinct dialog box on their device, which should say “Presidential Alert” followed by “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” This text should be accompanied by a special tone and vibration, which should be repeated twice.
