October 12

Colleagues,

Below are some notes for next week and beyond.  I hope you have a great weekend!

Welcome Miriam Dunn!  Miriam was selected by our interview team this week to serve as our 2 hour secretary.

Carole’s SIOP tip of the week:  Clear explanation of academic tasks:

Three ELL’s in the second grade said that it helps them when their teachers explain things step by step.  They complimented Mrs. Gylling, Mrs. VanHorn, and Mr. Roberts.  They said that in each one of those classrooms they understand what is going on because their teachers explain things clearly. Their teachers explain tasks well and model demonstrations first before students participate.

On Hattie’s scale it is rated as a potential to considerably accelerate student achievement.

Amplify Teacher Editions-Below is a list by grade level of the units in Amplify.  Your team should have a teacher edition for each.  If you are missing one or discover you have a title that is not in your grade level strand please let Pam know.  Thank you!

Launch below to a cognitively demanding Lucy lesson on dialogue.

Mathematical sense making in 1st grade!  As teachers we know how important it is that  students understand mathematics and not just recite facts or execute computational procedures and it is cool to see this developing in our five and six year olds.

This will be the third year Bend-La Pine Schools will use the personal safety curriculum Safe Touch.  We are providing interested families multiple opportunities to learn about this safety and sexual abuse prevention curriculum  in the coming weeks.  (This info was in the newsletter and your help also messaging it home is appreciated!)

  1.  Tuesday, October 23rd at 3:45 in the Media Center families can learn about the curriculum and also preview.
  2.  During Conferences families can preview the curriculum in the Main Office and then follow up with Lybe or I with questions.

Lybe or I will be teaching Safe Touch to your students this year and will coordinate dates for instruction with your team before Spring Break.

Tech Services will be providing HDMI Splitters for our classrooms!  They have been ordered and should arrive soon.

Some role playing during a third grade SEL activity.  This instructional move really increased the cognitive demand in the lesson!

October 5

Colleagues,

Below are some notes for next week, from this one, and for others in the future…I hope you have a good weekend!

Nice job launching Lava Read this week everyone!  Below is picture from the 1st grade kick-off.

Student Learning Growth Goals:  No big changes to report this year with SLGGs.   The state of Oregon still requires all certified staff to have two goals that reflect achievement growth for all students in their class. These two goals can be shared by a team or can be set individually.   When you or your team have set your goals let’s sort out a time to meet before Thanksgiving, discuss, and sign-off on them.    Elementary SLGG Forms can be located  here or here and I will also put some hard-copies by the mailboxes.

Mini-Observations:  Last year was the first year of the new Mini-Observation guidelines developed in the summer of 2017.   Below is a re-post of the information that was shared last year:

Probationary Years (#1-3)= Six observations total. Two formal observations are required by the state. Four mini observations.  Two of the minis can be professional.

Contract Employee During Summative Evaluation Year= Six mini observations.  Four classroom observations and two professional observations.

Contract Employee in non-evaluation Year= Three mini observations.  Two classroom observations and one professional observation.

Are the Stars Aligning?  We will have to see and as we wait, mark your calendars for November 13th, 15th , and 16th when the Sunriver Nature Center will be here with their giant planetarium.   We are planning that it will be set up in different neighborhood commons each day from 1:00-3:30 so classes can visit and learn in 2o minute rotations. The ICCL Team will be working to set up a schedule and will have more details out to you before the October full moon.

Week at a Glance for October 8-12

Tuesday:

  • 8:05 Sibling Conference Schedule in the Media Center

  • No Lion Pride Drawing

Picture below of some of our 5th graders processing text.  Thank you for all of your work setting up our students with effective discourse routines!  It has been cool this week to begin hearing the  shift in our collaborative conversations from our start of the year training routines of “turn and talk” or “tell your partner” starters to more structured and cognitively demanding prompts. (ie. compare, explain, why?).

Carole’s SIOP Instructional Tip for the Week: After asking a question to an English language learner, wait for additional time for them to process the information and then respond.

Why WAIT time?  ELL’s need time to translate in their head.  It also takes time for them to formulate their response.  Most of them want to answer, it just takes longer for them.

School Psychologist Roles: With the goal of setting up our school psychologists to have the greatest impact Special Programs has created a document that prioritizes their roles.  Thank you Kelly for everything you do!

Essential Roles for School Psychologists

The 27th Annual Inventerprise Science Contest is open.  The contest is open to all Central Oregon students in grades k-12.  More information can be found at:

They’re back…Day 20 already?

To help us best navigate our first year with Amplify and assist with some staff questions,  we invited Skip Offenhauser to meet recently with our ICCL Team.   Notes from this meeting can be located here

Colleagues,

What a great week!  Thank you for all of your hard work.  Below are some notes for next week and beyond.

Welcome to Lava Ridge!  We’ve got glass!  Pam and Amber have been rockin’ the new slider and the automated doors to the hallways.  This is actually temporary glass and will be replaced with a safer version and locking option soon.  As an additional measure of security we will also be locking the door from the lobby to the office.

Thursday:

  • PTO Meeting in the Media Center @ 3:45

He’s got it!  One of our 1st graders in action developing his Habits of Mind.

It’s raining confetti!  What a cool product from a buddy class collaboration last week.

Accelerated Reader-We will be launching Accelerated Reader soon!  The management of AR has shifted this year to being the responsibility of individual schools so we have needed to navigate this change.  More details on a start up date soon!

Battle of the Books-This year, there will potentially be two book clubs that students at Lava Ridge can choose (with parent permission) to join.   These two options are Battle of the Books and Clash of the Classics.  At this point we have coordinators for Class of the Classics and not yet for OBOB.  Please let me know if you might be interested in leading OBOB this year.  If we do not have an adult to lead OBOB this year we will try again next! The titles in both of these clubs can be located here

Shay Mikalson has set up new guidelines for book clubs at schools:

Parent permission slips are required for all book clubs

Meetings, competitions, etc. need to be completed outside of class time.

  • Schools should not schedule assemblies for book clubs
  • Class time, library time, etc. should not be used for competitions
  • Activities connected with book clubs must all be done at voluntary times when students can choose to be there (ie. Lunches, recesses, before or after school)

Carole’s Instructional Tip for the Week to keep in mind for struggling students and our ELLs… Yazmin Flores, a fifth-grade student, shared, “It really helps me when Mrs. Gottschalk goes over the vocabulary words with us before we read.”  Understanding academic vocabulary is critical for students.  Students need to know the meaning of words so they can achieve grade level standards.  Show them with pictures or realia (real examples.)  They thrive on front-loading vocabulary before a unit or story.

2 Hour Secretary Position-To better help elementary schools offices navigate the increased time demands involved with Raptor and secure entries, Human Resources has approved all elementary schools to hire an additional 2 hour secretarial position.  This is a one year position being paid with Title IV dollars.

Some of our 4th graders working away during recess and demonstrating kindness with the poster they are making for Ms. Rodriguez as she recovers from surgery.  This will be delivered with meals soon.

Coaching Options for the year…link below to information from the district coaching team on some professional learning options for the year.   We have budgeted for sub costs related to this professional development so please let me know if you or your team are interested in any of these opportunities.

Coaching Options 2018-19

Wow!  Lots of standards and big mathematical ideas were learned in September Number Corner.  One month down!

*Front of School Roving Crowd Control:  Thank you for reminders to students about walking scooters/bikes, to families with dogs/other animals of our designated pet area by the fire hydrant, and helping to bring in students whose ride has not arrived yet at 3:40.

From Julianne Repmann: Nationwide Emergency System Test- On October 3, 2018, many student, staff and visitor cell phones should receive one emergency test broadcast message with an audible alert sometime between 11:18 and 11:48 a.m.  This broadcast is expected go to Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) compatible cell phones that have wireless carriers that are participating in WEA, which are switched on and within range of the cell tower. These messages are set to alert the public of emergencies — including AMBER alerts and tornado or flood warnings, for example. This test is being conducted by Federal Emergency Management Agency in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission. We want to make you aware of this for two reasons:

  1. This could be a teachable moment for you and your students OR it could be a distraction to your teaching and learning environment if cell phones are on and receiving messages during this time.
  2. This is not a test conducted by Bend-La Pine Schools. This is the first nationwide Presidential-level WEA test and individuals cannot opt out.

Test Details:

During the WEA test, cell phone users should receive a single, distinct dialog box on their device, which should say “Presidential Alert” followed by “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.” This text should be accompanied by a special tone and vibration, which should be repeated twice.

To learn more about this test, please review the following documents:

Colleagues,

Thank you for providing a rich week of learning for our students!  Below are some notes for next week and beyond…

Pac-Man!  At lunch duty I noticed this and it got me thinking of the different strategies we can use to make sure that students know and understand what they are learning.

Quick tips from our ELL’s…Carole Nase recently asked some of our ELL students “What helps you to understand what teachers want you to learn in class”?  “It really helps me when my teacher shows me what to do in my classroom. Mrs. Sultzer shows me how to write by giving examples.” Rudi Rodriguez

Rudi’s feedback connects with a big idea from SIOP: *Demonstrations provide visual support and modeling for ELL’s. * (Making Content Comprehensible… the SIOP model by Echevarria Vogt, and Short.   Thank you Carole!

From early in the week….our 4th graders using iPads to investigate helicopters and how they fly.  Go scientific process!

Fans- The fans in our classrooms do not shut off automatically.  Thank you for turning them off at the close of the day

September 7

Colleagues,

Thank you for such a great first week of school!  You all have worked so hard to get classrooms set-up, to be ready to greet families at Open House, to make the first day of school the best one ever, and then to maintain that energy and excitement throughout the week…you did it…and really, really did it well!

Raptor Registration and Volunteer Drive:  Thank you for encouraging the families of your students to register in Raptor the next time they are on campus.  The more families we can get to register (even if they are not planning to volunteer and say, just join us for the BBQ in May) speeds up the sign-in process when they come to visit or volunteer.  A state/government issued ID and 4-5 minutes of time is all it takes.  Thank you!

Volunteers:  Thank you for also reminding families that to volunteer they must do the above (Raptor registration) and also complete the volunteer application on the Bend-La Pine Schools web site.  Even if a person is just considering helping to chaperone on a field trip in the winter, I would encourage them to complete the application now.  Unless a person completed a school district volunteer application after January 1, 2018 they will need to complete a new one.  Below is the link.  Thank you!

https://bib.com/Secure-Volunteer/bend-la-pine/

Lion Pride Update and Prizes:  Thank you for your efforts recognizing so many of our Lions this week!  With the secure lobby and student traffic in mind we have continued to think through options for student turn-in of Lion Prides and the system for drawings.  We have a new plan (back to the old one) with a couple of adjustments.  Here’s the latest:

  • Students can turn in Lion Prides everyday at lunches.  We will have a 5 gallon bucket students can put their Lions Prides in before they sit down or on their way to recess.
  • Prize:  Frozen Treat with Lybe and I.  We will randomly call about 10-15 students per week.  We may have weeks when we expand the options to include other items like Papa Murphy’s,  Mountain Air, etc.

Week at a Glance for September 10th-14th

Monday:

  • All Visitors/Volunteers use Raptor beginning @ 830 AM (all families received an email about this Friday) and after 9:00, enter lobby through ADA door.   Note:  Hallway doors remain unlocked at all times (anticipating glass install around 9/17)
  • Locker Installation after 4:00

Tuesday:

  • 8:05 Staff Meeting in the Media Center
  • Locker installation after 4:00

Wednesday:

  • 8:05 ICCL Meeting
  • First School Improvement Wednesday-Student dismissal @ 2:00
  • SIW @ 2:30 in the Media Center- Curriculum Mapping for the Year

Thursday:

Friday:

  • Kindness Kick-Off Assembly @ 9:05
  • Lion Pride Drawing @ 3:15

Information below from the Transportation Department-New this year, Bend-La Pine Schools families will be able to opt into a system that will allow them track when their child enters and exits the school bus with the new Radio Frequency Identification Device cards (RFID). Participating students will receive a unique card embedded with a chip. Students will scan their RFID cards when entering and exiting the bus. The scanner will log the location and time of entries or exits. Parents can view this data using the MyStop app available for download on the Bend-La Pine Schools website.

Interested parents or guardians can fill out the RFID consent form, available at our website. Upon completion, parents can drop off the form with the Transportation Department between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. (501 SE Second St. in Bend or 16350 First St. in La Pine) or at the school office.
