Save the Date! Proficiency Day (May 4th)
The 2020-2021 school year has been a difficult one for many, and while we are happy to have all students back at school, we acknowledge that some students may still be struggling to regain lost learning or credit recovery from Semester 1. At La Pine High School, we are committed to connecting with every student who received an NG in Semester 1 and offering opportunities for learning and credit recovery so that every student can be on track as we enter summer and a new school year.
La Pine High School will be holding a “Proficiency Day” on Tuesday May 4th. Our goal for this day is for students who struggled academically during CDL, need to regain credit, or who are currently not on track to graduate to have a day to connect with their teachers. This day will be an incredible opportunity for these students to have smaller class sizes, get individualized support, develop a plan, and connect with teachers they had during Semester 1.
Students will have the chance on this day to move thru their Semester 1 schedule (all class periods 1 – 7) where they may get more individualized lessons to highlight missed content, be given direct instruction, or have an opportunity to discuss assignments they need to complete for credit recovery. Our hope is that students who received an NG in Semester 1 will leave the day with proficiency in that subject area, which may translate to an earned credit, and allow the student to get back on track academically.
Students who received an NG in one or more classes, who are not on track to graduate, or who received an email about Credit Recovery are required to join us on this day. Students will be able to ride a bus or be dropped off and be provided lunch, like a normal school day. Students will go thru their Semester 1 schedule where teachers will give instruction, directions, or develop a plan to move the student to academic proficiency and credit recovery. As well, students will have quiet, working environments with access to technology and resources to complete these tasks.
Students who are on track to graduate and/or have not received a NG in Semester 1, are excused to stay home for the day. There will be no NEW content being taught on May 4th. If students who are on track choose to attend school on May 4th, they will be provided a space for general study hall.
iPads
It was verified this week that iPads will not be turned in this June. Due to summer learning opportunities, we will ask our students to hold on to their iPads (just like they did last spring).
Hawk News!
4 JROTC Units competed in Color Guard, Drill, Marksmanship and Physical fitness on Saturday at La Pine High School. Cadets from La Pine, Mountain View, Crook County and Redmond high schools were able to showcase the efforts they have been putting into the JROTC program core competition categories. The competition season typically runs from October through April however the entire season was cancelled for the Pacific Northwest region to comply with COVID protocols. La Pine High School dominated the culminating event – a functional fitness field meet – over second place Mountain View by a decisive 5-1 score. For Freshman and other first year cadets, this was a great opportunity to see what a regular season competition looks like and for Seniors the event was their final hoorah for their time in the program.

Regional Partnership Brings Free COVID-19 Vaccine Clinics for Area High School Students
Nearly 4,000 local high school students from communities throughout Central Oregon will be eligible to take part in upcoming free vaccination clinics at local high schools, thanks to a regional partnership with local school districts, Mosaic Pediatrics, La Pine Community Health Center, St. Charles Health System, Deschutes County Health Services and Crook County Health Department.
The first event of its kind in Oregon, the High School COVID-19 Vaccination Clinics project will reduce barriers to vaccine accessibility among our youth while building healthier communities worldwide. Beginning next week, youth 16 and older, one of the fastest-growing COVID-19 positive age groups in the state, will be able to receive their first vaccine – free – at school in Central Oregon.
“This effort will remove socio-economic, language and transportation barriers – increasing access for students, thus helping to slow the spread of the virus and protect those around them – grandparents, teachers and bus drivers, family members and friends,” said Ellie Millan, PNP and Pediatrics Clinic Medical Director at Mosaic Medical. “The vaccines are powerful tools that, in conjunction with other safety measures like face masks, good hygiene and physical distancing, can help keep our schools open and students in class with their teachers and peers.”
Like their adult counterparts, youth who are fully vaccinated and are not symptomatic will not be required to quarantine if deemed a close contact to a COVID-19 positive individual – keeping fully vaccinated students in classrooms and participating in athletics, activities and other enrichment activities.
Each high school will host two clinics before the end of the school year, allowing students who choose to participate to be fully vaccinated before the summer:
Bend Senior High School: April 29 and May 20
La Pine High School: May 6 and May 27
Mountain View High School: May 4 and May 25
Crook County High School: May 4 and May 25
Summit High School: May 6 and May 27
Redmond High School: May 7 and May 26
Ridgeview High School: May 11 and June 1
Sisters High School: May 13 and June 3
Madras High School: Completed in April
Students from area private schools, alternative learning options and charter schools will be invited to attend the clinic nearest to their school location.
Summit High School senior Julia Burdsall already received a COVID-19 vaccination and is excited that high schools will host free vaccination clinics in the coming weeks.
“Being fully vaccinated is such a relief – it feels awesome!,” said Burdsall. “These free clinics at school are going to be a great and easy way for students at our high school to get vaccinated and I hope students who are eligible participate. Getting vaccinated was important to me because I want to do my part to protect my family and community.”
Julia is one of many student ambassadors who are helping spread the word to students throughout the region, encouraging fellow students to get vaccinated as soon as they are eligible.
Families are encouraged to discuss vaccinations and make a decision about their student’s participation together, and to learn more about vaccines through trusted sources such as the CDC, Oregon Health Authority, or their doctor.
“These clinics are a shining example of the incredible public-private partnerships we have in Central Oregon, where agencies are working together to help create safer and healthier communities” said Muriel DeLaVergne-Brown, Public Health Administrator, Crook County Health Department. “We are thrilled that these clinics will help our students get back closer to normal – and be able to enjoy the summer safely with their friends and families.”
Mosaic Pediatrics is the medical sponsor of the Bend, Redmond and Sisters area clinics. Deschutes County Health Services, in partnership with La Pine Community Health Center and St. Charles Health System, is delivering the La Pine area clinic. Crook County Health Department will offer the vaccine to students in Crook County.

State Testing
The United States Department of Education (ED) responded to Oregon’s strategic waiver request on Friday, March 26, 2021. ED did NOT approve Oregon’s request to suspend state testing for 2021. However, there are opportunities regarding what spring 2021 summative assessment expectations will look like in Oregon.
What we know right now:
- State testing (OSAS) is happening but the tests are shorter and not all grade levels are required to take all subjects (for HS only 11th graders are required to test)
- Opt-out procedures are the same as other years – Opt-out forms are below
- Testing window is April 13 – June 11.
- Testing data will be reported publicly but not used for accountability.

Last week of school: Some of you have wondered about what the last week of school schedule will look like this year. Now that we are all-in, and assuming we stay all-in for the remainder of this year, we will be following the original calendar during these last days of this school year. Specifically, during the last week of school, Monday and Tuesday are “regular” days, Wednesday is a “regular” (full-length) day, Thursday will be an “SIW release” day, and Friday is a work day for teachers and last day.
