Week of October 11, 2020

Hi everyone,

I hope that despite the rain, you have been able to get outside and soak up some sun this weekend. Fall is a great time for morning walks and for movie evenings😉.

If you didn’t know, yesterday was World Mental Health Day. In my world, this reminder comes at a perfect time. On Wednesday, we talked about turning our INSPIRE-LEARN-CARE triangle 120 degrees from what has been a heavy focus on LEARN (for us all), to overtly focusing on CARE. In hearing from several of our teams this week, it is clear that we are in a groove. We can start to recognize daily patterns and we can gauge the amount of time that certain tasks will take. As we continue into October and you think of all the ways to overtly demonstrate care for students, please think about what this shift means for you too.

It is obvious to Ryan and I and our families that teachers are working very hard. That said, you simply cannot stay up all night, miss dinners with your families, and spend your weekends buried in work. Although this is the most important job in the world, it is important to recognize that it is okay, and beneficial for the longevity of all of our teachers, to treat it as a job. If you are finding that there is not enough time to grade what is going out to students- spend time considering how you might redesign. If you are finding that the videos you are posting are taking too long to create, consider how you might shorten these. Remember, two things. First, this is a marathon, not a sprint. How can you redesign to be able to go the distance? Second, all of the things that teachers do are generally good. Our challenge is not to do everything but rather, to identify those actions that produce the most good. Editing is an important skill for us all to foster.

Thank you all for coming together as grade levels to discuss ways that we might lighten the load for our students as well. We are hearing from families that the Webex times are so valuable and students feel connected and supported. Perhaps, homework time may be streamlined to support our students. When we feel overwhelmed, it is easy to isolate. I urge you to reach out to your team when you begin to feel this way. The more teams can meet, share ideas, and share the load with one another, the stronger we will continue to be. I appreciate you all and am here to help if you need anything along the way.

Here are some updates to be aware of:

Notes from Wednesday’s Meeting: Please refer to this regarding our October 14th deadline for letting families know about grades. Week of October 5, 2020

Hi everyone,

I can’t believe it is October! Is seems like we are certainly in a groove and it has been wonderful to hear teachers talk about what is going well and the little efficiencies that they have found along the way. This week during our staff meeting, we will be sharing these with one another so if you have found something great, please be ready to give this information to others. Our success to this point has been dependent on all of us working together to share awesome ideas that help generate and maintain greatness. The weeks to come will be no exception. Remember that we all have something to give to our collective team of educators at PCMS whether it be nuggets to advance learning or supportive shoulders to advance care for one another. This truly is a wonderful team!

Some things to think about this week:

Reminder: Dan and Mandy have tech time set aside for teachers and students on Wednesdays from 11:30-12. Send student’s to Dan’s room for support and go to Mandy’s room for help for yourself or your team.

Canvas Tool: Here is a tool within Canvas that may be supportive as you design scaffolds and supports for your struggling readers. There may be applications to be used within World Languages as well. Please check with Amy and Kellie to better understand who would benefit from such a tool. IMMERSIVE READER

Child Care Form: Please fill out the form that came in Skip’s recent e-mail regarding needs for child care.

2020/21 Clubs: As discussed, we will begin student clubs soon. If you wish to advise or have been asked to advise a club, please enter information on this 2020/21 Pacific Crest Clubs sheet as soon as possible. Here is a Club Application form if anyone is interested in starting a Club.

Welcome Assembly: Our WEB Leaders and advisors are putting together our 1st virtual assembly and will air in advisory class on Friday, October 23 from 9:00 – 9:25. More will be shared soon. During this time, they will also discuss upcoming Spirit Weeks (end of Oct) as well as Spirit Fridays beginning in November. Our PCMS Online Store is now open to purchase Golden Eagle swag and will remain open until Sunday, October 18. The advisory that has the highest participation will receive a prize!

COVID-19 Protocols: Here is a document containing many of your questions regarding COVID-19 Protocols. Our team has been working hard to develop and systematize our protocols. If you have specific questions, please reach out to Ryan.

Flu Clinic at PCMS: On Tuesday, October 20 from 7:45 – 8:45, Rite Aid will be at PCMS to administer optional flu shots. Due to district Covid protocols, Deb has a phone call into Rite Aid regarding setting up a tent outside to accommodate your immediate family members so that they too can receive the vaccine. We will update you as soon as we find out, but please email Deb if you and your family want to participate in the clinic. The flu shot is covered by most insurances with no out of pocket expense to you. Please have your insurance card with you at the time of appointment. You do not have to carry our insurance to attend. If you have any questions regarding the vaccine, please click on the following link: https://www.cdc.gov/flu/season/faq-flu-season-2020-2021.htm

Week of September 27, 2020

Hi everyone,

It has been really fun getting into classes this week as well as seeing students and virtual classrooms continue to develop. We are working out the kinks and each day continues to get better. Thank you for making the adjustments necessary to make our Canvas classrooms cohesive and more streamlined. I recognize that this is an extra step, but I think it has been obvious to all that the more that our systems can be the same, the better experience our students will have.

This week I am in northern Minnesota as my grandmother is not doing well. As of now, my plan is to return on Sunday. Please feel free to e-mail me if you need something but know that my response time will be far less prompt than typical. In addition to being a million miles away, things like internet connections are less than reliable where I am. Ryan will likely be able to get you an answer sooner.

Here are the updates for the week:

Attendance: Some attendance-tracking troubles came up this week and will likely continue to do so as the bugs in the system are revealed through use. Please continue to do your best at tracking daily attendance to ensure it is accurate. There are a multitude of ways students can connect and, therefore, be accounted as having “Virtually Attended” your class.

If a student contacts you to tell you they have a planned absence in the future, please communicate that with Tami so that she can connect with the family to verify the absence and properly categorize it in Synergy. Parents are contacting some of you and/or Tami to dispute a student’s being marked “Not Virtually Attended” due to tech issues or otherwise and, at this point, we are going to take such calls as an indicator that the student attended your course.

Safety: The Pacific Crest Covid-19 Safety Guidelines continues to be updated as new information comes in or is clarified. Please make a habit of checking this document weekly for new additions.

WebEx: The glitches are getting fewer and far between in WebEx, but there are still some things to keep in mind about this technology.

The first is creating a space where unwanted participants cannot access your classroom. We have unfortunately had two instances where unknown participants gained entry into locked and unlocked meeting rooms, have been inappropriate, and have caused a disruption to the learning environment. If this happens in one of your meetings, please expel the offending participant from your meeting and contact Ryan or I right away. While locking your meetings causes its own set of problems (having to monitor the pop-up alert that someone is in your waiting room, for one), it is currently the most effective way of minimizing these occurrences.

The other, easier-to-manage, WebEx issue that has caused some confusion this week is that WebEx is updating its software nearly every day. This may cause it to be slow to launch on your laptop, make students unable to participate in breakout rooms, cause audio/video problems and more. A great way to combat this is to shut down, and not just shut, your laptop each night.

From Genti: Teachers are working very hard these days, prepping, recording, getting stuff ready. Now, when we use our laptops non-stop, we will have issues. So, shutting down the laptop here and there helps.

Flu Shots: We were previously told that the flu shot clinics would be available for staff members and their families. The information regarding this has since changed. Here is the current message: Be aware that family members will not be allowed to enter buildings for shots. However, your office manager may reach out to RiteAid and discuss the possibility of an outside table where family members can get the shot.  Scott B. has sent an email to office managers about exploring this option.  Otherwise, family members will have access outside resources for their shot. Please connect with Deb if you have any questions.

Canvas Support: Mandy is available each Wednesday to meet with any teachers via webex regarding Canvas questions from 11:30-12. Please reach out to any of our Canvas coaches if you are having any difficulty.

Weekly Meetings: Please log into Ryan’s webex this week for weekly meetings as well as the staff meeting on Wednesday. We will be using Canvas discussions as part of our meeting on Wednesday in an effort to practice some of the tools that are at our fingertips.

As always, thank you for making this school year special and supporting students and families as we go. They feel your support and know that you care and those two things make for happy students. Have a wonderful week and please don’t hesitate to let us know how we can support you. -L

Week of September 20, 2020

That’s a Wrap!

Congratulations!!! 🎇

You made it through the first week of school! You may be feeling like you had some glitches, things may not yet be where you want them to be but remember, school is SOOOOO much more than content alone. You provided students with connection, support, love, and learning. That is no small feat. Thank you for making this week so very special for all our young people. Our students, families, and colleagues feel connected and supported due to all the energy you have put into making each moment important. You truly are Caring, Learning, and Inspiring. On behalf of all of us and our future world, I thank you.

Here are a couple of things that I’d like you to know about as we move into next week. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Staff Introduction Folder: We’d like all staff to add a 1 minute-ish clip to the Staff Introduction Folder. We will be sharing these with our families over the next 4 weeks so they can get to know us while we’re apart.

Office Hours: All staff must be available for office hours for the entire hour on Tuesday and Friday from 1:30-2:30. This is a time that is a bit different than the other periods during the day that may only require us to be face-to-face for the first 30 minutes.

Entering the Building: Everyone MUST sign-in and sign-out when they come into the building. This includes children accompanying staff. QR Codes may be used for staff members; however, if you prefer a paper version, please follow the directions listed at the check-in table. All non-BLS staff must sign-in and out using the binder. If you have any questions, please ask our front office team.

Yearbook: Thank you to our Yearbook team (Julia and Amy Kissell) for creating memories even when we are apart. We are relying on staff and families to share photos. Please be a part of their collective creative genius by taking photos and uploading them to the following staff-shared folder 2021 Yearbook Photos Google Drive Folder. This is ONLY for PCMS staff. Do not share this link with students. I will give a different one to families.

Custodial Request: Our custodians are working to keep our areas safe and clean. Please put away any eating or drinking materials prior to leaving. They spray areas each night.

Staff Goodies to Pick-Up: Stop by Tami’s office and get the following items

    • your cornflower blue “2020/21” badge tag (a must have to be a viable BLS staff member)
    • your newly designed black and gold “Wordle Heart” staff tee
    • your personal district-issued face shield. One per staff member…sharpie your name on it!

Flu Vaccine Clinic At PCMS: During the month of October, Rite Aid is partnering with BLS for our “annual in-house flu vaccine clinics” for staff members and their immediate family members over the age of 7. We will be following strict Covid-19 protection protocol. Masks are required, 6 foot distancing and sanitation a station will be available. The flu shot is covered by most insurances with NO out of pocket expense to you. Please have your insurance card with you. You do not have to carry our insurance to attend. If you have questions regarding the vaccine, click on the following links: CDC, Local Rite Aid

Staff Leaves: If you believe that you may need to take a leave for any reason, please connect with Ryan and I. We will help you navigate this strange situation this year.

PCMS Anthems: In case you aren’t already rocking out to our PCMS Anthem playlist; Spotify Playlist, Apple Music Playlist

Canvas Support: Make sure to refer to the Canvas Help document when you have questions. It continues to be updated daily thanks to Dan, Jane, and Mandy! Additionally, this week we asked that you all take a few moments with a student to see their Canvas screens and better understand what their experiences may be. Our Canvas team will be asking for your thoughts about what you saw. Please know that we will be asking staff to adjust when we have more clarity on how we as a school can become more streamlined for students.

MS Expectations: If you have questions regarding MS Expectations, please refer to the MS Standards of Practice form and accompanying FAQ doc. These tools are dynamic and will continue to be refined throughout the year. Remember, synchronization this year is not a suggestion- it is an expectation to support all our students and families.

Hybrid Models: We have just started as a MS team to design our hybrid models for instruction. I should have more information to share with you next week. If you have questions or personal considerations that you feel I should know, please reach out to me.

Department Meetings: We will start our department meetings next week. You can find your department times HERE. We will meet in my Webex room unless you hear from us otherwise.

I told you last week and I want you to hear it again- what you have done and are doing is enough. It is not only enough- it is excellent. There is not another group of educators that I would want for our students and our future during this time. Take time to do the things you love this weekend and walk away from the computer.

Go Golden Eagles! -L

Week of September 14, 2020

And it begins!

Hi everyone!

If you are like me, you may be feeling a bit anxious right now and there are a million little loose ends in front of you for day 1. This update is simply to assure you that you are ready. What you have done is enough. We will make mistakes and we will get better. That is okay. The most important thing to think about on Monday is simply that you are in this role for a reason and there is no one better equipped for our launch on this day, in this setting, at this time in the world than you.

On Monday, it is all about connection. The kids are excited, anxious, and can’t wait to see you. Please focus on just being there for students, assuring them along the way, and making their first day the most happy and fun day it can be. Remember your first day many moons ago?

The only way you can pour out for all of our young Golden Eagles is by making sure that you are filled up yourself. Take this weekend to connect to your family, breathe deep (or maybe into a bag😉), and do the things you love with those who love you. Your well-being is the most important thing for the success of our next few weeks and as I said, you have done enough. You’ve got this!

I am proud to work alongside all of you. Please ask questions when you need help and say what you need. We will not meet as teams this week but rather, we’ll meet on Wednesday during our staff meeting time. That said, we are here for you as we get going so don’t hesitate to connect.

I’m sending all the peace and love in the world to you on this Friday night. I’m so happy to do this work with all of you. Go Golden Eagles!

Week of September 7, 2020

Hi everyone!

Here are a couple of pieces of information for you as you roll into the week.

Shout Outs: So many people to thank for this week at PCMS!

    • Jane Ward spent her Thursday evening on Facebook live with MS families across Bend in order to describe our Middle School schedule and plan. What a feat! Thanks for representing us all so well Jane!
    • Christina Johansen has been working so hard to get our schedule ready to go. Not only did she do all this work, she also had to learn it all on the fly during the past two weeks. Thank you so much!
    • Our custodial department has worked so hard to make our school sparkle. Please continue to support them by following the guidelines that Walt sent out last week.
    • Office staff: We would not be in the place we are this week withou tthe diligence of everyone in the front office. Everyone has been on the phone constantly to make sure that our families have what they need and our students are in the correct places. Thank you!
    • Jane Ward and Dan Curfew: Both of these fantasitc folks have offered to be our on-site Canvas support people. Please send yoru questions their way and they will work to find your answers.

Canvas Creation: Most pressing the week is Canvas creation. Please make sure to review this document completely regardless of your familiarity with Canvas. It outline describes what ALL PCMS teachers will do in terms of module uniformity. This is not optional when creating Canvas modules. Mandy will be having a drop in session to show what she has discovered within Canvas as she has crated modules. Please feel free to join her in her room at 9am on Tuesday for more info.

Schedules: Schedules will go live on Wednesday. This includes your list of Advisory students. Ryan will send you more information this week regarding what information you will ask families during the calls you will make to them between Wednesday and Friday

Attendance: We are working on a system for attendance and are not yet sure what it will look like. I will have clarity regarding this as part of our meeting on Wednesday.

Breakout Testing Sessions: Refer to Ryan’s e-mail last week regarding the breakout testing sessions. This will allow you to get familiar with the tool prior to launching it with students.

Staff Meeting: We will meet on Wednesday morning from 8-9 in order to give out information that comes our way. Please meet in my room.

Part-Time Counselor Opening: We have a temp, part-time counseling spot open right now that closes on Monday. This person will be teaching the 6th grade wheel. If you know of someone, please refer them to the BLP site.

Computer Monitor: Please send me an e-mail if you are interested in having a monitor in your home work space. We will use the ones from PCMS and they will need to come back upon hybrid but I am happy to get these to you if they are helpful.

There are a million more things and this is enough for now. Please feel free to contact Ryan or I for any of the questions you may have or the support you may need. I am proud to do this work with all of you. âœŒď¸&❤️ -L

Week of August 31, 2020

Hi everyone,

I’m looking forward to seeing everyone next week in my Webex at 8 am on Tuesday. We have a lot of learning to do together and I look forward to being with you all. The next few weeks will be VERY full of information so please get in the habit of checking your e-mail daily at this point because things seem to change very quickly right now. Here are some updates as we move into the new week

District Information: Lora sent out an email today so please refer to it for information regarding athletics, child care, and children in buildings during this time.

School Information:

  • Please refer to the Welcome Letter I sent last week with important information.
  • PCMS Return Week(s) Schedule: Notice that there are two Google Forms that you need to complete within this document
  • Staff Schedule for CDL
  • Virtual Meet and Greet: Please complete THIS FORM
  • We will not have a solid schedule in place until the 8th of September. If it happens before then, it will be a happy surprise. If you have any questions, come and see me.
  • Advisory is a big portion of our schedule this year. To make this time great, Mandy is working with a couple of teacher to build our school-wide lessons and structure. If you’d like to help, please e-mail Mandy and be ready to join the team meeting on Monday at 10 am.
  • Because Advisory is such an important component of this schedule and  our instructional time is impacted with this schedule, it is important that our community teams meet to discuss the method in which time will be shared between science, social studies, and ela in order to best meet the standards and priorities within the different subjects. This will mean that our science teachers will dive more heavily into being part of literacy instruction and we will receive support on this topic during our partnership with Columbia. We will meet on Tuesday afternoon at 2 in order to discuss this topic more. Please meet in my room and come with your ideas for making this the best solution for our students while supporting the ideas behind a humanities blend rather than stand alone subjects.

I know that this is a lot. Please let us know if there is any way that we can help to support you as this year begins.

Go Golden Eagles!

Week of March 16, 2020

Hi everyone! We miss you and hope you are all enjoying the sun while engaging in social distancing. I wanted to quickly connect to give information regarding what you can expect in the next few days.

This week, our office staff, custodial team, and Ryan and I are here if something comes up and you need any support. If you need to come in, you can do so; however, please know that the focus during this time is cleaning and fogging areas. If you are able to stay out of the building during this week, that is preferable but we know that sometimes things come up. Please just let us know if you need to come in and we can let our team know to plan for it.

On Thursday our MS Admin team will be meeting to gain insight as to what the week following Spring Break will look like. Because things are changing rapidly across our state, it is difficult to provide any long-term plans. Shay has asked that due to the fast-paced changes coming from our state government, principals no longer send updates to staff. He has asked that all staff receive updates from the district office instead, and you can expect the first of these to come on Friday of this week. If you have any additional questions after receiving this information, please know that you can e-mail, call, or text me and I am happy to help answer any clarifying questions. Put this number in your contacts if you haven’t already: (541) 977-8183. Information that I share moving forward will most likely be repeats of information delivered by our district office.

At this time, all staff are to report to school on Monday, March 30. This will be a time that we will be making plans for what is to come on April 1st. The plan currently includes student instruction at school on Wednesday; however, this may change in the days to come as we receive guidance from the Governor. I will continue to make information available as it comes in.

Any information to families at this time should only include optional tools to explore at their leisure. Nothing at this time can have expectations around it in terms of grading or completion. I know that some families would love to have resources during this extended time at home so feel free to share tools via synergy with which students are already familiar if you wish. If you choose to share information with families, please consider the following quote, “… foreground the common humanity present in each situation. Acknowledge that you are simply trying to bridge distance and time in the face of variables over which you have little or no control. Good intentions, good will, and a bias to connect joyfully and playfully: these intangible qualities will be noticed and appreciated.” ~Stephen Valentine and Reshan Richards

Stay safe during this extended break and please reach out if you have any questions. It’s weird here without you. We miss you all!

Week of March 9, 2020

“Better is possible. It does not take genius. It takes diligence. It takes moral clarity. It takes ingenuity. And above all, it takes a willingness to try.”
― Atul Gawande, Better: A Surgeon’s Notes on Performance

The above quote is highlighted in this week’s “Professional Readings” section as part of an excellent video. In the video, Zaretta Hammond talks about what it takes for students to become learners with an academic mindset. As I watched, I could recognize several areas where PCMS is truly excelling. There are so many ways in which our school has not rested on the status quo, but rather, because all of our teachers embody “the best at getting better”, we have been able to create excellent connections and environments for our students. Thank you for your curiosity, your willingness to dig in, and keeping your WHY at the forefront of this work. I’m proud to work with a group of people who continue to be willing to strive for what could be.

This weekend was a great time for some of our AMPLIFY students as they participated in the annual MUSE conference at the Tower Theatre. Thank you to Liza and Julia for continuing to support this club and our students as they find their voices for a better tomorrow!

This week, we have a group of 8th grade girls who will be showcasing their hard work on an app to help increase electric vehicle use in the state of Oregon. They will be presenting to PGE, Pacific Power, and other partners at the Electirc Vehicle symposium tomorrow at OMSI! When I have footage, I will be sure to share it with all of you. A big thank you goes to Dan for supporting these students along the way, including setting up several partners to meet with them to help their idea shine! Monday evening we will have our 3rd parent book club evening at the library at COCC. We have 26 parents signed up!

On Tuesday, Megan, Amanda, Lisa Z, Ami Z, and Heather W. will be part of the Continuous Improvement Workgroup at the ESD to start to design better and more equitable systems for our students in the coming years. My hope is for us to use this time to look over data, create ideas so teaching about equity (including things like historical celebrations for varying groups of people) are done in a way that is continuous at PCMS and not an after-thought during our planning. We will also be working to read through the book, Not Light but Fire to help us gain ideas for conversations in the classroom. If you have ideas or want more information, please reach out to any of these individuals.

This week we will be sending our final two groups to Camp Tamarack in 7th grade. Thank you teachers for supporting these students during their experience at Camp and thank you to those of you who have had to make adjustments to your teaching schedules to make their experience focused. Send all your vibes out to the universe for NEW SNOW! We want to sled!

On Thursday, we will have a vertical choir concert at Summit at 6:30. Please come and support your singers if you are able. Melissa puts on quite a show and it is incredible to see our students show their work alongside former Golden Eagles. I look forward to these each year!

Next Friday we will be having an assembly to honor students who are doing great things outside of PCMS that may not otherwise get recognized. If you know of a student who is excelling in a non-traditional sport or another way within our community, please let me know so they can be recognized. I am also looking for 4 staff members who are willing to be part of a blind basketball toss competition.

Finally, I am continuing to gather information regarding staffing for next year. If you have questions at any time or if you are interested in something different regarding your assignment for next year, now is the time to come and talk to me. After preliminary numbers are in, it appears that we are currently set to decrease in numbers by about 80 students overall. This will impact how we structure things next year and I don’t yet know how. Once I receive my staffing after the board approves the outline, I will have more information. Again, I am happy to share with you any and all information that I have as soon as I can. If you are curious at all during the next few weeks, please connect with me.

Thank you for Learning with, Caring for, Inspiring our students and one another each day. Go Golden Eagles!

Week of March 2, 2020

It is with so much gratitude and joy that I feel lucky to wish a HAPPY CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEE’S WEEK to all of our incredible, selfless, loving, and dedicated classified staff members!!! I know I speak for everyone when I say that we are lucky to have all of you and your expertise at our school. Our school cannot run nor can we create the amazing experiences that we do for students without your excellence each day. Thank you all for being the heartbeat in our Golden Eagle family.

This weekend we were able to raise $2,231 for our Sparrow with our school Show a Little Love Rummage Sale. Thank you to all who brought, bought, and volunteered to make this a successful event for Alaric and his family!

We have our first groups that leave for snow school this week. Seventh grade teachers: please remember that while students are at camp, they are not to be responsible for any classwork during these days. They are, in essence, at school doing their work during this time. Please adjust these weeks for 7 days of instruction rather than 10.

This week is a bit different than I anticipated as my grandfather passed away last week just a day short of his true 100th birthday. I feel lucky to have been with him less than 2 weeks ago for a birthday party to celebrate him. It truly was a send-off and I feel lucky to have had a wonderful grandfather for 39 years. I am currently in Minnesota for his funeral and to help my family with everything that goes along with this process. I will return on Wednesday evening. Until then, I will try to respond to e-mails each evening if possible and please connect with Ryan for any immediate questions.

Thank you for all you do for our Golden Eagles!
