SLC FOLLOW UPS
First off, a HUGE thank you to all the teachers and staff members who ran student led conferences over the past few days. I know it was new to many of you, and for all of us it can be a bit of a big lift to help students prepare for and complete one of these successfully! So thank you for your efforts prior to and during that last few days!!
Secondly, I hope that the conversations you got to be a part of were productive and fruitful in term of relationship building and in terms of academic growth around students owning their academic journey and being “leaders of their own learning”!
Follow Up: Student/Parent “Pass Alongs” and Staff SLC Plus Delta:
- Part 1: If something came up in one of your conferences that you think another teacher or our counseling team or our admin team need to hear, please enter it on this SLC follow up spreadsheet. For example, maybe you heard a student or parent express an appreciation for a particular teacher/subject, or maybe you heard a student asking for help in a particular area, or some other concern/idea. Rather than “sit on that info”, please enter it here and we can make sure the information is heard/seen by those who might most benefit. Link above.
- Part 2: Before next Wednesday’s SIW (which is dedicated to intensives by the way) could you please enter your thoughts on what went well and what could be revised around our SLC process. We want to design our 2nd round to keep what worked and make any changes to improve the process. Your feedback is critical!

Assessing Conferences in Crew Gradebook & Missed Conferences
- We do encourage you to enter a grade(s) for SLC’s into the Crew gradebook
- This week during Crew it would be great to have students complete THIS SELF ASSESSMENT RUBRIC and you can use that score to enter a grade in your crew gradebook. The other benefit of this is that students can ALSO look back at this 1st trimester self assessment as they prepare for another SLC in their future!!
- Gathering Student Feedback in Crew: If you are willing, I think it would also be excellent to capture STUDENT plus delta feedback capture student feedback in a +/∆ as well! Here is a SLC STUDENT FEEDBACK FORM (Google Form) that would be excellent to share with students in Crew – it should only take 5 minutes to complete. You are also WELCOME to facilitate a Crew discussion and then capture student feedback directly into our Staff PLus Delta above.
- Missed Conferences: If a student missed their conference, we suggest that you have those students submit their prep materials for you to use to make a grade judgement. This should be accompanied by an explanation as to why they missed their conference. Their grade should be impacted by a missed conference UNLESS their explanation is substantial (for example family access)
- As Crew teacher you have discretion here – students who missed their conference could make it up with you on WebEx, they could have a mini, face to face conference with you, they could record something… or simply submit their materials. YOUR CALL however we encourage you to build a culture of accountability around these conferences for the future!
INTENSIVES REMINDERS!!
GUEST EXPERTS:
If you are planning on having any visitors or guest experts need to be reported ASAP to Yen Ling and Jennifer. ANY AND ALL visitors/guests need to be approved by Roger/Zach!! Officially, our BLSD campuses are still closed to outside guests however with Admin approval we CAN OK some guests, depending. IT IS BEST IF YOU CAN MEET WITH GUEST EXPERTS OUTSIDE! However, if you need them to come inside, please let us know. Guests who have the potential to be alone or unsupervised with students must complete the background check. Others just need to be approved by Admin.
SENIOR RETREAT!
We have our 1st class retreat this year on WEDNESDAY this week!
We DO expect seniors to be present for the first 45 minutes of Period 1, and to be no more than 5-10 minutes late for Period 5. However, they will be missing all of Periods 2 and 4.
Where will they be? At a half-day Senior Retreat at Hollinshead Barn! They will be doing some culture-building, senior project logistics, and small team work sessions related to spring events. We feel that this type of event is LONG overdue!
At the moment we have Kem, Roger, Jen R and possibly Harju as staff on the retreat. We are hoping Allie and Woo can join as well and are awaiting confirmation. If one of those two can’t do it, please let us know if YOU are interested in helping facilitate!!
