SIW SWAP IS OFFICIAL!
We are meeting this Wednesday in our SIW to move forward with our Habits of Work Teams – thanks for being willing to “make the switch”! Our SIW Planner now reflects that this coming Wednesday is “school directed” and we have therefore swapped Wed March 30th from “school directed” to “teacher directed!
Amy’s ask for HOW Learning Targets:
In preparation for SIW, next Wednesday, can you please provide some (2-5?) of your recent contextualized HOW’s (Habits of Work) Learning Targets from your class.
Please put into THIS GOOGLE DOC by the end of the day Monday.
Our Current SIW Project around HOW’s: is all about how we TEACH Habits of Work and about how we “REINFORCE” the Habits of Work to the small number of students who are struggling to master the HOW skills we are teaching. The teaching side of the HOW coin is, in many ways, equally if not more important than the enforcing/reinforcing side. We can’t just expect that all of our students have all the HOW skills they need to succeed… we must continue to teach these skills by naming, practicing, breaking down, modelling, discussing, applying, reflecting, and assessing in ways that are creative, experiential, rigorous, and engaging… just like our subject content!
A-B CLASS SPLIT DECISION!
There was reasonably solid support for mixing up our A-B groupings at semester, so lets go ahead and DO IT! Given the feedback, it makes sense to REMIX all three grades and to do a “full” remix, though obviously it will make sense to factor in the value of keeping certain supportive and positive friendships or friend groups together while creating opportunities for change.
Here were the top reasons you mentioned:
- unbalanced classes academically may hinder certain more academically capable students
- there are a few unhealthy social interactions to split up which might help these individual kids
- new groups might help teachers with current classroom management struggles
- opportunities for some new friendships
- “new start” might also provide opportunity to “reset” teaching practices and classroom management strategies/expectations
In lieu of 8th grade MTSS meeting this Wednesday AM, I suggest we have 3 grade level teams meet to draft new grade level splits. These can then be reviewed by other staff (including Amy and Delaney) and finalized by end of week, giving Kelly the week of January 31st to get Synergy built.
I will send a calendar invite for anyone who wants to contribute.

YOUTH TRUTH STAFF SURVEY

So far, we have had just 4 staff complete it. Teachers AND Ea’s – please complete – THANK YOU 🙂

GRADING AND PLANNING DAY – FEB 4TH
Thursday Feb 3rd is the last day of the semester and Friday February 4th is a “no student” Grading and Planning day. Here is what you need to know:
- Final Progress Reports should be emailed out that day and grades would be POSTED by the end of the day Friday! LINK TO INSTRUCTIONS FOR:
- EMAILING HOME FINAL PROGRESS REPORT
- POSTING GRADES TO TRANSCRIPT
Breakfast and Visioning Together With RHS Staff: I would LOVE to have the middle school team join the high school team for breakfast and a little “vision building” on Friday morning (likely 8:00 – 9:30). Because this day is really reserved (by contract) for your grading, I am making this breakfast and vision session over at the high school optional AND I will timesheet those who decide to attend an extra hour! Hope you can join us!
3RD QTR ENRICHMENT CHANGES
Lynda is hard at work preparing for 3 qtr Enrichment which means building student lists AND making programmatic tweaks.
OUR ASK OF ENRICHMENT TEACHERS:
Current MATH enrichment team (JAKE, DELANEY, ____ ) will be onboarding a NEW ENRICHMENT TEACHER and pivoting to 7th grade kids!!! My ask is to consider ways that you can help that person so that once they are in place… you can check in and support. This person will be teaching the “upper math” section so in some ways it should be a slightly easier lift, but still….!
Current LITERACY enrichment team (LAURIE, STEPHANIE, ___) will be ALSO onboarding a NEW ENRICHMENT TEACHER and pivoting to 8th grade kids!!! Our ask here is that you sit with Lynda or Roger to help plan… what will the new Enrichment teacher be doing as you transition to 8th grade? What are each of YOU doing and how can we set up the new Enrichment teacher NOW for success??
Current ELECTIVE enrichment team (Caleb, Brenna, Amy, Ian C) will be pivoting to 6th grade kids!!! We have some NEW ideas for Caleb and Becca and this team will need some time with Lynda to get coordinated!!!
