3rd trimester fieldwork overview calendar!

Mary Dailey has been hired for the rest of this year as the replacement for Michelle as she sails away into retirement! Welcome to the team Mary!

Mary comes to us with 9 years of experience as a HS ELA teacher at Lake Oswego HS and also as an MTSS Coordinator in California. Mary doesn’t have a live District account yet, but when she does it will be [email protected].

Mary starts officially on April 1st, the Monday after Spring Break!

Friday, April 12th is a non-student PD Day. Here are a few agenda items to look forward to:

  • Quality Work Protocol
  • YouthTruth Data Review
  • 2024-25 Master Schedule Input
  • SBAC Training

For those who are new or who could use a refresher, the Quality Work Protocol is an EL Education protocol that we run every year. It is a Carousel-style protocol in which teachers bring examples of student work from their classes to share with one another. This is NOT about rating the work, but rather about the attributes of High Quality Work (Craftsmanship, Complexity, and Authenticity) and providing an opportunity to have school-wide discussions about our practices and priorities.

To be prepared for this session, all teachers should plan to bring:

  • 2 different pieces of student work – one meeting proficiency, one below – for the same assignment. This should be longer-task work… something that took students somewhere from 3 days to a week or two to complete. We encourage you to bring something different from last year, and bring something more recent if possible (trimester 2).
  • 1 teacher artifact along with the pieces of student work. This could be a task description, rubric, or lesson.
  • Support staff, know that you won’t need to bring artifacts but you will be involved in the protocol.

Here is a summary of testing dates. These dates are also on the outlook calendar.

While we don’t want to sacrifice too much instruction time for standardized testing, we also know that practicing with students leads to higher testing scores. Higher school-wide SBAC test scores will be helpful in continuing to recruit academically advanced students! Here are a few resources for preparing students:

  1. Sample & Training Tests – this will help students know what to expect on test day, which could lower testing anxiety and result in better performance.
  2. Smarter Balanced Sample Items Website – to use this site, select “Browse Test Items.” Once you have selected a few test items, select “Print Cart” where you can export the questions you selected (and answer keys) as a PDF.

Training Time will happen during 4/12 PD day and will include the following items:

  • Logging in (new password each year) and navigating TIDE
  • Secure Test Browser (getting it onto student devices)
  • Other testing materials (SSID’s, gum, scratch paper, computers, headphones)
  • Sign TA training certification
  • Room management tips/agreements

Staff to attend: Eric, Delaney, Laurie, Phoebe, Lynda, Dante, Lauren, Anita, Caleb, Grey

Every year we have the opportunity to select one classified and one certified staff member to recognize with the Excellence in Education Award. Our nominee also goes on to be considered for the District wide Teacher of and Classified Person of the Year Awards.

If you would like to nominate a colleague for either or both of these awards we’d love to hear from you! Nominate someone right here no later than Wed April 3rd!

Wandering students who have class!

We’ve seen an increase in students in unsupervised “wanderings” lately and want to ask you to remember that if you have students in class, please supervise them. Some examples:

  • “I am done with my work so my teacher said I could shoot hoops or play volleyball” – this is not a pattern we want to see. We know this is a tough one, but please consider what kind of extensions the student may need and keep them in your class.
  • If you need to give a student a “walk a lap break” from class please be sure they have a pass from you and a specific time to return.
  • If you want students to work outside your classroom, please have them work at tables outside your room so you can keep an eye on them.

Staff Duties!

Please be sure to be present for your duty AND if you have a sub, be sure that either your sub is aware of your duty or connect with a peer or the admin team so we can cover it for you!

Here is the Trimester 3 Duty Schedule. Please review, and note that yellow boxes are new assignments and pink are the same as trimester 2. If you believe there is a mistake, or that you aren’t going to be able to cover a duty assigned to you (or if something doesn’t seem fair or right), please let Harju know and he will look at finding a swap. We’ve tried to keep duties evenly spread, and AM/PM duties backed up to prep periods.

Open Period High Schoolers!

As we hit Spring, we are trying to clean up our high schoolers with an Open Period, as they tend to attract friends who are supposed to be IN CLASS! Open period students need to be either in:

  • front commons
  • cafeteria
  • off campus

We are allowing (FOR NOW) open period students to play pool or ping pong in the cafeteria. We’d prefer them to stay on campus than leave and not come back! We will put signs that at the tables that they are for OPEN PERIOD STUDENTS ONLY (except at lunch).

  • Certified staff can now take leave (sick, personal etc.) in 1 hr increments… it used to be 4 hour increments, so that’s GOOD! Note that subs are still only hired in 4 or 8 hour increments.
  • ALL Leave MUST be entered into UKG. Here are the things to know:
    • enter your leave into UKG before the date whenever possible, but for emergency sick leave, entering it after is OK
    • you must enter leave for sick leave, personal leave, fieldwork outings, District meetings… basically ANY TIME you are away from your “normal classroom, in person and on site duties”
    • for school business leave, PD leave, fieldwork leave, PLEASE ENTER A NOTE in the system with details (for example… “School Business – District Science Priority Standards work w/ Dean Richards. Sub paid for out of Dean’s budget”) this way Jennifer knows what its for and how to code the costs
  • When entering extra time on your timesheet PLEASE ENTER A NOTE explaining the extra pay
    • for example, when covering for a colleague, you now get paid! Enter… “subbed 2 hours for Jane Doe who was on fieldwork, (or, who was out sick) science and math”
    • if there is some other extra pay arrangement, please refer to the pre-approlval from RW and whatever the activity was for ex “2 hours extra honors planning work approved by RW”
