CURRICULUM RETREAT – FINAL UPDATES
We are excited to get an early start with many of you next week!
OVERVIEW: The retreat is aimed at providing support, professional development and planning time around the creation and tuning of learning expeditions in grades 6-10. We will have a mix of “student hat time” during which we will be experiencing mini versions of key expedition structures and then supported team planning time. If you want to “peek behind the curtain” you can see our in process planning agenda for the three days here
The afternoons are focused on PLANNING! We have set up some “expedition teams” and you can see them in THIS LINK. During that time we are aware that some of our Student Success folks like Addy, Kat, Brandon and Delaney will likely NOT be doing curriculum design work but rather will engage in some other “systems level work” – we will identify this work together on Monday, but come with your ideas!
Most folks (those who signed up in June) have already been paid for the three days on their summer paycheck. For those who joined in late, we will create a “sign in sheet” to make sure you get compensated!
Here are a few LOGISTICAL UPDATES:
- Day 1: Tuesday, 8/22 at Seventh Mountain Resort. We will be meeting in the Jefferson Room which is in the same building as the bar/cafe and is the building overlooking the “skating rink” on the west side of the rink.
- Please be there and ready to start at 8:30. We will spend some time inside and outside! We will provide coffee and some snacks, but please plan to bring your own lunch or eat at The Outfitter Bar (at the resort).
- Day 2: Wednesday, 8/23. We will meet at Ryan Ranch, spend the morning doing some fieldwork (we will explain this more on Day 1), then move back to Seventh Mountain for the rest of the day. We will provide lunch this day!
- Day 3: Thursday, 8/24 at Realms Campus. Again, we will have coffee but lunch is on your own
AUGUST INSERVICE WEEK AGENDA
The OFFICIAL start of school is fast approaching and we have been at work planning for an effective and impactful Inservice Week. It is always a REALLY BUSY WEEK, so we advise taking a look at the schedule and planning accordingly.
Here is the agenda for Inservice week. We don’t expect it to change (much?!), but past experience suggests that it might, so “beware of printing.” If you notice any issues please reach out to Zach or Roger ASAP!
Please know that you are welcome to come in early if you want to get a jump start on setting up your classroom or to work on curriculum or any other to do’s… but also know… “WE SUPPORT SUMMER” so stay in summer mode if you can! 🙂
MASTER SCHEDULES/BELL SCHEDULES
On this sheet you can now see both master schedules, the bell schedule, Crew grade level assignments, and shared staff/part timer schedules.
Again, we don’t anticipate any changes on here! If you think you’ve found an issue we might have overlooked please let us know ASAP!!
NEW LAPTOPS – WE HAVE 9 UP FOR GRABS
All of our certified staff are currently on reasonably up to date Apple M1’s> however, as usual we get a refresh of new laptops every year, and they can be used to swap out certified teacher laptops. The ones that get traded in our moved into our supply for student laptop carts and used for our amazing classified team as needed.
If you want a new laptop, please simply REPLY below in the form. Since everyone is on a machine that is pretty similar in age, we thought we’d let you choose! Some folks like their machine as is and are “hesitant” to get a new one. Other folks are more comfortable transitioning. Killian (our new and amazing tech guru) makes the process of swapping out laptops INCREDIBLY easy! No backing up needed – you just have to give up your machine for an hour and he will copy it as is to a new machine.
If you’d like your laptop refreshed, complete his form!
FALL INTENSIVES AT RHS
Here is our current DRAFT of Intensive Assignments for the Fall. There is more work to do here and we will be working with Yen Ling to get things dialed in. If you have an idea for a new Intensive that you think will be popular, please reach out to Yen Ling or Roger. One thing we noticed in the “forecasting” of Intensives last Spring is that some of our repeat offerings are getting fewer 1st and 2nd choice sign ups…. maybe the kids who were interested in that particular Intensive have already taken it once or twice.
Bottom line – new Intensives that will be popular and engaging for HS kids are WELCOME! Let us know if the creative juices are flowing!
CREW AT RHS THIS YEAR
Many of you at the High School might have received an email (roortwo) from EL Education referencing a Crew Curriculum Pilot and one titled EL Education Inc – CoreSource Download Link. The latter is legit… it contains a link to an ebook version of EL’s book “We Are Crew: A Teamwork Approach to School Culture”.
There are a few pretty cool changes on deck for high school crew this year. We will be setting aside time in Inservice Week and throughout the year during SIW time to support these initiatives.
- Three crews at every grade level!
- A new EL Education high school pilot Crew curriculum, and we are participating. More info to come during inservice, but if you want to preview the 1st month worth of lesson plans to choose from, they can be found here. You do NOT need to fill out the form on the opening page, I have done that for you! This is NOT a full year’s worth of lessons, but WILL provide a good jump start to the year!
- A refreshed and improved Wayfinder Activity library that we have access to and will get some training on. Use as you see fit!
- College credit articulation for Senior Crew with COCC’s HD 104 College and Career Transitions class
- Student Run Club Fridays! More details on this coming… we have a plan documented out but are sharing it with Allie Chiavetta (our new Activities Director!!) first!
