10-2-20 Staff Update

Students of Concern

Thanks for working last week together to plan our Students of Concern process. I have captured some important notes from that conversation here. Please take a few minutes to read through them!

Once you have read these notes (especially the reminders on “how to use the sheet”), then please be sure to update the SOC sheet prior to 2PM on Tuesday.

I will review the data between 2pm and 4pm and set up a couple of EBISS “staffing teams” to dig into specific kids (with a protocol).

NEW PARENT NIGHT – Staffing and Plan Review

Here is the overall agenda with links to slides for components. I will set aside some time on Wednesday afternoon to finalize this planning!

For those that don’t have a 9th or 10th grade Crew, I have paired you up!

MORE TO COME!

TECH SUPPORT – Helping clarify the “lanes”

I am hoping to clarify some of the WHO and HOW of tech support for you as staff and for students. This is still a bit of a fluid situation, and we are trying to balance the load, ask the right people the right questions etc.

LISA JOHNSON – TIER 1: Lisa’s main role right now as our Tier 1 person is to help students/families:

  • get/replace/repair ipads, covers, cords
  • troubleshoot ipads that aren’t connecting to internet, don’t have self service
  • troubleshoot basic Bend LaPine account issues that students might be having
  • Typically Lisa is more limited to “my iPad is not functioning properly” issues and NOT on “I am not sure how to use this specific app” issues

LAURA CLARK – INSTRUCTIONAL TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT. Laura’s role is to support teachers with any questions OR problems they (or their students) are experiencing with instructional apps like WebEx, Google Drive, Canvas, Go Formative, YouTube, etc etc. Individual teachers CAN email Laura questions.

HEIDI DIXON: Canvas Coach Heidi will be a support person to help our teachers get better at using Canvas and can also be a support person as you are trying to help students troubleshoot Canvas issues. Heidi can move it up the food chain to Laura if she is stuck!

BRAD WALER – SITE TECH: Brad is really the go to back up support person for LISA AND ROGER. The only time (I think) that a teacher would go directly to Brad is if they were having a hard time with a piece of classroom tech hardware (example: digital projector, doc cam, or teacher laptop, printer). I recommend going through JENNIFER first on these issues and she may punt it up to Brad.

Election Message for Teachers – read this.

As usual, it is good to remember the legal constraints around discussing the upcoming election in class. Since families can now overhear what we say in class, this becomes potentially even more important! Please READ: election message and an election guidance flier

$1000 Classroom Grants – And An Offer From Me

I am ALWAYS happy to collaborate with one or more of you on a grant application for ANYTHING that you feel like you want to fund, try out, or develop. This one, for up to $1000.00 is coming up soon-ish, due October 31st!:

SPARK! Creative Learning Grant applications are open

1st TRIMESTER INTENSIVES – your input please.

Jen and I would like to proceed with “planning our plan” for Intensives this trimester! However, given the exceptional circumstances, it seems prudent to check in before we just assume that we are going forward in an “as usual” way.

Can you please give us your input and thinking on Intensives using this survey. To be clear, Roger will review the results of this survey and make an informed decision about our direction… this is one of those “Level 2 Decisions” on the 5 Levels of Decision Making Scale (I decide with lots of your input).

Here is your venue/survey for the 1st round of input! Please share your input now, or no later than end of day Tuesday.

SAFETY UPDATES!

New Mask Requirement:

A cloth, paper, or disposable face mask that covers the nose and the mouth is the requirement for all BLS students and staff with some exceptions. When exceptions apply, a face shield is permissible, but other safety practices should be implemented, such as more than 6 feet of social distancing and/or added ventilation of fresh air. The exceptions are described below:

  • For provisions applicable to staff/students protected by ADA or IDEA (details from RSSL referenced below).
  • For safety reasons, such as a bus driver whose glasses are fogging up when attempting to wear a mask under specific weather conditions;
  • For specific and time-limited instructional needs such as speech and language, LIPS reading group, ELL lessons or other examples when viewing a teacher’s or student’s mouth is essential to that portion of the lesson. As soon as possible within the lesson, masks should replace the shields;
  • For younger children moving into in-person education who exhibit severe emotional dysregulation when wearing a mask, staff should employ strategies to transition them from shields into mask wearing: mindfulness exercises, increase in the frequency of outdoor mask breaks, and other trauma-informed best practices.
  • People who are deaf or hard of hearing, or those who care for or interact with a person who is hearing impaired.
  • Other time-limited exceptions of short durations may be made with administrative knowledge.
  • A clear mask is an acceptable option, as is the use of a shield over a mask for added protection

CLEANING ROUTINES: Many thanks to the dynamic duo of Nole Kennedy and HDMS lead custodian, Tim Bennett, for creating this “How To” video instructing staff on the daily cleaning routines of desks/tables.

I am revising, again! Has that been happening to you with your lesson and curriculum planning as you adjust to the new realities of CDL!!??

Stay tuned – I will get my revisions out soon. Know that the revisions only address Wednesday afternoons, not our 4:00 – 4:30 plan for afternoons and our Staff Crew on Friday AMs.
