Last Horizontal of the Year Next Week!
Our last horizontal of the year will be this next Tuesday, the 13th starting at 3:00 at Dana’s house! That’s right, we’ll be meeting out in the country in a serene location, surrounded by colleagues and friends. While we still have some topics to address (yes, it’s still a meeting) we hope to keep it shorter than usual and will break out the coolers and treats as soon as it is over, celebrating that we have nearly made it through what was a darn tough year! Dana’s house is located out highway 20 at 62880 Dickey Road (take the left side of the driveway to her house). Please bring a lawn chair!
Counseling Celebration: On Friday June 2nd, counselors gathered in the level groups to celebrate their school counseling program. During our time together, counselors delivered short presentations to share data and program updates that looked at how students are different as a result of school counseling programming. In alignment with the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), school counselors evaluate and share the results of their programs impact and effectiveness with key shareholders. We are so grateful for those that were able to attend our celebration. If you weren’t able to attend, we encourage you to meet with your school counseling team to go over their data and slides.

From Lora re: part-time schedules – The district recognizes that creating schedules for part-time staff can be challenging, and these staffers’ schedules have been the subject of numerous complaints and grievances. This guidance is intended to help administrators create schedules that comply with our employee agreements. Your level leaders are available to review schedules, as well, if you have questions.
2023-24 SIW Schedule – Here is the SIW schedule for next year. Thank you Stephen Duval for putting this together.
The Red Zone – Things to definitely read, do, share, or put on your calendar
Revised Request To Hire Guidance – We are removing the Hiring Checklist from the request to hire process as of Monday, June 5th [insert cheer]. The instruction video has been re-recorded to reflect this and we’ve also updated where to change a candidate’s hiring stage from Applicant to Request to Hire as the old video became outdated when UKG performed a software update last month.
UKG and Hiring Season – Please reference UKG Job Requisition, Interview Prep, Applicant Screening and Hiring Tips as we enter into peak hiring season. We have important information about ICCL hiring in this document (cut/pasted below). Within the document is also access to a Veteran’s Preference report where you can easily view which external candidates are veterans.
REMINDER: Certified Temporary/Probationary 1 & 2 and Contract Staff of Concern
As you complete Summative Evaluations, it is imperative that you note any performance deficiencies in both the domain/standard rating AND in the summary section at the end.
You may use language like,
- “Teacher AB does not meet performance expectations in [insert any/all that apply]”
- “It is necessary that AB becomes effective in these domains”
- PROBATIONARY/TEMPORARY ONLY: “Failure to meet performance objectives will result in probationary non-renewal at the conclusion of the following school year or failure to move from probationary to contract status by March of year three”
- “Teacher AB will be placed on Focused Performance Evaluation at the beginning of the upcoming school year” [or insert Support Strategies if you’ve already completed the Focus Perf. step]
HR will be contacting administrators in August/September to identify probationary teachers of concern.
iPads at Home clarification – only send the permission form out if a family asks to keep theirs . Please don’t do a blanket announcement in your newsletter. Thanks! (fyi – permission slip is in process of being translated).
End of year conversations – please use this link to sign up for an end of year conversation with Skip and Tammy. These will start next week and conclude June 23rd. We think we have plenty of time slots available for everyone. But if for some reason you can find one that works let us know. This is also your reminder to complete your self evaluation found in TalentEd – get’r done!
Flier about Summer Reading – If you get the below flier from the Deschutes Public Library you may put it on your community board but please do not make copies and send it out to families.
From Walt – Since we are getting closer to summer, it’s time for our custodial crew to start firing up for summer clean. One thing that happens every year that is an issue, is the teacher’s personal items left in the classroom. Because of security, safety and personal reasons custodial will not be handling them. This soft furniture, bookshelves, rugs, aquarium’s, plants, animals etc. shouldn’t be a custodial responsibility to clean and is ultimately a risk if there is breakage, missing or otherwise. Please encourage teachers to take their personal items home for the summer. The custodial crew thanks you!
From Magadalyn Hasse – Just a reminder to please send Magadalyn a list of your 2023 -2024 504 coordinators. She would like to have this list before the end of the month if possible.
Please forward to your teachers: OSU Teacher Training in Corvallis 6/26-29 | Ethnic Studies Standards
- The Ethnic Studies Summer Institute will take place at Oregon State University, Corvallis Campus, June 26-29. Our program will equip participants from varied subject matter areas to understand and fulfill the new ethnic studies requirement. To ensure relevance and engagement for both teachers and students, we’ll take a dynamic, interactive approach centered on Oregon communities.
Teachers will leave this experience with an understanding of the state’s ethnic studies standards and practical strategies to implement those standards with a curriculum that is site-specific, historically-informed, and inclusive of students and communities all too often overlooked by mainstream U.S. history and social studies.
Note: This professional development opportunity provides 30 hours of instructional time. Space is limited! Visit this page to learn more about our Ethnic Studies Summer Institute.
From Lora re: 23-24 Work Calendar – If you haven’t already shared this with staff please do so Beginning of the Year Work Calendar
From Roy Fuller re: ipad roll in – It’s time to roll in iPads for the summer. Please distribute the following slides in hopes that teachers will take a moment to go over it with their class before checking in iPads for the summer. Not only does this effort get a jump on rolling out ready-to-use iPads in the fall, it also introduces organizational skills of digital materials. Realistically, most students in grades 3 and up will be able to follow along and accomplish the tasks. Schools might want to employ some tech buddies to help with the process for younger students.
Here are the slides for kids to follow:
For a complete view of what’s happening district-wide, check out the Spring iPad plan. Take a look at BLS tier one page or reach out to your site tech with questions.
