My apologies – I think I may have passed on some incorrect information about hybrid and concerns parents may have. Below are some talking points from Lora. Please take note of the fourth bullet point. This is where I think I gave incorrect info.
Moving to Hybrid – Key talking points from Lora….Why can’t students stay in CDL and work with their classes remotely when other students move to balanced/hybrid instruction? :
- In a balanced/hybrid model, each week our teachers will prepare for five days of instruction: two days of in-person instruction and three days of distance instruction. If our teachers were also responsible for supporting the students who were not attending in person, this would add two additional days of distance instruction to their preparation responsibilities. This is an unreasonable burden to place on our teachers, who are already working very hard.
- In this model, the activities on the distance days will complement the activities that occur during in-person instruction. So a student who misses the in-person days may not be prepared to be successful on the distance-day activities.
- The district has a well-established program, Bend-La Pine Schools Online, that is intentionally developed as a long-term option for students and families who need distance-learning options.
- All this being said, if a family’s issue is starting October 5th instead of October 26th, I’d recommend that they stay in CDL and just start attending in person the week of the 26th. Families need to recognize that the teacher will not be providing any more materials on the in-person days than he/she would if a student were absent from school because of illness.
A-B Cohorts – I really, really, really need to know if you have your cohorts done sooner than Thursday. In fact anyone that can get their cohorts done by Monday afternoon might get a present from me. The work that transportation has to do once the cohorts are completed is huge and we need your help to help them.
Transition Week Stay with 1/4th each day – For transition week we had some discussions about bringing in half your class each day instead of 1/4th of your class each day. While I understand that some of your classes are very small so brining in half is not a problem, but for the sake of consistency I would ask that you stick with the plan of bringing in 1/4th of a class each day.
Open Classrooms? When we transition from CDL to Hybrid the childcare program at your site will need to be relocated. Until we go hybrid for all students two locations in your building will be needed. Once we go hybrid for all k-5 students this can be reduced to one classroom. What we need to know is how many open classrooms you have in your building. If there is a classroom that is not being fully utilized (ie it is used for small groups several times during the day, or for storage) then that classroom is considered open and available for childcare. Please complete this survey on how many open classrooms you have. Thanks.
Just a reminder – Leave Sheets are due by Monday, September 21st. The dates for this time period are: 8/17/2020 – 9/20/2020. Please let Amy Stafford know if you have any questions.
Something for you to follow up on … Whether we are in CDL or hybrid it’s important that we follow up with teachers about their schedule. What support do they need? What questions do they have? Are they following the grade level timeframe for the different learning blocks?
Substitute Guidance for CDL
- If a teacher is sick for one or two days there are a couple of options. One, the teacher can do his/her best to get information and work out to students. If a teacher attempts to teach, then the teacher doesn’t need to take a sick day. If the teacher is sick and can’t do any work, then that teacher needs to take a sick day.
- If a teacher is sick for more than two-three days, then the teacher and administrator need to try and get information out to students the best way possible. This will probably mean having someone that works close to that teacher help get information out to students. If this happens, please have the teacher that helps complete a timesheet for the work.
- Long-term substitutes. We will continue to use long-term substitutes for teachers that are out long-term, on FMLA, etc.
Balanced-Hybrid
We have been working with the HDESD to get substitutes training on our systems. The substitutes that take our trainings will be identified in the HDESD system (AESOP) as being trained and will have preference over substitutes that are not trained. Once we go to hybrid, obviously we’ll need substitutes in the building.
Floor Decals info from Scott B…The district has placed an order for each school to receive 20 distancing floor decals (keep 6 feet apart). We want to make sure all the decals are standardized across the district.
As soon as they come in, we will get the decals out to all schools.
Answers to questions we still owe you:
- Will we have a standardized location at each school for the floor decals?
- Will we have more decals available through our supply chain at the distribution center if schools need more?
As soon as we have an answer to those questions, we will push that information out.
Thank you for all you’re doing to get our schools ready and safe for our staff and students 🙂
Dreambox Update and request from Kerry… With so many changes to schools this year, Kerry needs to know who needs building access to DreamBox data. They may include the following:
- Principals
- Assistant Principals
- Special Education Teachers
- School Psychologists
- Educational Assistants who will be monitoring DreamBox
- Title I teachers or Interventionists
Before adding them to this list please ask the person to check their current status by logging into DreamBox through Clever.com. Please enter this information as soon as possible.
iPad update – the latest news I have on iPads is that they should be arriving the beginning of next week. The goal is to unbox them, asset tag them, and case them as fast as possible and get them out to schools.
Attendance – please review attendance procedures with your staff again. Currently there are only two codes to be used by teachers – PV and NPV. Additionally, attendance needs to be done the day after AND teachers need to make sure they toggle to the pervious day. Thanks!
I’m not sure if you have read today’s Daily Digest that Paul has been sending out, well, daily. The information that he has included in today’s “digest” is pretty informative and is the first two pages of the document linked here. It is a heavy dose of information, so you may want to take it in bite-sized chunks.
This is good advice for students and for adults…
