Case Managers, Please Note:

When a student is concurrent (has a 504 with a SpEd Eval in the works) PLEASE leave the 504 Coordinator/counselor on the team as case manager.
They need to continue to update the student’s 504 plan while the SpEd evaluation is underway and until the IEP icon is on.
It’s only at that time that we’ll remove the student from the 504 process.

THANK YOU!!

Hi Learning Specialists and Inclusion EAs,

There is a wonderful opportunity for our Inclusion EAs to get extra professional development on October 19th! This is a non-contract day, but staff members who would like to take advantage of this awesome opportunity will be paid.

There are two options that will be offered for your learning this day:

  1. CPI – This will be an initial course for anyone who needs training about Non-Violent Crisis Prevention while working with students who are dysregulated. (This was sent out previously in an email from Krista Baker.)
    REGISTER IN PERFORMANCE MATTERS

  2. Educational Assistant Conference Day – This will be a conference-style training, where staff can go to courses on things such as trauma-informed approaches, instructional strategies to make the most of your small group time, inclusive practices, supports for English Language Learners, among many others.

Welcome back everyone –
and a BIG welcome to all of our new staff!! 🥳

I’m hopeful it will be a joyful,
almost stress free year for you all. 🙂

Greetings,

Quick heads up for those who may not have attended Safe and Secure Schools workshops in August…

The direct link to the First Step app that was previously featured on middle and high school iPads has been replaced with direct links to the apps our students use the most: Safe Oregon and YouthLine.

As a reminder, these two resources also continue to be featured on the back of all student IDs for those in grades six through 12.

First Step continues to be a resource for our families:

Nurse Spotlight

This has been a tough year.  In the midst of all of this, one of our district nurses has received recognition by her school as going above and beyond….

Let me introduce you to Cynthia Serra RN, who has been a nurse for 24 years and a Consulting School Nurse for Bend-La Pine schools since 2009. This year Cynthia was awarded an Excellence in Education Award by Ensworth Elementary and was recently selected as a finalist for the Bend-La Pine Schools Support Staff Person of the year award which is decided in the fall.

During our interview I asked Cynthia the following questions:

  1. How long you have worked in the district? Cynthia started with Bend-La Pine in 2009.
  2. What do you like most about being a school nurse? “I like connecting with students and providing stability for them.”
  3. What is one of your favorite Bend-La Pine work accomplishments? “Learning about Trauma Informed Care and using that knowledge when working with students.”
  4. You were recently awarded an Excellence in Education Award by Ensworth Elementary and were selected as a finalist for the Bend-La Pine Schools Support Staff Person of the year award. How does that make you feel? “It feels great, but I believe all staff deserve an award for working through this pandemic.”
  5. What do you like most about working at Ensworth? “ I enjoy having the ability to help support the parents of students, as they already have so much on their plates.”

Here is a comment from Cynthia’s supervisor:
“Cynthia is an inspiration to so many with her relentless, wholehearted support and dedication to her school community as well as to her Bend-La Pine Schools Nursing Team. Her commitment to the health and safety of students and staff is praiseworthy.  She is an invaluable member to our district, and we are thankful to have her by our side.” shared Tami Pike, Supervisor of Health Services, Bend-La Pine Schools.

We also wanted to share with you some of the reasons that the staff at Ensworth Elementary felt compelled to honor Cynthia with her Excellence in Education Award;

Cynthia is very knowledgeable and has been working incredibly hard over the last couple of years to ensure the safety of staff, students and even families. I love how approachable she is and how she treats everyone with such kindness.”

Cynthia has faced the many challenges and changing circumstances of the last few years with patience, understanding, wisdom, and grace. Cynthia always is willing to step in and support our teachers and staff any way she can. As staff members were faced with sickness and navigating this year, she always answered our call with a comforting, calm, and patient voice. I know families also appreciated having someone with so much grace and understanding answer their calls. I am thankful to have her walking by our side. Cynthia we couldn’t do it without you.”

Two additional nurses were recognized with Excellence in Education awards this year
Molly Blackburn RN by Silver Rail Elementary
Theresa Will RN by La Pine Elementary

Have you ever wondered about the age of acquisition of speech sounds?
Bend-La Pine SLPs have adopted the Iowa-Nebraska Articulation Norms as a tool for determining when a student requires speech services. Check it out

Signature Reminder!!

**If you are having a meeting in person, please remember to get signatures from the participants at the meeting.  RCC doesn’t need to send paperwork home if the parents attended the meeting.  We stand a much better chance of getting those signatures in person.

Remember to get all signatures on the Attendance sheet as well.

Reach out if you have any questions!
