Choice Options Lottery for Grades 1-12 and ACR Priority Window Closes TODAY, Friday, Jan 23

The Choice Options Lottery and Attendance Area Change Requests opened on January 5th.  The deadline is Friday, Jan 23 for ACR’s and 1st – 12th grade Choice Options Lottery.  The deadline is Friday, Mar 20 for Kindergarten Choice Options Lottery.  Visit this link for more information. The Youth Truth Survey is a district-wide survey that we ask students, families, and staff to complete so that we can better our schools. Our Bend LaPine District and schools use the information from the survey to plan for school improvement.

We have made it a mission to be creative and smart about how we administer the OR Statewide Tests. We are not going to make students sit for hours at a time testing; we are going to offer them fun snacks, breaks when needed, and all the support we can give. We would like to take this opportunity to turn this challenge into a fun and meaningful experience.

Starting January 1, 2026, all Oregon K-12 public schools, including those in Bend-La Pine, must fully implement a statewide policy (Executive Order 25-09) banning student cell phone use during the entire school day (“bell-to-bell”) to boost focus and mental health.

Jan 30: NO SCHOOL for Teacher Work Day/End of Semester. 

Feb 16: NO SCHOOL for the Presidents Day holiday. 

Mar 18-20: NO SCHOOL for District Conference Days (Westside will have had conferences already). 

Mar 23-27: NO SCHOOL for Spring Break.

Roundabout Books Book Fair @ WVMS, Feb 3-5

Village Council Meeting will be Feb 11

Due to conferences and the Book Fair, we will push our Village Council meeting to Feb 11th. 8:00am social time, 8:15 meeting starts. All are welcome!

NexTrex Recycling Challenge

Help us reach our goal of collecting 1,000 lbs of clean plastic bags and film in one year! Westside Village is participating in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge starting in February and we need your help! You can collect at home and bring to the school OR collect at home, weigh it, and take it to one of our participating drop-off retailer locations for recycling. Make sure to email Ms. Marcie your weights so that we can log it! [email protected]

Plastic bags and film packaging are important durable and lightweight protection for food and merchandise in transit. But these materials SHOULD NOT be recycled in most curbside carts or single stream programs. Thankfully, many grocers and retailers and some communities provide specific collection bins for bags and film to be recycled separately from other recyclables.

MLK Day of Service, Jan 19

There is NO SCHOOL on Monday, January 19th! Join us at WVMS from 9am to Noon as we work together to beautify our school grounds. Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with us by giving back to our community. Let’s come together in the spirit of service and make a difference!

SLOW DOWN, please!  Reminder that we have children crossing at dropoff, pickup, and even during school.  Please be mindful of your speed in and around our parking lot.

One Way!  Reminder that our drive is one way; enter from 13th and exit onto 12th.

Parking on Lexington– let’s be considerate of our lovely neighbors.  If possible, please do not park on the opposite side of Lexington, only the school side.  Some of our neighbors don’t have driveways to park in; the street is their parking.  They help keep our grounds and garden clean and tidy; let’s keep them happy!

Wow!  A big thanks to all that participated in the Red Robin fundraiser in December. You helped raise $781.62 for Friends of Westside Village!  Way to go!

Bus Routes Changing Jan 5

We are excited to let our families know that we have been working with the transportation department to get new routes for our students in the mornings.  These routes will be much more convenient; morning bus riders will arrive to school around 8:30am.  Morning care will no longer be necessary for bus riders and families will need to sign up if they need it.  The transportation department will be communicating the new routes with families in the coming weeks.

If your student does not currently ride the bus but think you might be interested with the new, later pickup times, you can register here!

Youth Truth Survey

We will be asking your child to participate in the YouthTruth Student Survey in January. The YouthTruth Student Survey is a nationally recognized survey used in hundreds of schools and districts across the country, surveying hundreds of thousands of students. The confidential survey asks students about their experiences in the school and with their teachers, including how engaged they are at school, the rigor of their coursework, and their preparedness for the future. Our school, other schools, and researchers may use such information for developing plans to help schools and teachers improve. For information about this survey, please visit https://youthtruth.org, or speak to a school administrator.

Although we want to hear from all students, participation in this survey is voluntary. Please be aware that under federal law, you have the right to review a copy of the questions asked of your child. If you would like to do so, you can view a copy of the survey at school. You can opt your student out by filling out this form.

Get ready for an exciting day as our school community comes together to host the Winter Bazaar! This event offers a unique opportunity for students to flex their entrepreneurial skills by setting up tables to showcase their projects, crafts, or items for sale. 

We still have room for Community Vendors that want to purchase a professional table! If you’re interested or know of someone interested in reserving a spot to share your products with our vibrant community, you can book a vendor table here. 

If you purchased a table or want to work a shift at the Bazaar, make sure you turn in your permission slip!

If you plan to have a table but haven’t paid yet, please do so here.

Even if you don’t have a table, come see what it’s all about!  It’s a great time. 

Mark your calendar for December 6, and come support our young entrepreneurs and community vendors. We can’t wait to see you there!

WVMS Giving Tree

Every holiday season the WVMS Community sets up a Giving Tree to help out and spread joy to our families that need some extra support and help during the holiday season. This year the WVMS Giving Tree is located in the office lobby at school. This is an awesome opportunity to show some WVMS families some love this holiday season. The Giving Tree has “holiday wishes” on the ornaments” to be filled.  The Giving Tree is updated frequently as we receive & fulfill holiday wishes.

To participate: simply pick an ornament with a wish from the Giving Tree, let office staff know which wish you would like (they are numbered), fulfill the wish, and return the unwrapped wish items to the office (with the wish ornament attached or wish number clearly marked on the item/s) no later than Wednesday, December 17th. If you are unable to come to school,  just give us a call and we will help you pick a wish.

Please know that the WVMS community is amazing! Our community members are “all about” helping out other community members! If you need some help during the holiday season, please accept this invitation. The Giving Tree is anonymous & gives folks great joy in knowing they can make the holidays a little lighter and more magical for other folks in our special community.

If you are interested in having your family be a recipient of our giving tree and have their wishes put on the tree – please email [email protected] or [email protected] or call the office at 541-355-2000 ASAP.

Join Us for Our Winter Bazaar on Dec 6!

We are excited to announce our Winter Bazaar and share some useful information with you all about the event and what to expect.

What is the Winter Bazaar?

The Winter Bazaar is a friendly gift market where both professional and student vendors can show off their creativity and sell their products. It’s a wonderful time to bring together our village and our greater community.

The theme for this year is: Sowing Seeds of Community. Our criteria is to create a product that is 50% made from earth’s materials and/or upcycled.

Student Roles

Students can create their own products independently or with a group, or they join a team at school and create products during school. It gives students a chance to create a business plan, experience baking, building, designing, and crafting. The criteria for being part of the Bazaar is that the products are made from at least 50% natural or upcycled materials. 

If students choose to create and sell their own product, it is expected that the project be created at home, outside of school hours. We will assist students in creating their plan, reaching out to the school community for materials, and providing feedback. It is by no means a requirement for students to sell their own product; however it is a great learning opportunity. The week before the Bazaar, they may spend time at school in the afternoons working on the product.

If they cannot make their own, we have multiple teams at school that they can join.

Professional Tables

We welcome professional artists, creators and community members to come sell their products at the Bazaar as well! Reach out to the front office if you are interested or know of someone interested in selling a product at the Bazaar.

Pricing and Additional Information:

• Students that are creating their own products can rent a table/space at the Bazaar for $15. Students need to fill out a permission slip for this and bring their money to the office.
• Professional (Adult) tables are $35.  Buy a table and sell your product for a profit! Call or email the office today to reserve your table.
• A percentage of the profits from table/space rentals will go to a nonprofit organization that the student leadership team will choose.
• We also need students at the Bazaar helping us out with running the Friends of WVMS booths. Students are signing up at school and need to commit to a shift.
• If your student cannot make it to the Bazaar, they will still participate in making items to be sold at the Friends of Westside Village Booths.  There is no need to rent a table unless your student(s) would like to sell their own items for a profit.
• Volunteers needed (both at school starting soon and day of the event)!  Google Form coming soon!
• Materials needed at school for student projects.  Materials List coming soon!

Please come check out the Lost and Found! We’ll have it outside at drop off and pick up. Any unclaimed items will be donated over Thanksgiving Break.

Join Us for Our Winter Bazaar on Dec 6!

We are excited to announce our Winter Bazaar and share some useful information with you all about the event and what to expect.

What is the Winter Bazaar?

The Winter Bazaar is a friendly gift market where both professional and student vendors can show off their creativity and sell their products. It’s a wonderful time to bring together our village and our greater community.

The theme for this year is: Sowing Seeds of Community. Our criteria is to create a product that is 50% made from earth’s materials and/or upcycled.

Student Roles

Students can create their own products independently or with a group, or they join a team at school and create products during school. It gives students a chance to create a business plan, experience baking, building, designing, and crafting. The criteria for being part of the Bazaar is that the products are made from at least 50% natural or upcycled materials. 

If students choose to create and sell their own product, it is expected that the project be created at home, outside of school hours. We will assist students in creating their plan, reaching out to the school community for materials, and providing feedback. It is by no means a requirement for students to sell their own product; however it is a great learning opportunity. The week before the Bazaar, they may spend time at school in the afternoons working on the product.

If they cannot make their own, we have multiple teams at school that they can join.

Professional Tables

We welcome professional artists, creators and community members to come sell their products at the Bazaar as well! Reach out to the front office if you are interested or know of someone interested in selling a product at the Bazaar.

Pricing and Additional Information:

• Students that are creating their own products can rent a table/space at the Bazaar for $15. Students need to fill out a permission slip for this and bring their money to the office.

• Professional (Adult) tables are $35.  Buy a table and sell your product for a profit! Call or email the office today to reserve your table.

• A percentage of the profits from table/space rentals will go to a nonprofit organization that the student leadership team will choose.

• We also need students at the Bazaar helping us out with running the Friends of WVMS booths. Students are signing up at school and need to commit to a shift.

• If your student cannot make it to the Bazaar, they will still participate in making items to be sold at the Friends of Westside Village Booths.  There is no need to rent a table unless your student(s) would like to sell their own items for a profit.

• Volunteers needed (both at school starting soon and day of the event)!  Google Form coming soon!

• Materials needed at school for student projects (list of items needed coming soon).

Westside Village encourages students to explore the multitude of pathways available to students after they graduate high school. This is a K-12 day! We want all students to be dreaming about what options they have after they leave our schools and striving to meet their infinite potential.

Family Thanksgiving Lunch, Nov 20

Thursday, November 20th we will be serving “Thanksgiving Dinner” at school at lunch time. Families are invited to join their students for lunch. Please bring your ID to sign in and arrive at 12:00 to allow time to sign in. Please RSVP so Ms. Jennae knows how much food to prepare. (If you purchase your ticket online, this will act as your RSVP). We will also pre-print name badges for those that RSVP. Price is $5.50 for adults and $3.50 for siblings. Exact cash and check accepted day-of (no cards), or you can prepay here. WVMS student meals will be free of charge, but any family attending will need to pay for their meal.

Picture Retake Day is Nov 13

If you missed picture day or would like a new image, retake day will be next Thursday, November 13th. If you already ordered and want a new picture taken, please be sure to return your original picture packet to the photographer on retake day. Thanks for a Great Celebration!

What a wonderful 1st Six Week Celebration! In case you missed it:

Whole School Geology Field Trip to Smith Rock, Oct 27

We will be taking our entire student body to Smith Rock for a geology study on Monday, October 27, 2025.  We will leave around 9:00am and return by 3:30pm.  Permission slips are due ASAP and it is available below.

Harvest Party & Fun Run, Oct 28

It is almost time for our harvest celebration which takes place during school (for the students) on Tuesday, October 28th. This is always a very fun time filled with crafts, sweet treats, academics related to harvest, and of course a Costume Fun Run on Tuesday. 

A few things to note about the harvest celebration:

– Students are welcome to dress in costumes but they need to be appropriate for all. Absolutely NO scary, gory or cultural appropriation.

– Please do not send small pieces as they inevitably get lost throughout the business of the day and we will not be here on the 31st to help find them!

– All students will participate in the fun run; please send your student with comfortable shoes.

Oct 29-Oct 31:

NO SCHOOL for District Conference Days. Westside Village will be closed for all Westside students, K-8, these three days. We do our conferences earlier in the school year, so there will be no conferences for Westside families these days.

It’s time to sign up for 2nd Session of Extended Care & Clubs! Visit www.friendsofwestside.com. If you need a scholarship, please fill out an application and get your paperwork to the front office asap. Once you are approved you will receive a code that is valid for the whole year.

WVMS Night (or Day!) at MOD Pizza

Join us for some pizza on October 29th and support Friends of Westside Village! We are having a MOD Pizza Fundraiser at the 110 NW Sisemore St location. 25% of ALL DAY sales will be donated back to Friends of Westside Village (you must show flyer or tell them you’re with Friends of Westside Village)! Tell your friends, family and neighbors to mark their calendars for pizza on Wednesday, October 29th!
