April 26 – 30

Important Information

Get to 70! As stated in our stand up meeting on Tuesday, students in yearlong courses will be able to retroactively earn their semester 1 NG credits by earning a 70% in their semester 2 courses. Please be aware of who these students are and support them in reaching 70% (especially periods 3 and 6). Scheduling in small group instruction for larger point items (while other students focus on enrichment activities) is a best practice.”

Save the Date! Proficiency Day (May 4th)

The 2020-2021 school year has been a difficult one for many, and while we are happy to have all students back at school, we acknowledge that some students may still be struggling to regain lost learning or credit recovery from Semester 1. At La Pine High School, we are committed to connecting with every student who received an NG in Semester 1 and offering opportunities for learning and credit recovery so that every student can be on track as we enter summer and a new school year.

La Pine High School will be holding a “Proficiency Day” on Tuesday May 4th. Our goal for this day is for students who struggled academically during CDL, need to regain credit, or who are currently not on track to graduate to have a day to connect with their teachers. This day will be an incredible opportunity for these students to have smaller class sizes, get individualized support, develop a plan, and connect with teachers they had during Semester 1.

Students will have the chance on this day to move thru their Semester 1 schedule (all class periods 1 – 7) where they may get more individualized lessons to highlight missed content, be given direct instruction, or have an opportunity to discuss assignments they need to complete for credit recovery. Our hope is that students who received an NG in Semester 1 will leave the day with proficiency in that subject area, which may translate to an earned credit, and allow the student to get back on track academically.

Students who received an NG in one or more classes, who are not on track to graduate, or who received an email about Credit Recovery are required to join us on this day. Students will be able to ride a bus or be dropped off and be provided lunch, like a normal school day. Students will go thru their Semester 1 schedule where teachers will give instruction, directions, or develop a plan to move the student to academic proficiency and credit recovery. As well, students will have quiet, working environments with access to technology and resources to complete these tasks.

Students who are on track to graduate and/or have not received a NG in Semester 1, are excused to stay home for the day. There will be no NEW content being taught on May 4th. If students who are on track choose to attend school on May 4th, they will be provided a space for general study hall.

Supervision

Here is the supervision schedule for this week. If you need to make any changes to your supervision assignment day/time, please see Kathy Russell.

** It’s important that we have supervision areas covered each day now that we have all our students back.

Announcements

Forestry Club – Future Natural Resource Leaders (FNRL) Club Meetings – Wednesday from 2:30-3:30pm starting 4/28. Room D171

MAC Survey – FINAL MAC survey day of this school year will be Tuesday, April 27. With many students being back in the building, we are hopeful that connections around MAC related services will be happening (medical, mental health, dental, vision, substance abuse services).

Some ideas that might generate claimable time:

Individual students

-Following up on a prior referral

-Gathering info in advance of a referral (this can be talking with a staff member, student, or parent)

-Having a discussion with a staff member about coordinating services

Connecting to Oregon Health Plan

-Talking with a family to make sure they have OHP/health insurance

-If they don’t have OHP, do they know where they can go to fill out an application or what they will need to apply?

-Compiling materials about how and where to apply for OHP and distributing them to the students/families (via email).

Across the district or whole school More for Administrators and Nurses

-Anything that you are doing with connecting the whole school or all grades, could also be claimable.

And finally, when talking about MAC, anything around mental health, dental, vision, medical, substance abuse services or connections to OHP can be claimable. Joanne will be sending out an email on MAC day with details on how to complete everything online, samples of wording to use when you have claimable time.

Reminders

Reserving Conference Room & Library – Now that we are back in full swing there have been more in-person meetings. Please plan ahead and reserve the conference room with Kathy, or our Library with Susie. This will help with planning and preparing. Thanks!

Hawk News

4 JROTC Units competed in Color Guard, Drill, Marksmanship and Physical fitness on Saturday at La Pine High School. Cadets from La Pine, Mountain View, Crook County and Redmond high schools were able to showcase the efforts they have been putting into the JROTC program core competition categories. The competition season typically runs from October through April however the entire season was cancelled for the Pacific Northwest region to comply with COVID protocols. La Pine High School dominated the culminating event – a functional fitness field meet – over second place Mountain View by a decisive 5-1 score. For Freshman and other first year cadets, this was a great opportunity to see what a regular season competition looks like and for Seniors the event was their final hoorah for their time in the program.

Mental Health / SEL

Our Student Support Team (SST) is working on how to help get Tier I regulation ideas into your classroom. They are envisioning a gallery walk (via a slideshow) where folks can see what others are doing. Please send (to Emily) what you’ve been implementing (pictures would be ideal!) so that we can eventually have a full slide deck of what works.

State-dependent Brain Functioning: Neurosequential Network Stress & Trauma Series  This 21-minute video discusses the shift in functional capability of the human brain with a shift in internal ‘state.’  This principle is relevant for anyone interested in human behavior including parents, educators, and clinicians.

Canvas

Canvas IS our Learning Management System: As a follow-up to Lora’s message about continued Canvas use, here is a support document that communicates key to-do’s regarding the Canvas LMS system.  It is important that teachers continue the 3 minimum requirements of posting weekly agendas, creating assignments, and providing feedback in Canvas.  It is also critical that teachers continue to regularly sync Canvas and Synergy.  Updated information in both Canvas and Synergy not only allows access for our students who are quarantined at home but also allows your counselors and staff to accurately track and monitor student progress, which is especially important as we support our seniors toward their post-secondary plans.
