9/27/19 Weekly Update

  • 10/2 SIW: The District SIW this Wednesday 10/2 is being turned back over to sites for our own professional development with the understanding we will complete an Equity & Excellence Prioritization Session as a staff on another Wednesday prior to November 13th.  We would most likely need to complete this on 10/16 in order to meet the deadline.

Will Hoover’s Film & Time Capsule

I shared this with a few, but not everyone, so this is just to bring everyone in on the same loop;

Will put over 100 hours into the film and unfortunately when Friday rolled around, he just was not comfortable that it was ready to go for the day of the 100-year celebration.  Given his profession and his standards, I can understand. He came on Saturday and added some more interviews and footage to use and he is continuing to work on it with the hopes that we might be able to release the video at another time this fall or winter.   Stay tuned for another date.

As for the time capsule, Gene came and took everything back so we will need to come up with a time to finalize and bury (maybe?) the capsule somewhere.  So there is still time to put things in the time capsule and the date for burial is to be determined.

Revisiting Meeting and SIW scheduling

Below is what I shared with you in June;

Survey Results;

  • It’s probably no surprise we did not have much support for before-school meetings.
  • EBISS meetings will move to afterschool 2:45-3:30 (likely on Tuesdays).
  • Staff, PLCs, & Design Team meetings will likely be the first half-hour of specified SIWs.  (SIWs are now 1:30-3:30 so we have a 2-hour block of time to use.) and after school on other days as needed (TBD by the individual teams)
  • Staff meetings will be roughly every other week.
  • Design Teams will meet once a month.
  • PLCs will be once a month.

I used the information above to build our meeting schedule and plan our SIWs.  Please take a look a the full meeting calendar in the master schedule document so you have better context.  Below is the graph I shared earlier regarding the start time for the non-staff-meeting SIW dates.

Forms response chart. Question title: Untitled Question. Number of responses: 12 responses.

Given all this information it would appear that we should go for the consistency and start at 1:30 in every case.

PTO

The next general meeting is Tuesday, October 8, 2:30-3:30 in the library right after school.

Dreambox – Marina and I will be providing training on Tuesday 10/15 for the 2/3 and ⅘, however either one of us will be willing to meet with you one on one get you up and running before then.

9/20/19 Weekly Update

SafeTOUCH Parent Information Night – Thursday 10/17 5:30 in the library

Once I have the parent night completed we can get started soon after with the lessons.  Below are some target dates to get these on the calendar – please talk with your team about which weeks work best for you and get back to me with the specific times for each of your classes.

  • 4/5 Classes – weeks of 11/4-11/8, 11/18-11/22 or 12/2-12/6
  • 2/3 Classes – weeks of 1/13-1/17, 1/21-1/24, or 2/3-2/7
  • 1st grade – 2/10-2/14, 2/24-2/28, 3/2-3/6
  • Kinder – 3/9-3/13, 3/16-3/20, 4/13-4/17

Minis, Evals, and SLGGs

It’s time for me to get moving on mini-observations, evaluations, and SLGGs.

Here’s a little recap of everything for everyone so we are on the same page;

Mini-observations: I will start moving from room to room on my classroom days starting next week.  I will do 2 to 3 classroom days a week. I typically take notes on my computer to help provide context for our conversation later.  Once I observe your class, I need to have a follow-up conversation with you regarding that lesson within 3 days in order for it to count as a mini.  I appreciate your help in making this happen at a time that works for both of us. Not every classroom visit will result in a mini and that’s OK. I plan to come to watch all content areas this year, so minis do not have to be limited to one content area.

Evaluations:  If you did not have an evaluation last year, then this is your “on” year for evaluation (see list below). If you think there is a mistake, let me know. Later in the year, I will prompt you to complete a self-reflection in TalentED.

SLGGs:

These will be similar to previous years.  Forms are due to me Friday 10/18 and are linked below;

Linked below is our typical SLGG form used over the past couple years;

  • *Brief Form: click Here  – *I am experimenting with a digital fillable form for this one if you would like to wait another week, I should have it ready to go – this should streamline and reduce the paper.
  • Write your own goals: click here
  • state guidelines document
  • quality review checklist.

TAG

List – Please check your individual class list against the master list for accuracy (this list contains students already identified and soon-to-be identified).  If you have a student with a test score of 97th percentile or above as one piece of evidence, we should be actively collecting the second piece (usually in the form of a teacher referral) of evidence to identify.

Forms:

If you ever have a parent request testing for TAG, please be sure to let me know immediately.  Just as a reminder, our district primarily uses the following assessments for TAG identification;

  • SBAC ELA & Math (All 3rd through 5th graders) – these test for academic talent
  • Naglieri (All 2nd graders & new students to BLP schools) – these test for intellectual ability – This test will be administered early spring.
  • SAT-10 (This is an additional test available upon request.  Format is similar to the SBAC test and requires a fair amount of time to administer.)

Basic TAG Message to parents (What we do for TAG identified students.)

“We differentiate to meet the rate and level of all students in the classroom using available curriculum resources, in addition to the open-ended environment of Storyline.”

Fall Culminations

Thanks so much for your cooperation with using the survey for the fall culminations.  We will be giving you a 2-week window to input your March Culminations. That 2-week window will run from Monday 10/28 to Monday 11/11.  Please try to have conversations with your teams about your preferred dates and also please provide an alternate date to allow for some flexibility.  Again, this is a proactive attempt to work out conflicts before they happen and improve our communication with families for everyone.

Meeting Schedule – now added to the Highland Staff calendar.  If changes are made, please help ensure the change is reflected in both the Master Schedule Document and Calendar to avoid confusion.

PTO

I realize I didn’t provide your balances yet, but I will get these to you next week.

Dreambox – Marina and I will be providing training on Tuesday 10/15 for the 2/3 and ⅘, however either one of us will be willing to meet with you one on one get you up and running before then.

100-Year Celebration- Saturday, September 21st

Linked below is the sign-up list and I added a sort of checklist of things to be done before start tomorrow.  I have a handful of people coming at 6 this evening to help with set up. Please prepare your room for public viewing.

Dyslexia- October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This is a good time for everyone to do a quick review of SB 1003 and the requirements around it.  Heidi Evans is our trained staff on site.  Please familiarize yourself with this process and be able to answer questions (see talking points) about our process to address this law, and more importantly, help students struggling to learn to read.

9/13/19 Weekly update

“I’m jealous of my childhood self now when I remember that every fall we got to start over, as if our lives were getting a routine software upgrade. I cleaned out my bookbag, tossed old notebooks, lined up fresh pencils, got my feet measured for new shoes, and showed up to school ready to learn. I bemoaned the end of summer, but I also loved the sense of the possibility of a new grade held.”

Mary Laura Philpott in “I’m So Excited for 40th Grade” in The New York Times

Collaborative Problem Solving; Please click the link below for a great opportunity to support Collaborative Problem-Solving in the classroom.  This will be most useful for those of you who have completed the Tier 1 training. CPS

Fall Culminations

We started adding these to the calendar today and we are working on the few conflicts today and Monday, so you will hear from Shawna soon to help resolve these.  Thank you very much for putting all this info into the survey – I am sure there will still be hiccups here and there, but we are much better prepared to facilitate things from the office with this system.  For the next round of culminations, I will impose a slightly stricter deadline to help with planning.

I would still like to encourage a common start time of 5:30 for all evening culminations unless there are strong arguments or objections otherwise.  If you think this is a problem, please email me, otherwise, we will start making the changes to the times for you.

Communication

  • Please remember to keep yourself informed and also encourage parents to take advantage of the information sources;
    • School Info – Weekly Newsletter
    • PTO – Website, Facebook and Newsletter
  • Remember communication is a two-way street.  We [office & PTO board members] are working really hard on the sending part and it’s on you to help work on the receiving part.

SIW start time – Please take moment to reply to the following survey regarding our start times on Wednesdays.  Survey

Meeting Schedule

Please also take some time to examine the Meeting Schedule on the Master Schedule document.  Please take note of the “Individual” SIW dates. These dates are truly meant for your individual prep and planning time.  If you will permit me to provide a little unsolicited advice I would highly suggest you schedule or structure those 2 and half hour blocks for yourself.  If you don’t provide your own structure you might find that you don’t get as much done even though you have these large blocks of time. I experienced this problem when I switched from singletons to block periods while teaching high school.  I am not doubting any of your time management skills, but if my mistakes can help you in any way, I’d love for you to benefit.

Staff Meeting Notes 2019-2020A big thank you to Shawna for taking notes during our staff meetings.  Click link to refresh your memory or read what was missed.

PTO

  • The first general meeting was well-attended.  Colleen and Caitlin Vallegra provided a nice history of storyline for our parents.
  • Our budget is approved and the giving campaign goal is now over 60% met.  (classroom supplies goal is about 68%). So we are well on our way to meeting that goal.
  • The next meeting is an afterschool meeting on Tuesday, 10/8 at 2:30.
  • Grant Request Form Linked here;  https://www.highlandpto.org/teacher-grant-request-form

Dreambox – Marina and I will be attending the training for this program next week and I hope to start sharing this more widely with everyone.  If you are already “playing around” with it – no problem. More to come…

100-Year Celebration- Saturday, September 21st

Last planning meeting Wednesday 9/18 – 3:00 in Library

Just to revisit my two requests (from our staff meeting) of you for this day;

  1. Please make a “memory” poster for each room.  Ideally, the “frame” of each will be decorated with messages, images, notes, etc. from your class.
  2. If you could please sign up for a time to be at the celebration to help be eyes & ears on our property and classrooms I would greatly appreciate it.  Sign up
  3. I also will need some greeters to help encourage people to make a name tag – maybe even sign a visitor book/log.

Dyslexia- October is Dyslexia Awareness Month. This is a good time for a quick review of SB 1003 and the requirements around it.  Heidi Evans is our trained staff on site.  Please familiarize yourself with this process and be able to answer questions (see talking points) about our process to address this law, and more importantly, help students struggling to learn to read.

Radios

We started rolling out the radios this week.  I am just sharing the following tips for your information.

Radio Tips –

  • Turn your radios off when charging them overnight. Once the radios are fully charged they should last at least one day with heavy use.
  • Ensure your charging cable is fully plugged in and the radios are charged overnight.
  • Ensure that radios are fully seated and aligned with the base charger and the light is on if your radio has a base charger and not a cord charger.
  • When you power the radio off, it should stay on the current channel. You should not have to cycle through to your schools channel each time you power the radio on and off.
  • When pushing the push-to-talk button to transmit on the radio, wait just a second until you hear the radio beep, then start your conversation.
  • Two-way radios are designed for short, concise conversations. The longer you hold down the push-to-talk button and have a conversation, the more static you will receive over the radio.

9/6/19 Weekly Update

“Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” – Mother Teresa

Great Start!

You are an amazing team.  Thank you for keeping things positive.  Thank you for being flexible. Thank you for giving yourself and the kids permission to enjoy each and every moment.

Kids Inc,

Here’s what I know about how things are working with Kids, Inc. this year.

  • Kids Inc will be using the following spaces each day; gym, room 14, cafeteria and playground.
  • Their enrollment is currently at 105.  (First day they had 40, the second day they had 70.)
  • All kids should first head to the gym to be signed in and drop their backpacks.
  • The sign-in/sign-out will be located in gym door.
  • Once signed in, most all kids will be outside while the weather is nice.
  • The cafeteria will be used for arts & crafts and snack space (no more food in the gym – yeah!).
  • Room 14 will be used more in the future (especially when we need to use the gym for events) as an enrichment space and/or homework space.
  • Kids. Inc staff is increased by two more people.

Culmination Planning

Please get your Fall Culmination info in ASAP.  The sooner we have this information the sooner we can be prepared. I am working with Walter to have everything really well-planned out for our culmination season(s) and the good news is we feel it will be much easier with our current plan.  Ideally, we should look to use a common start time of 5:30, with a setup time of 4:30. This will ensure we don’t disrupt their program and we should have adequate time to use our different spaces. https://forms.gle/foYjjT9dQ5Uig79S6

Here is who we have so far;

  • Misha
  • Marieka
  • Becky E
  • JJ
  • Michele

PTO Update

  • As of this week, we are already past 45% of the giving campaign goal!
  • The first general meeting is on Tuesday 9/10 at 8:00am.  Meetings are going to be in the Library.
  • Linked below is the proposed budget I spoke to you about at our staff meeting.
  • Proposed 2019-2020 Budget
  • I also have some good news regarding your Classroom/Storyline Funds.  We received a very generous direct donation from a parent in June. Normally I would direct these types of donations right to the PTO, but after some conversation and research, I decided to put this directly into our Student Body Funds. The one stipulation I have with this kind of donation is that money must go directly to students.  The best way I can think to do this is to distribute the bulk of this funding toward your accounts. This is a one-time boost to these funds.  Shawna and I will make your balances available to you next week.

Radios

We have new radios (walkie-talkies)!  I will share more details later, but these are much lighter and sleeker than the old ones.  They also have the capability to be used district-wide.

Potential Schedule Disruptions

Just a heads up (and asking for patience and forgiveness upfront…);

  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs Parent Lunch – Friday, 9/13
  • Picture Day & Dibels Day – Wednesday, 9/25
  • Vision Screening –  Friday,10/4
  • Bus Evacuations – Friday, 10/11

Dreambox

The message below is from Skip regarding a new program available to grades 2 through 5 on the iPad;

You may have noticed a new application when you log into Clever.  Dreambox is a new program that you will be able to use with your students this year. You will receive training on this program on or after September 17th, but some of you may be eager to start using it earlier. If you are one of those people here are some resources for you:

*** Initial Placement Level-Must be done BEFORE students access their account for the 1st time. Using effective data, determine if any students are still working more than 1.5 grade levels below their age assigned grade level. If so, adjust their content level starting point to meet them where they are performing. Here is avideo explaining that.

Happy Exploring!

Kerry, Skip, John, and Amy

Insurance- The following was shared from HR:

Open enrollment is upon us, and as of today we have 1,130 employees who have not yet elected their benefits for the 2019-2020 school year. Open enrollment ends September 15th, which will fall on a Sunday this year.  OEBB and Bend-La Pine will not be staffed over the final weekend to assist or answer questions. Please encourage your staff to complete enrollment at their earliest convenience so that any technical difficulties or questions can be addressed ahead of the enrollment deadline.

Highland Design Teams – please use this link to provide input on our Highland design teams for the upcoming year. I’ve added the names I already know for certain. Thank you!

Building Security

Please remember both buildings are armed each day.  If the gym is not being used, then assume the alarm is set.  If you are using the gym as a pass-through to or from the parking lot there’s a good chance you setting off the alarm.  This will be less likely once school is underway, but please just be aware.

Secure Vestibule Project

This project will be proceeding however the construction probably won’t start until after winter break.  (Let’s keep our fingers crossed that it can happen over the break.) It’s going to be a significant change that will require rebuilding our front desk altogether.  There will also be some changes to the door locks around the school to allow for office control.

Culmination Planning Survey

Please get your Fall Culmination info in ASAP.  The sooner we have this information the sooner we can be prepared.  I still have some unknowns with Kids, Inc in terms of numbers and space needs, but the more I know upfront the easier I can manage those conflicts.   I would like to encourage a common evening start time of 5:30. https://forms.gle/foYjjT9dQ5Uig79S6

Afterschool Supervision

Please go straight to the bus pickup first, then walk back to the back of the school.  Your role is to be there in case of an emergency and look for students who may have been forgotten.  Come inside and make the announcement at 2:45.

Recess Lining Up

After examining the “Transitions” sheet in the master schedule document, please talk to your team about what makes sense for lining up after recess.  I do believe most all the recesses will be easier compared to last year based on the timing.

Friday 9/13 Parent Lunch

Just a quick heads up; Nutrition Services is inviting parents to lunch on Friday 9/13.  This will be a challenge given our space and timing, but I am asking for patience, understanding, and flexibility upfront.  I am planning to set up some outdoor seating, hopefully with canopies so that should help.

Architects in Schools Program

For over 40 years, the Architecture Foundation of Oregon’s Architects in Schools (AiS) program has matched professional architects, engineers and other design and building professionals with 3rd – 5th grade teachers for a FREE six-week classroom residency. The program delivers arts programming, environmental understanding, awareness of cultural links to history, understanding responsibility to the natural environment, career awareness, communication skills and more – all through the principles and practices of architecture and design. Last year we served 5,400 students across Oregon.

The program is based on a curriculum guide that teachers and their partner design and building professional can incorporate into existing classroom curriculum. The AiS curriculum guide uses architecture and engineering concepts to teach math, science, social studies, language arts and other disciplines, includes sustainable design concepts and can incorporate the engineering and design standards. Landscape architecture and construction residencies can also be a focus of the program.

Participating teachers receive a free training that links the program to Common Core and New Generation Science Standards.

I am contacting you to let you know the application process is now open for 3rd – 5th grade teachers to participate this upcoming school year. Please forward the attached flyer and following information to any 3rd – 5th grade teachers who may be interested in applying!

Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions.

We hope to have many Deschutes County schools in the Architects in Schools Program this year!

8/23/19 Weekly Update

I want to start by thanking Lorin, Cami, Marina, and JJ for joining me on Tuesday at our leadership academy.  We spent the majority of the day with Mary Ehrenworth and my head is still spinning with all the information she shared.  As many of you already know, she is incredibly inspiring and I really enjoyed the opportunity to be a part of the energy she created yesterday.

I have a little homework for you! Don’t worry everything is fairly short and to-the-point and there is no due-date; just read these selections when you have a little time.  These are meant to be validating, inspiring and focussing. As we plunge into the school year, the day-to-day demands can often make it difficult to see our work from a higher perspective.  These reading pieces and short video are intended to serve as reminders for the greater work we are doing with our students. In my humble opinion, the words “highly effective” could be interchanged with “Storyline”, or even more specifically, “Highland” teachers.

The Core Beliefs of Highly Effective Teachers

In their book 10 Mindframes for Visible Learning,John Hattie and Klaus Zierer argue that what teachers believe about instruction drives what happens in their classrooms. Here are the “mindframes” Hattie and Zierer found in highly effective teachers:

–  I am an evaluator of my impact on student learning.

–  I see assessment as informing my impact and next steps.

–  I collaborate with my peers about my conceptions of progress and my impact.

–  I am a change agent and believe all students can improve.

–  I strive to provide my students with challenge and not merely have them “do their best.”

–  I give feedback and help students understand it, and I interpret and act on feedback given to me.

–  I engage as much in dialogue as monologue.

–  I explicitly inform students from the outset what success looks like.

–  I build relationships and trust so that learning can occur, where it is safe to make mistakes and learn from others.

–  I identify and build on my students’ prior experiences and initial learning levels.

10 Mindframes for Visible Learning by John Hattie and Klaus Zierer (Routledge, 2018); see Jenn David-Lang’s detailed summary of this book at www.themainidea.net

Growth Mindest Message
This article highlights research supporting the use of a growth mindset education in schools.  The key takeaway message is this; Research shows Growth Mindset works!  Keep it up! Growth Mindset

This piece provides some great insights to help us support all students in their work of becoming better students regardless of any challenges they may face.  It dispells some common assumptions and provides some great guidance for teachers. Key takeaway, we must continue to focus on the strengths of the child and positive inclusion instruction.  Dispelling Myths Around Learning Disabilities

Executive function remains one of the most reliable predictors of success in academics—and in life. Watch this brief video to see the research on what it is, and how to cultivate it. ✈️ pic.twitter.com/RX4qYsbZ8d

Finally, I want to continue to provide resources to support the use of feedback to promote student learning.  Click below for some brief tips on increasing the effectiveness of feedback in your classrooms. Effective Feedback

Back to School BBQ

Thank you to Misha and Shane for offering to host again this year.  Please be sure to reply to the evite so we can get an accurate headcount for food.  This event will be after our Ice Cream Social.

Safety Drills

By law, we must conduct monthly fire drill evacuations, with a few other safety drills throughout the year.  Shawna and I have already plugged in our drill dates into the calendar. The first 3 are on the Highland Staff Calendar so you can prepare your students ahead of time.  The remainder will be unannounced at various times of the day. For the unannounced drills, we do our best to avoid major disruptions to your classroom experiences by examining the events on the calendar, however, please understand we still must attempt to adhere to our scheduled drill times as possible.  Thanks for your understanding. Our leadership meetings will have a standing agenda item and task to examine safety practices as a school site.

2019-2020 Master Schedule

There were a few more fixes/tweaks made to these documents based on some feedback, so thanks for bringing that to my attention.  I am hoping to provide EA coverage, recess, etc. soon (sorry it’s taking a while but it’s a complex document). Keep your eyes peeled and thanks for your patience.

EA start up week schedules – If you have questions about your hours during the start up week, please get in touch with me to see how we can best plan your hours.  The 7:30 breakfast on Tuesday is optional for EAs. Ideally, I would like all staff to be there at 1:00 on Thursday for the staff meeting (part of that meeting will be an opportunity for Lorin and I to meet with EAs, while teachers have their “student-speed-dating” time.)  Your individual schedules for the year will be ready next week.

8/16/19 Weekly Update

“A day without laughter is a day wasted.” – Charlie Chaplin

SELCO’s SPARK! Creative Learning Grants

As a credit union founded by teachers, SELCO is excited about projects that inspire curiosity, bring students together, and spark something new. That’s why SELCO offers educator grants of up to $1,000 to help bring creative classroom ideas to life. Applications are open August 15–September 30. Visit selco.org/SPARK for details and to apply.

Class Lists

Our current plan is to complete the Synergy upload on Wednesday, August 21st. Once we input into Synergy you can access your class list in Synergy. I want to avoid printing any lists from our google doc and rely on the synergy lists to reduce chances of errors.

Classroom Set-Up

Please see the following info sheet for some tips on keeping yourself safe when setting up your classrooms.

Safe Hallways

Sorry to remind you of this, but the top of the lockers are not intended for storage – please move materials into cabinets or other storage options and keep these spaces clear.  We have a lot of materials that could easily fall on kids and I have not done a good job of reminding you to store items elsewhere. Also, workspaces (furniture) in the halls need to be temporary.  The halls became dangerously congested last year with the furniture – please do not wait for an accident to happen before you do something about these issues. Every piece of furniture in the hall and every item on top of the lockers adds unnecessary risk to our students.  I apologize for letting this slide over the past year, but in the interest of keeping our hallways safe, we need to reign this back in. Thanks for your understanding.

Suicide Prevention

Sean asked us to share the following information for; National Suicide Prevention Awareness Week Sept. 7 – 14th

New Staff:

Please join me in welcoming Alice Sandusky as our new nurse.  I know we will all miss Angelina and it is hard to see her go, but let’s join together and give Alice a warm Highland welcome.  Angelina’s was reassigned to REALM and North Star. As a new school, North Star will be very fortunate to have her.

Highland PTO:

You can help Highland PTO by providing these links to parents in your classroom communications:

INFO FOR TEACHERS TO PASS ALONG TO PARENTS:

 -Confidential Scholarship Fund Application: https://www.highlandpto.org/pto-scholarship-form

As a reminder, the scholarship funds can be used for anything Highland related (yearbooks, Highland apparel, boot camp, etc) and will be kept confidential.

Team:

While the Bend-area Jewish community is not large, we have a significant number of Jewish families in our school district. We were contacted last year by a local rabbi, asking us to avoid scheduling family events on their holiest of holidays. These are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For 2019, these are the dates these holidays fall:

  • Rosh Hashanah-sunset Sunday, 9/29-sundown Tuesday, 10/1
  • Yom Kippur-sunset Tuesday, 10/8-sundown Wednesday, 10/9

Please note that these dates do not mean school activities need to come to a standstill, but please avoid scheduling events such as open houses, curriculum nights, etc.

 Thanks!

Message from Shawna & Elizabeth:

  • SUB COVERAGE: Full day certified subs will work 7:15 – 3:15.  Half day certified subs will work 7:30 – 11:30 and 11:30 – 3:30.
  • AFTER SCHOOL BUS: Bus will leave at 2:38 sharp.  Buses cannot return to pick up missed students, due to the domino effect it will have on the middle school/high school routes.
  • FIELD TRIP BUS:  Field trip pick up/return must be between 9:00-2:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday.  There will be no buses for Wednesday field trips.
  • RADIOS:  We have new radios which must be charged nightly.
  • FIELD TRIP PERMISSION SLIPS:  We are required to keep permission slips on file three years.  New Field Trip Permission Slip Form https://portal.bend.k12.or.us/system/files/update_field_trip_activity_realease_of_liability_form_new_4.2019.pdf

Message from Transportation:

Hello All Bend-La Pine Staff

Welcome back to a new school year. We at the Transportation Department want to make planning your curricular trips as easy as possible. We ask that when you plan trips keep in mind that High School “Pay to Play” have first priority and then Middle School sports. Above all else, transporting students from home to school and back home is our #1 job and is our main priority. The best times for field trips are between school hours, 9:00 am to 2:00 pm every day except Wednesdays. For large out of area trips, we have drivers available on the weekends. Trip fees are; $1.70 per mile per bus and $29.00 per hour per driver (plus Per Diems if applicable). Trips need to be entered into “School Dude” at least 14 days in advance.

School Improvement Wednesdays can get complicated with the already tight schedules so please refrain from requesting buses on those days.

In addition, we will not commit to any trips during Graduation week. (June 4 – June 6th) We do not have enough drivers or buses to accommodate additional trips during this very busy time. We will not be accepting School dude bus requests for these days.

Between sports seasons, we are more available for curricular trips. We are more than happy to work with User Groups to check availability dates.

As a reminder, all Charters must all be booked through our transportation department by entering your trip into “School Dude” and selecting charter bus as transportation type.

Please call us if you have any questions or concerns regarding the best times to arrange your bus field trips.

Have a Great School Year

Thank you,

Christina Cathcart

2019-2020 Master Schedule

Please be sure to take a good look at this schedule to understand any changes from previous years.  When reading the schedule – each cell represents a 15-minute block. For example, a cell that is aligned with the time “12:00” represents 12:00-12:15.  The cell the aligns with 12:15 represents 12:15-12:30.

A couple of new sheets were added;

  • “Specialist Schedule” – allows you to see your music, PE and M&M days.  The library times will be added later.
  • “Cafeteria Schedule” – The specific times for each group are listed in a table and if you scroll right the table seating is displayed.  Both of these are subject to change as we work through the flow during the first weeks.
  • Coming Soon!!  “Transitions” – this has a bell schedule* as well as responsibilities for the transition responsibilities.
    • *Bell schedule – This sheet notes transitions with and without bells.  I’ve done my best to minimize bells. For example, there is no bell for the start of some recesses which allows you to determine when you want to release the students to head outside from your classroom.  If this bell schedule works out there will be no need to use whistles during the lunch recesses.
    • The table to the right on this sheet outlines who is responsible for which transition.  If everyone follows the transition responsibilities then we should be able to keep a better handle on the hallway behavior throughout the day.

2019-2020 Welcome Back

Welcome back!

I hope this letter finds you recharged and excited for another new year!  It’s amazing what a little time away can do for our mind and body. The Kissell family took another international trip to Costa Rica for a couple of weeks and it was a blast, but we were equally excited to return home and enjoy some Bend Summer.

Post-snorkeling shot at two beautiful little coves, north of Nosara.

Cheesy, touristy family shot at the Manual Antonio National Park.  Be sure to ask Amy about her encounter with some marine life here!

I may be smiling, but look closely and you can see absolute fear in my face!  This “fast-drop” experience was a “bonus” to our zip-lining package, but really it was just a fast way to get us down from the canopy level.

Before I go any further, I want to give a shout out to Brad and Tim for all their work on the building.  The classrooms and hallways are shaping up nicely thanks to their hard work. Thanks so much!

I’m excited to get the year rolling again.  The change of our hours is definitely forcing some changes to schedules, staffing and probably other areas we have not identified, but those changes are a nice way to refresh things and keep us on our toes.

Some Significant Changes to note;

School Hours/Bells

  • Office Opens 7:30am
  • Playground Opens 7:40am
  • First Bell 7:55am
  • Classes Begin 8:00am
  • School Ends 2:30pm (1:00 on Wednesday)
  • Office Closes 3:00pm

Cafeteria Lunch Schedule:

  • 11:05-11:30 All 2/3 Classes (coming from recess)
  • 11:15-11:40 All Kindergarten (coming from class)
  • 11:40-12:00 All 4/5 Grade (coming from recess)
  • 11:50-12:15 All 1st (coming from recess)

Music/PE and “M&M” Wednesdays;

  • All classes will be on a Mon/Thurs, Tues/Fri alternation between Music and PE.  Wednesdays will be combined groups in the gym for Music and Movement (M&M) co-taught by Rob and Scott.  (For example, as a student in Alicia’s class I might have PE on Mondays and Thursdays. Music on Tuesdays and Fridays.  On Wednesday, I would have M&M combined with Amber’s class.)
  • Kindergarten and 1st-grade classes will need to be organized into two groups each for specialist times.

2019-2020 Master Schedule

I know you are anxious to see the schedule so linked above is a the google-doc sheet with the large time blocks indicated.  This document will be updated frequently over the next couple of weeks to include all the other sheets with pertinent information.

Welcome to our Team

As you already know, Heidi Thomas will be joining our team this year while Ukiah is out on leave; but since this is her first Highland Weekly Update, I want you to join me in officially welcoming her to the team.  Heidi – we are excited to work with you this year!

EA Position

We have a posting up for an additional 3.75 hour EA position right now and we will be looking to do interviews on Friday afternoon, August 23rd.  If you are interested in volunteering your time to be on that interview committee, I’d appreciate your time and input. Please email me if you are interested.

Kinder Camp

Just an FYI – the Kinder team will be changing things up this year with their Kindergarten assessments.  On Thursday, August 22nd, the students are coming to campus in two groups; one group from 9:00-11:00 and the other from 1:00-3:00.  The time will be designed to allow us to gain observations on the students in groups and gather SEL data along with some basic academic data.  The intention is to provide more information upfront for placement. As with most new processes, we can expect some hiccups, but I want to commend the team for going with something new.  Shawna and I will also do our initial introduction and welcome with these parents for each session. We are hoping this will make an easier transition for both students and parents when we start the school year.

Tentative Schedule for Inservice Week (This might be modified in the next week or two if there are some district needs thrown into the mix.)

Monday 8/26

  • New Teacher Welcome and Orientation Day
  • Potential flex day for all other teachers

Tuesday 8/27

  • 7:30-8:00 Breakfast with PTO Board
  • 8:15-12:15 Art Workshop with Alma Cox
  • 1:00-4:00 District Welcome Back @ Bend High School

Wednesday 8/28

  • 8:00-12:00 Art Workshop
  • 4:00 Class placements are posted to Parent VUE*

Thursday 8/29

  • 9:00-10:00ish Staff Meeting (Speed Dating, Library sign up, Supervision sign up, Kitchen duty sign up – if necessary)

Friday 8/30

  • FLEX day – (Please see work calendar – linked below).

100-Year Celebration- Saturday, September 21st

Wow – this is coming up quickly!!!  After some consideration and input from the district, we are going to limit the celebration to Saturday only (no campus tours on Friday).  We are looking at the event taking place from 10:00 to 2:00pm. (10:00-11:00 for VIPs and 11:00-2:00 open to public) on Saturday. We will use a similar format from the 90th celebration with the tables and boards organized by decades in the gym.  Will Hoover is putting together a documentary that we’ll have looping in the music room (I am really excited to see it). We also plan to put together a time capsule. It was also suggested we have a table and board dedicated to memories of the old gym, which sounds great!  I am going to put out some requests to you for some help with some specific ideas, but so far things are coming together smoothly.

ICCLs

Cami, Marina and Lorin will be serving as our ICCLs for the next two years and leading our three design teams.  Please join me in thanking them for taking on the added responsibility for leading our school design process.

Construction Update

As you probably noticed, the contractors were working on the basement rooms again to hopefully put a stop to any further water leakage from those exterior walls.  We are reaching the end of our 1-year warranty period from the gym construction, so there will likely be a few small projects here and there as that deadline approaches, but so far nothing too large so we should be able to expect a fairly construction-free year.  There is still a chance our office may get a new look but no word on a timeline if that is going to happen.

Riverbend Church

Riverbend Church will be remodeling their site just down the road from us and they will be renting out space on campus on Sundays for the better part of the school year.   They will be in the gym, music room and rooms 13, 14, & 15. They will only be here on Sundays (with maybe a few exceptions) and the goal is to ensure there is no disruption to our weekday day-to-day operations.

Digital Conversion

We are adding apple TVs to room 17 and the Library.  We may be adding one to the gym as well.

Hannah has also been working hard to get HDMI ports and ethernet ports repaired and in good shape for each of your rooms.  Please be sure to let her know it’s appreciated if you get the opportunity.

The following is a message from Skip just FYI:

There were slight changes to the AUP permission form to include language about not modifying or altering the iPad case.  Doing so could void an insurance claim. As a reminder, AUP forms are signed by 3rd, 6th, 9th grade students as well as new students to our district and in-district transfers.

For insurance, the cost is still $30 but we have changed the deductible.  The first break is free but any additional breaks cost $50 each time. Language about not altering the case was also included on the insurance form along with a signature for parents to decline insurance.  You do not have to have parents sign this form. However, some schools wanted to have this option so we included it.

As always, insurance is optional.  If a student declines insurance that does not mean he or she cannot take the iPad home.  Insurance can be purchased online or at school.

Forms can be found here à  https://drive.google.com/open?id=117rw5atRRDkfyTaX8-pY3m1gIW4BCvvw

TAG

TAG Lists 2019-2020

This is a working document that serves as our “tracking sheet” for students either already identified with 2 pieces of evidence or students who should be identified soon (already have one piece and need a 2nd).  I am providing this earlier than usual and this will be updated later in September or October as soon as more information is released from the district.

Safe Schools Training

Just a friendly reminder to complete your online Safe Schools Training.

Visitor/Volunteer System

FYI – all parents attending a field trip must be able to obtain a Volunteer badge (background check must be completed).  This is a change to previous practice, so please be sure to communicate this frequently when talking about field trips to families.

Please continue to help us remind parents to bring their photo ID whenever they expect to go past the office – this just makes our sign-in process go much more effectively.

Calendar Link

Please make a habit of checking the google calendar each week to be informed of upcoming events.  If you notice something that needs to be updated please send a message to us in the office; Shawna, Elizabeth and/or me.

2018-2019 Final Update

“You cannot change the circumstances but you can change yourself. That is something you have charge of.” – Jim Rohn

Variety Show

Huge Kudos to Marieka for another fantastic Variety Show this year.  I had an opportunity to observe the rehearsal on Sunday afternoon and the work and coaching she put into every act to make the whole experience come together was inspirational.  Thank you so much!

Field Day

Kudos to Misha and everyone else for their contribution to a fun day in the sun and on the field.  Although I did not get to observe it, I hear the new water feature was quite the sight! Thank you very much for creating such an active day for our kids.  You know something is going well when kids come in saying “No!!!, I can’t believe it’s over!!”

ConnectEd rollout:

We plan to come out to each building again in the fall to get everyone set up and ready to go for reading instruction.

  1. Rollout date and time Thursday 9/5 2:30-3:30.
  2. All old content in ConnectEd will be wiped clean … old classes, any assessments created/edited will be gone. This is how we did it last year, but messaging this out will be a good reminder to teachers.
  3. If you need/want to get on ConnectEd over the summer (especially those changing grade levels who want to preview things), they can access it by using the  demo code:
    • go to https://my.mheducation.com/login
    • username: Rwonders2014
    • password: Readingelem2018

SBAC Results

I updated this spreadsheet with a few more students who were missing scores.  I still don’t have the science scores available. I also highlighted (in bright magenta) scaled scores that are above last years (17-18) 98th percentile cut-off to indicate students likely to be identified as TAG if they are not already identified. These are my own unofficial predictions, but I feel they are fairly accurate. I anticipate a few more students will be highlighted later when we have more official cut scores.

Spring 2019 SBAC Results

2019-2020 Master Schedule

Thanks to our leadership team we were able to develop a schedule that should serve us really well and meet some of our new requirements around PE minutes and nutrition services.  I will have more details for you in August, but some key changes/features include the following;

  • Kinder Tech Time will not be a part of the schedule any longer so we can meet the PE minute requirement for Kindergarten.
  • Kindergarten and 1st-grade classes will be combined into 2 groups of 33 for music and PE.
  • Kinder and 1st-grade teams now both have common prep time.
  • Music and PE sessions will be combined on Wednesdays to provide Music & Movement Classes.
  • All grade levels have the same lunch/recess now. 4/5s together, 2/3s together, 1 together and K together.

2019-2020 Meeting Schedule

Survey Results;

  • It’s probably no surprise we did not have much support for before-school meetings.
  • EBISS meetings will move to afterschool 2:45-3:30 (likely on Tuesdays).
  • Staff, PLCs, & Design Team meetings will likely be the first half hour of specified SIWs.  (SIWs are now 1:30-3:30 so we have a 2-hour block of time to use.) and after school on other days as needed (TBD by the individual teams)
  • Staff meetings will be roughly every other week.
  • Design Teams will meet once a month.
  • PLCs will be once a month.

We’ll use this information in August to plan out our meeting schedule and SIWs for the year.  This will be added to the google calendar as things solidify.

100-Year Celebration

Things seem to be on track for this celebration.  Just to recap some of the major items in the works;

  • Friday, September 20th, 12:00-4:00ish Highland’s contribution to Kenwood.
    • Tours of the school to see Storyline in action and share our Friezes.
    • Possibly student-led tours?
  • Saturday, September 21st, time frame TBD, Kenwood Reunion.
    • a film by Will Hoover
    • Keynote speaker(s)
    • Decade displays (need to work on most current decade board)
    • Music list from all the decades
    • Time capsule
    • Food trucks
    • Building tours/open house
    • “flashback “ boards by each room

If you would like to contribute ideas or tasks please, please please feel free to jump in.

Slowdown

This TED talk is especially good to watch to start off the summer, but it will be equally relevant to start our school year.  There are really good points for us to take away as professionals and family members, but there great points to be made about how we set up the learning environment for children.  Growth is a positive and inevitable thing for our students, but the speed at which we push for growth, especially in the social-emotional area can be damaging. The good news is this social mindset can be changed.

6/10-6/14 Weekly Update

“There is virtue in work and there is virtue in rest. Use both and overlook neither.”

Alan Cohen

Kudos to Culminations

Almost there!  Congrats to all of you and your students for another successful round of culminations.  There was no shortage of hard work and thought put into these activities! Thank you so much for all your hard work.  I know we have a few more classes to go, but there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Last Assembly

Thank you, everyone, for the team-effort on that assembly this morning.  That was a lot to cover and I really don’t think we could have moved any faster and keep it fun for the kids.  I know it got chatty during the transitions, but that is to be expected after sitting on the floor for so long, especially with the exciting things being presented.

Placements

Thank you for all the work on the placements for next year.  Please remember to keep it confidential just in case we have to do any movement prior to the start of the year.

Field Day & Variety Day

Looking forward to a fun Field Day and Variety Show next week – thank you for your advance preparation!

Amity Team Visit

FYI – A small team from Amity will be visiting the campus next Thursday after school to take a look at our remodel.   I’ve already given Andy Slavin a tour of the campus and rooms to show what was done, so he will take them around to see what he wants them to see.

PE Outside

FYI – Scott will be outside for PE on the following dates;

  • Tuesday 6/11 after 1:15

Teacher iPads

If you have not already done so please turn in your iPads to Hannah by Friday 6/14.   I don’t have any information about replacements (who, when, what, etc) yet, but I will be sure to share as soon as I know.

Library and iPad Roll In

iPad roll in June 11th all day.

Reminder to teachers before roll in

  1. Have student CLEAN the iPad
  2. 5th graders need to clean brick and cord, get their names off
  3. Verify iOS is 12.2 or higher
  4. Make sure iPad is charged
  5. Erase all content and settings.
  6. Make sure students have brick, cord and iPad on roll in day.
  7. Be sure student has signed out of iCloud account and backed up info they want to save

SIWs

  • No SIW on Wednesday / SIW schedule on Friday 6/14

Great news – Next year we are reducing the district SIWs from 6 to 4.  Gaining control of our time back is always a positive thing!

Upcoming Field Trips –

4/5 Students to Sharc on Monday.

Howard – Field trip, St CharlesTuesday, June 119:15am – 12:00pm
