All School BBQ

Thank you to Nutrition Services, especially Meg and Karen for a great BBQ this year!  That was a super smooth event!

Kudos to Rob and the choir for a great inaugural concert on Wednesday.  With only 12 or 13 practices they sounded great.

Message from Julie Walker re: EBISS

Dear Highland Staff,

As part of the RTI process, it is important to get your input on the current status of implementation at our school. The Oregon RTIi Staff Implementation Survey (ORSIS) will provide valuable data that will be used to improve education for all students in our district. Please go to (http://www.orrti.net/orsis_responses/add0)and complete this short, 5-10 minute survey. Please complete your survey by Friday 6/7. The data will then be analyzed and shared with you via this weekly update as it’s available.

Thank you in advance for completing the survey.

Sincerely,

Julie Walker

5/27-5/31 Weekly Update

2019-2020 Master Schedule

Houston we have a problem…or opportunity.

As mentioned in an earlier post, our leadership team decided to move forward into next year using our current schedule, moved forward by an hour, with only a few minor tweaks.  Unfortunately (or fortunately if we choose to view this an opportunity), a couple of monkey wrenches were thrown into this plan after that decision;

  1. We are required to provide at least 75 minutes of PE with a certified PE teacher each week.
  2. Nutrition services is asking for lunch to be served no earlier than 11:15.

Our current schedule won’t meet either of these requirements so we will need to revise it.  It’s not going to be possible to pull a team together to rebuild the schedule before we leave for summer but I have some thoughts/plans for how to handle this which I will share with leadership next week.  There’s a good chance I will put out a survey to gather some specific information to use, so watch for that survey in a separate email.

All School BBQ

It looks like we have no rain on the radar for Wednesday, so I am looking forward to a fun and dry BBQ.  Don’t forget your lunch is already covered by PTO. Please take a moment to know your selected time and encourage everyone to be patient.  There will be lines, but we will move things as quickly as we can. It will also be important to let kids know their recess won’t look the same as a typical day, so their space for playing games will be limited and we expect them to be careful of everyone picnicking on the field.

End Of Year Meetings

For those of you in your evaluation year, please remember to complete and submit your self-reflection by May 24th.  To access your self-reflection in TalentEd, go to the portal and look at the bottom of the list of Quick Links.  SLGGs are required for everyone, so even if you are not in an evaluation year, please be sure to sign up for an EOY meeting to review SLGGs.  To be prepared for that meeting please have your fall data and spring data to review. 5/20-5/28 Weekly Update

“Teaching students to meditate will help manage their anger or frustration, but it won’t remove a system that mass incarcerates their neighbors and family members. Giving students skills in socioemotional learning can help students better process and express their opinions, but it won’t erase a system that was built not only to their disadvantage but also sometimes actively set up to see them fail. Yoga can help a child feel present in their body, but it won’t change the fact that our society places different values on different bodies.”

5/13-5/17 Weekly Update

“It’s not uncommon for students to graduate from high school believing that every math problem can be solved in 30 seconds or less. And if they don’t know the answer, they’re just not a math person. This is a failure of education.”

Dan Finkel, quoted in “Why Normalizing Struggle Can Create a Better Math

Experience for Kids” by Ki Sung in MindShift, May 1, 2019, https://bit.ly/2LlQ7h4

SBAC 2019

Great first week of testing (and rehearsals, and science station, and marching for students, and teacher appreciation week, and field trips, and…you get the picture!!)  Thank you for your thought, time, flexibility and energy making it happen. For the rest of the school; please continue to minimize noise in the hallways, especially during the morning for another week as we move into the math testing.

Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM)

On Monday, May 20th we will be administering the Child and Youth Resilience Survey with support from Better Together. This survey is part of the regional Culture of Care Initiative that the Bend-La Pine School District is participating. The survey asks about positive things in the lives of our students and is an opportunity to learn more about how we can foster the best environment for kids to learn and thrive. The survey will take approximately 30 minutes per classroom. I appreciate your support in helping us complete this.

The survey administration varies by grade level. You can access the Child Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM) Guide here; there is a page per survey version: Kindergarten, 1st-2nd Grade, 3rd-4th Grade, 5th Grade, 6-8th Grade, and 9th-12 Grade.

This is a summary of how survey administration will occur for elementary school classrooms:

Kindergarten:

A team of 4-5 data collection volunteers will come to your classroom as scheduled. Please instruct the volunteers to conduct interviews in the classroom or in the hallway. Volunteers will then pull students one by one to complete the survey. Please let students know that someone will be asking them questions about the good things happening in their lives. Volunteers will attempt to cause the least amount of disruption possible.

1st-grade classrooms will complete a paper survey.

At your scheduled survey time, a small team of data collection volunteers will come to your classroom with the survey materials. You may administer the survey as a whole class or in small groups. Volunteers can sit with students who need extra help, or with a small group of students. The volunteers will look to you to lead the administration of the survey for your classroom, they are there available to provide extra assistance as needed.

2nd-5th-grade classrooms will complete a digital survey.

Please set aside 30 minutes during the school day for students to complete the survey. Students will use their iPads to select a QR code to access the survey. Please post or project the QR code for students to access when you are ready to administer the survey. Please read the questions aloud to the group. If students have questions, please help

5/6-5/10 Weekly Update

“Know well what leads you forward and what holds you back, and choose the path that leads you to wisdom.”Buddha

Out Tomorrow (or today when you read this)

I will be heading to Jesuit High School tomorrow morning.  Mason qualified for the Twilight Relays which apparently is a really big deal in the high school track world.  He will be running in the 3000-meter race against 70ish of the fastest runners in high school.  He is looking to shave around 10-15 seconds off his PR and running in this field gives him a great opportunity to go sub 9:30 (a pace that really makes me hurt just to think about!).  Anyway, it’s a big deal for me to support him and I appreciate your support in letting me go cheer my head off for 8 laps.

PE/Music Transitions

Our leadership team discussed some concerns about the transitions to and from PE/Music and we decided we need to ask everyone to pitch in and help with this situation.  Rob and Scott are doing their best to line up the outgoing classes before they leave, however, the moment they are outside they tend to take off running in multiple directions.  They cannot follow every class out as they usually have classes coming in right away and their 30 minutes of class time is already ticking down. If we could get a little help managing the timing, the direction and pace of both the incoming classes and the outgoing classes then things would feel less chaotic during these exchanges.

Some key points to work on;

  • Please try to meet your class at the landing between the buildings.
  • Remind students to always walk in the spaces between the buildings.
  • Share the pathway (stairs, ramp) for both directions.  Typically we try to have the outgoing classes go down the ramp and the incoming classes go up the stairs.
  • Arrive and leave as a whole group.

If for some reason, meeting your class at the exchange time is problematic, please let me know so we can work on a solution.

SBAC 2019

  • Message to all school – please keep hallway work and traffic to a minimum, especially during the morning when the bulk of the testing is occurring.  We don’t need silence, just a nice work atmosphere of low background noise.
  • Earbuds or Earphones – we have extras in room 14 if needed.  Please encourage students to use their own if at all possible.
  • Air Secure – app needed on the iPad to run the test.
  • Keyboards – please use 2nd grade keyboards to replace any needed keyboards for those students testing.
  • Please see Marina’s email regarding iPad stuff just to be aware.  I expect these issues may cause some bumps in the road as we get started.  I will do my best to roam and resolve issues with you.
  • Accommodations are entered into TIDE.
  • Opt-Outs are blocked and entered into district tracking sheet.  (We will share our own google sheet with you as well).
  • If there is something else you need from me – please let me know.
  • This test cannot hurt anyone!  Our best effort is always good enough regardless of the outcomes.

We need more people to update their First Aid/CPR coursework to make our site compliant with the ratio of certified staff to students.  We have not been able to find a time to schedule our own training on site, however below are a number of options (including a couple that Angelina is teaching).  If your card has expired please try to attend one of these training options to get it updated.

We have scheduled six additional first aid/CPR classes for the remainder of the 2018-19 school year.  They will be held in the Boardroom at the Education Center. These certifications are good for two years.   ODE policy is each school have 1 first-aid trained staff member for each 60 kids. We have to have at least 8 attendees for each class to be given.

Managing Attention Versus Time

The following summary provides some really good insight.  You might find this helpful for both your own productivity and providing support for students as they develop their skills to be more efficient with their studies.  It also should provide some valuable information for why students may struggle to be consistent with their school’s work as their body clocks don’t really match up with our work day.  Fortunately for them, the school workday is not the only structure for work days (and weeks) and they can expect to find a variety of work opportunities that can match their strengths.

Time vs Attention

This is a great summary of the importance of discussing race with students at early ages.  As we plan lessons and Storylines, this research serves as a good reminder to provide opportunities to explore racial issues rather than avoid them.

4/29-5/3 Weekly Update

“Attitude is a choice. Think positive thoughts daily. Believe in yourself.” –  Pat Summitt

Yom HaShoah

FYI – Thursday, May 2nd is considered an international Holocaust Memorial Day, known as Yom HaShoah, in remembrance of the 6 million Jewish lives lost to the Nazi movement in Europe.  In Israel, the day is observed with somberness and reflectiveness. There are not celebratory events, and entertainment comes to a standstill for the day. At sundown, on the previous evening and at 11:00 am a siren sounds across every city in the country and everything stops.  Traffic on the freeways comes to a stop and everyone stands in silence throughout the full 2 minutes. What many people don’t know was this day was not well-received when it was introduced in the 50’s. Some Israelis felt it was wrong to dedicate a day to remember people who were led to their slaughter like sheep.  From that point on the day was dedicated to remembering both the lives lost and the lives saved by the resistance of those who fought back both, passively and actively.

ICCLs 2019-2021

I have been given a deadline for hiring our ICCLs of May 31st, 2019.  The job description for this position has not been updated in a long while, so I would advise you not to get caught up on the details of the description.  Your job as an ICCL is to work with your colleagues to move our school forward in the School Design Process. We have three main areas (academic excellence, thriving citizen, and future ready) but we choose our more specific goals, work and measures within those areas.   A date to keep in mind for this obligation is Wednesday, August 14th which is our district leadership academy. If you are giving this any thought, please talk to me.

TAG Update

Letters went out to parents of 2nd graders to indicate above/below the 97th %ile on the Naglieri.

Please take a look at the TAG list and check your list to see that I have it updated accurately.  We only have a few students still waiting on the 2nd piece of evidence and it would be good to get these updated with a second piece (teacher referral) prior to us recieivng SBAC results if possible.  Linked below is one of the teacher referrals. If you like a different variation there are more on the portal or ask me to find one for you and I will be happy to get it.

As we gain tools and strategies to allow us to personalize and challenge every student appropriately, the TAG process and label seems irrelevant (which is a good thing), however students with a TAG label graduate at a 97% rate which is siginificantly higher than the overall graduation rate for BLP students.  Labels don’t always help students, however this is a statistic that strongly suggest otherwise for this particular label.

Linked below is a great (quick read) teacher-written article to remind us of the importance of using kindness in our hearts as we deal with students failing to meet some of our “easy” everyday expectations.  Be kind to yourself and be kind to them; there’s no good reason to try and blame either party.

4/8-4/12 Weekly Update

“Be an encourager, the world has enough critics already.”

Laugh Lots!!

Our world is full of things that can easily drag us down and make us feel grouchy, surly and upset.  I am not going to tell you to try to pretend they don’t exist, however, I would like to take an opportunity to remind you to find laughter and find it often.  Laughter won’t make those situations disappear, but it will improve your ability to cope with them. This week I was reminded of the importance of laughter on a few occasions at home and work, so I thought I would share this article with you in hopes of sharing the benefits.

Laughter is the Best Medicine

Screen Time

On Thursday, May 16th Dr. Hicks will be providing a presentation in the evening as one of our PTO parent speaker series.  On that day, Dr. Hicks has offered to come to talk to our students (2/3s and the 4/5s). She did this at Lava Ridge, High Lakes and Miller and the student-presentation was really well-received.  I am hoping you will also be interested so I will circle back with each group to work on logistics.

Culture of Care Project

Earlier this year Bend-La Pine School District, in partnership with Better Together, received a $1.5 million grant from the Central Oregon Health Council to develop and strengthen trauma-informed cultures across education systems in Central Oregon. This effort aims to create a Culture of Care in schools that recognizes and responds to how Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), trauma, and adversity impact our students, classrooms, and schools. During the three-year grant period, we will implement trauma-informed professional learning with staff, work with a team of coaches on practices to address trauma and build resilience, and focus on policies that help students feel connected and supported in schools. More information about this project was reported by KTVZ.

More information about what this means for us in the future will come soon, but one of the more immediate needs will be conducting a baseline measure of resilience with our students.  I will share more on Tuesday morning. There will be a parent-letter going out in our newsletter this week to inform parents so please take a quick look at that when you get a moment.

Our survey day will be Wednesday, May 22nd.

4/1 – 4/5 Weekly Update

Snow Days-  HR has asked this to be communicated. Please call HR if you have any questions about this.

  • School closure days due to snow:   February 25, 26, 27, and 28
  • Leaves for Certified:  Sick days, Personal Day, and FMLA.
    • All leaves that were taken during the snow days will be returned since the days have been rescheduled.  Leave sheets that have already been sent to payroll will be modified by the payroll staff.
    • FMLA- employees currently on FMLA will have an opportunity to extend the leave up to four days.  HR has already contacted all employees that are currently on FMLA. If the employee wants to extend, then a substitute might be needed.  HR has communicated this with office managers.
  • This will hopefully answer questions for certified staff.  Certified staff with questions are welcome to contact HR.
  • These rules will not necessarily apply to classified.  All classified staff with leave questions need to contact HR.

Job Fair

FYI –  There is a chance I will be off campus for the afternoon on Thursday 4/4 for our job fair.   I am hoping I might be able to get out of it, but just in case, I wanted to give a heads up.

EBISS Day

Our next EBISS day is Friday 4/5.  The feedback from our 1/25/19 day schedule seemed to indicate fewer problems compared to our Fall date.  It’s linked below for you to take another look. If there are not large problems with this schedule then we can use it again.  If there are some large problems that I am not aware of, please let me know and I can draft a new one.
