Veteran RHS English teacher and one of our founding RHS team members, Michelle Hanford, is retiring! Her last day was the Friday before Spring Break. Michelle has had an incredible 29 year career in Bend LaPine Schools and we were fortunate to have her join us to help launch RHS over the last 6 years! Please join me in thanking Michelle for her huge contribution to our school and wishing her well in retirement!

RMS Art teacher Bethany Skau and her husband John have welcomed a new family member! Serena Jean arrived on Saturday March 23rd. Everyone is healthy and we are thrilled for their growing family. We look forward to having Ms Skau re-join us in the Fall, but at the moment are simply excited for the new family to have as much time as they can have to get acquainted!!

Please welcome Ms. Sarah who has taken over for Ms Skau and will be with us for another two weeks after Spring Break. We are currently hiring a ling term sub to replace Sarah as she took a short term position with us before her “other new job” starts up!

We are also happy to introduce you to Mary Dailey, who will fill Michelle Hanford’s position through the end of the year. Mary has been a teacher for 9 years at Lake Oswego HS as well as a District Specialist in California. Mary will be teaching Lit & Comp 4, coaching Seniors on their Senior Projects and collaborating with Allie Chiavetta and Greg Norris on some Senior Crew classes. Mary will be reachable at [email protected]

guest passes due by Tues April 9th

A full trimester of participation in a club will cost $60 for approximately 10 club meetings. We will ask families to pay one trimester at a time, and that payment be made within the first two weeks of the club meeting dates. Payment Due Date: April 15, 2024. Please use TouchBase to pay for your student’s spot in an after school program. **NOTE: All clubs will end Memorial Day week to make space for all of the special happenings at the end of the school year. LEADERSHIP WILL ACTUALLY END BEFORE TRAVEL STUDY (both facilitators gone) – LAST DAY MAY 16TH

If families cannot pay the full fee, Realms can offer financial support to help offset costs – Scholarship Form

CLUB INFORMATION: All clubs except Rubbish Renewed will run from 3:45-4:45 – please make arrangements to pick your child up on time at 4:45, as instructors will have to stay until all students are gone, and we will have our own obligations in the evening. Rubbish Renewed will run for fewer weeks, but will last 1.5 hours (ending at 5:15), due to materials management time needs.

Dungeons and Dragons: Mondays hosted by Joe Schulte (our music elective teacher); Dungeon Masters are Tristan an 8th grader at Realms. Open to all grades of Realms Middle School students.

Dungeons and Dragons is an in-person role-playing game (no screens, yay!) in which players create characters that they then “play” as they navigate a world full of adventure created by the Dungeon Master. In so doing, they must use their imagination, solve riddles, navigate traps, win battles, negotiate with non-player characters, route-find, discover clues, and complete missions. This game requires and builds: creativity and problem solving, teamwork, organization, planning, and compromise/collaboration. Note that some of the situations result in battles/fights that include gore while they test characters (and therefore the players) to use their specific skills balanced with chance (dice rolls) to determine outcomes. Few supplies are needed, and the first sessions will be focused on character creation, so this game is accessible to everyone!

MS & HS Rubbish Renewed Garment Design: Mondays, hosted by Kat Tomsic and Martha Campbell (current and past RMS Student Success Coordinators). Open to all grades of Realms Middle School and High School students **RUNS FROM 3:45-5:15 UNTIL MAY 13** RUBBISH RENEWED ECO-FASHION SHOW IS MAY 11.

Rubbish Renewed is a long-standing Realms fundraiser in which participants turn discarded, thrown-out, or recyclable materials into amazing outfits to be modeled on a runway at our Eco-Fashion Show in early May. Professionals, community members, students, and other locals all can participate in the fashion show without participating in this after school club, but students who do sign up get a space to store materials, advice, tools, and most importantly a creative work space, and support in the design and creation of their garments from some experienced adults and past student participants!

MS & HS Chess Club: Tuesdays hosted by Dante Biancucci. Open to all grades of Realms Middle School and High School students. Location: Rm (20)

For over 1,500 years, people have been enjoying the game of Chess! Whether you are an expert or have never played before, this club will be a great time and place for you to learn and have fun with other Realms students. Bring your growth mindset and playful spirit and Dante will do the same… And also provide chess sets and time-tested strategies and tactics to use in the black and white jungle.

Middle School Leadership: Thursdays, hosted by Caleb Campbell and Eric Beck. 3rd Trimester is open to 6th and 7th and 8th graders

Leadership is a club for students who want to take action to improve our school, plan and facilitate school wide action and fun, and learn and practice leadership skills. Students who join the leadership club will spend some of their time learning about different leadership styles, practicing leadership skills, and grappling with challenges that will push their ability to work as a team. Leadership also plans and puts on fun activities for our students like our school dances, spirit weeks, lunchtime fun and more! The students in leadership get to have a big voice in choosing what the group works on, so bring your ideas. Interested students must apply with THIS application to demonstrate their interest! This trimester we are welcoming 6th graders!!! DUE TO BOTH LEADERSHIP FACILITATORS BEING ON TRAVEL STUDY, THE LAST DAY FOR LEADERSHIP WILL BE MAY 16TH

  • standardized tests are expected as a part of college, careers and life, practicing NOW will help build the skill for later!
  • the results are SUPER HELPFUL for Realms as we determine the efficacy of our curriculum and instruction!
  • the individual results do NOT negatively impact students but DO provide us very helpful information

Substance Use and Technology Use

Raising children and teens has become more challenging in recent years.  Many families have asked for support for how to navigate their student’s technology use, substance use, or mental health concerns. One resource parents and other caregivers can use are these monthly educational webinars and virtual support groups offered by bryt. These events are free and are open to all families or other caregivers supporting students in Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Below are the upcoming events for April and May.  In the weeks that follow each event, there’s also a virtual support group for each grade level group: one for elementary, one for middle, and one for high.

  • Apr 2 @4-5 pm – Presentation: Parenting A Child Who is Using Recreational Substances.  Join HERE.
  • May 7 @4-5 pm – Parenting in the Age of Technology: Raising Humans in a Digital World.  Join HERE.

The bryt program is a national program K-12 schools can use to support their students and families.  Bend-La Pine Schools has a similar program based on bryt, called Student Success.
