Student Led Conferences at REALMS are a critical component “student engaged assessment” at REALMS. We believe the most important assessment that happens in our classrooms is the assessment that each student engages in when she judges her writing, her speaking, her art or any other of her accomplishments against rigorous standards of quality! Our goal and expectation is 100% participation and we are hopeful that the Webex virtual format will allow for increased participation.

STUDENT LED CONFERENCES ARE FACILITATED BY THE STUDENT’S CREW TEACHER AND ARE VIRTUAL (WEBEX) AGAIN THIS TIME AROUND.

PARENT’S: FIND YOUR STUDENT’S CREW TEACHER ON THIS SIGN UP TOOL AND GET YOUR SLOT ASAP!

During SLC’s, it is students who do most of the talking. In the two weeks prior to the conferences students go through a process of selecting pieces of work (evidence) that demonstrate their learning and growth on core learning targets (standards) in each class. They reflect on their learning in each class and on their next steps, and prepare to share all this with you in a structured 30 minute academic conversation.

Some Logistics To Note:

  • Sign up early to get your choice!
  • Slots are 45 minutes long and because the schedule is tight, we must stay true to time limits, so arrive early!
  • For blended families – if possible we request (on behalf of the students) that parents from different households attempt to conference together (OR, choose 1 parent to be at the conference) in one slot so that your student leads one conference for all interested parents instead of a separate conference for each parent. If that is not feasible, and it is preferable for the student to lead two conferences, then please sign up for two… we get it. It is also absolutely OK if a grandparent or other caregiver or trusted adult attends if a parent is not available!
  • If you ABSOLUTELY can’t make any of the available times, uh oh. Please email Roger for possible work arounds.

Please be aware of these important no school days related to Student Led Conferences!!

As we near the end of the second Trimester (WOW that happened fast!), we have noticed that quite a few students currently have F’s and/or low D’s in their academic classes. We would like to invite ALL students with these grades to our Saturday Proficiency Day, next Saturday, 3/12, from 9:30 – 12:00. We will have a handful of teachers on hand and some of our student mentors to provide academic catch up support!

Note that we do not have academic intensives this Trimester, so if your student is in danger of failing, this could be one of their last opportunities to get some targeted, one-on-one help raising their grades!

Please sign-up for this Saturday Proficiency Day using THIS Google Form by no later than Tuesday, 3/8, so that we can make sure we have enough staff and student mentors available.

Beginning March 12, Bend-La Pine Schools will continue to strongly recommend masks as a precautionary measure for students and staff, especially for those at high risk of contracting COVID-19, as well as during times when COVID-19 cases are at a high level in the community. However, the ultimate decision will rest with families and individuals.

Our staff will work to reinforce an environment of respect and inclusion for all members of our district, regardless of their personal health decisions.

Additionally, masks will no longer be required on buses after March 12.

No more quarantine after March 12
Effective March 12, 2022, Oregon will pause contact tracing and quarantine for the general population, including K-12 settings.

The Bend-La Pine Schools COVID-19 Response and Recovery Team will send exposure notifications at the classroom level at elementary schools and school wide at the middle and high school level. School-sanctioned teams, clubs, and activities will also be notified, as appropriate.

Isolation continues
Individuals who have COVID-19 must isolate for at least 5 days. Isolation may end after 5 full days if the individual is fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication and symptoms have improved.

Layered mitigation continues

The district will continue to have layered mitigation and safety measures in place to protect the health of the students and staff in our schools. High quality masks and diagnostic tests will be available to those that choose to utilize these tools.

Maintaining a Sense of Community

Students may be feeling excited about the masking change, worried, nervous, anxious or even angry, especially if their choice is different from the majority of their peers. Staff members recognize that students will need opportunities to build empathy and understanding of the different choices/situations they will likely observe in their classrooms. Our responsibility is to honor individual choices and our goal is to create understanding, foster community and prevent divisiveness as much as possible.
