Staff Blog – Week of Sept 24th, 2023

QUICK WORD FROM ROGER & BIG UPS!

Hey team – there is LOTS of “radical” stuff happening on and around campus these days and I am STOKED by the progress we are making this year…. you all are doing GREAT WORK.

These BIG UPS here are for real! I want to add one for Zach and the Student Success Team (in advance)… they will be juggling any/all discipline issues without a 2nd Administrator this week. So thanks is advance to ALL of you for helping out and supporting kids and their success.

Thanks you ALSO for making it possible for me to get away on this backpacking trip with kids. This is a WELCOME return to my roots after too long away from being in the backcountry with kids. I can’t wait…. rain and all!!

OTHER BIG UPS:

  • Karen & Tyler – These two led an “immersion fieldwork” experience for 10th gr Power & Privilege (a public art walk downtown) last week – and Karen has landed a SUPER cool project for 10th graders…. they will be painting a City of Bend sanctioned mural in the parking garage downtown in conjunction with a local social worker and muralist Evan Namkung who is a social worker, “edgy artist” ultra marathoner and way more. HOW COOL!!! AND… if that’s not enough, they are leading an experiential “Privilege Walk” activity this Thursday with the help of Mosley Wotta, Marcus LaGrand and others! Wow – fasten your seatbelts 10th graders 🙂
  • Addy – T1 Schedule Changes are done! Addy took on this role solo this year, and has done an amazing job working through credit requirements, online course requests, and counseling students through tough (often emotional) decisions. No. Small. Feat.
  • Caleb, Allie, & Eric – these folks are working on a line up of cool and fun events for kids this year including a Fall Festival on October 26th (watch for a call for helpers!!) that will be an awesome night featuring a middle school movie night in the loading dock and a high school event in the back gym!

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT UPDATES

You may have noticed that the honeymoon is over 🙂 We saw a marked uptick in students misbehaving in the second half of last week (both RMS & RHS). Here are a few updates and reminders in response:

Make sure you are staying true to our behavior management systems, including the reminder system, cell phone policy, hall passes, and late passes.

Use the Behavior Reporting Form for both “internalized” and “externalized” behavior concerns. To clarify, we are no longer using the old “Staff Concern Form” from last year. Previously, that form was used when a staff member noticed a concerning pattern in a student (head down in class all the time, noticeable hygiene reduction, etc) that wasn’t necessarily “behavior.” This year, go ahead and put it on the same Behavior Reporting Form.

RHS Only: Update to 1st and 4th Late Passes: These are the times when we have by far the most late students, so it is when we have students sign in via the iPad Kiosk. Going forward, each student who signs in will be given a laminated blue dot which they should give to you when they arrive at class… see Jill’s demo below! For all other periods, students who are late to class should be sent to the office for a late slip.

“Sorry I’m late, Norris… the Cosmic Depot was having a 2-for-1 tie dye T sale and we lost track of time!”

EL NATIONAL CONFERENCE INTEREST FORM

Thanks for your interest everyone! We have invited Bethany, Jake and Elinor this year, and are awaiting confirmation on our other high school rep. We promise to bring back lots of ideas and inspiration to share!!

OPEN HOUSE – AN APOLOGY and UPDATE

Team, Harju and I recognize that our staff recruitment efforts around the Back to School Night last week came pretty late, and that likely made it a lot harder for those of you who might have wanted to be there to make plans – OUR APOLOGIES! We are working to plan and prepare and communicate all evening events far more in advance this year. We will get better!

In the end, Harju and I ran it solo, which turned out to be JUST FINE, and actually a lot of fun. We ran a mini crew with parents, pumped up the school mission, introduced Friends of Realms, and then dug into Parentvue/Canvas and What is An Expedition?. Slides here if you want to know what we did and didn’t cover.

It was primarily 6th grade families and a smattering of 9th grade families.

CONFLUENCE (PHOTOS & PLUS DELTAS)

DROP YOUR PHOTOS FROM 1ST 2 WEEKS:

ADD TO THE PLUS/DELTA DOCUMENTS FOR CONFLUENCE Thanks to Laurie for getting one started for RMS! Please add to these docs so we can improve each year:

EXTRA DUTY POSITIONS LOOKING FOR PEEPS!

COMING SOON TO A UKG POSTING NEAR YOU! I am hoping to have Jennifer post these ASAP (like as in this week) and to get these filled by some folks who are interested. These are BOTH really important functions at Realms and I’d love to find the right person for each!

DETENTION SUPERVISOR (starts ASAP):

  • $1100 stipend per person (this is a 1.0 extra duty split in 2)
  • 1 for RMS and 1 for RHS

Role:

  • open up your room for a student (or 2 or 3) on lunch detention on an AS NEEDED basis for the 35 minute lunch period
  • support kids in lunch detention with one of a few different possibilities: a problem solving form, give them time and space to work on homework, or hang out and chat, build relationship with them
  • you should not, in most situations, need to be the one doing the “problem solving”… usually more just supervising them
  • estimate that we will need your services on average 1 or 2 lunch periods per week, though there are many weeks where we do not assign ANY lunch detentions!

INTRAMURAL SUPERVISOR – RHS (starts ASAP):

Role:

  • Create and support a calendar of ongoing intramural activities of any and all kinds that can run at RHS. Primary target here is building healthy and fun activities for students to engage in at lunch times and to build engagement, school spirit etc! It could also connect to Crew and Crew Cup.
  • There are OTHER possibilities with this role, including after school activities/outings but these would be determined by Intramural Supervisor in conjunction with Admin
  • $2500 stipend
