Staff Update 3-15-24

Anita and Lauren – BIG UPS for the Realms Player One expedition – so amazing to see the HIGH QUALITY WORK that came out of this collaborative effort. Final presentations were impressive and kids were incredibly bought in. If you haven’t seen the KTVZ news story, here it is: https://ktvz.com/news/local-news/2024/03/14/they-got-really-competitive-realms-hs-students-compete-in-shark-tank-style-fashion-with-their-video-game-designs/

Middle School Team – BIG UPS to all of you for an amazing Kid Fair last night! Wow – another example of coming together to share and celebrate real learning. Watching proud kids perform and present was awesome. From the buzz in the science classroom, the math explorations in both classroom and gym, to the ears in the humanities classroom and the laughs in the Roman Theater and ALL the cool experiences in between – well done. DOUBLE UPS to Delaney for leading the organizational charge 🙂

3rd trimester fieldwork overview calendar!

Sara is filling in for the next 4 weeks for Bethany! Sarah is an experienced Art teacher (elementary through college level) and happens to be Mom to Jackson who will be a Realms MS 6th grader next year!!

Welcome Ms. Sarah and thanks for being here to help out. Sarah’s temporary District email address is:

[email protected]

Mary Dailey has been hired for the rest of this year as the replacement for Michelle as she sails away into retirement! Welcome to the team Mary!

Mary comes to us with 9 years of experience as a HS ELA teacher at Lake Oswego HS and also as an MTSS Coordinator in California. Mary doesn’t have a live District account yet, but when she does it will be [email protected].

Mary starts officially on April 1st, the Monday after Spring Break!

Wandering students – we’ve seen an increase in students in unsupervised “wanderings” lately and want to ask you to remember that if you have students in class, please supervise them. Some examples:

  • “I am done with my work so my teacher said I could shoot hoops or play volleyball” – this is not a pattern we want to see. We know this is a tough one, but please consider what kind of extensions the student may need and keep them in your class.
  • If you need to give a student a “walk a lap break” from class please be sure they have a pass from you and a specific time to return.
  • If you want students to work outside your classroom, please have them work at tables outside your room so you can keep an eye on them.

Duties – please be sure to be present for your duty AND if you have a sub, be sure that either your sub is aware of your duty or connect with a peer or the admin team so we can cover it for you!

Here is the Trimester 3 Duty Schedule. Please review, and note that yellow boxes are new assignments and pink are the same as trimester 2. If you believe there is a mistake, or that you aren’t going to be able to cover a duty assigned to you (or if something doesn’t seem fair or right), please let Harju know and he will look at finding a swap. We’ve tried to keep duties evenly spread, and AM/PM duties backed up to prep periods.

AND AND FYI TO CREW TEACHERS!

SBAC testing matters to us! We have VERY FEW norm referenced academic outcome assessments at Realms MS and HS!

As a school that is aspiring to become EL Education Credentialed, we need to show academic outcome data that is as good as or better than state and District average!

HOW CAN YOU HELP? If you are one of the teachers above, then you are a key champio of this work with our kids, amd our ask is to be sure you set aside sometime in your classes in the month(s) ahead of the SBAC date to help students get familiar with and and even “excited” about the kids of items they will see on the SBAC. Building students confidence with these assessments and helping them have a positive mindset requires opportunities to PLAY with practice items and build confidence!

  • Certified staff can now take leave (sick, personal etc.) in 1 hr increments… it used to be 4 hour increments, so that’s GOOD! Note that subs are still only hired in 4 or 8 hour increments.
  • ALL Leave MUST be entered into UKG. Here are the things to know:
    • enter your leave into UKG before the date whenever possible, but for emergency sick leave, entering it after is OK
    • you must enter leave for sick leave, personal leave, fieldwork outings, District meetings… basically ANY TIME you are away from your “normal classroom, in person and on site duties”
    • for school business leave, PD leave, fieldwork leave, PLEASE ENTER A NOTE in the system with details (for example… “School Business – District Science Priority Standards work w/ Dean Richards. Sub paid for out of Dean’s budget”) this way Jennifer knows what its for and how to code the costs
  • When entering extra time on your timesheet PLEASE ENTER A NOTE explaining the extra pay
    • for example, when covering for a colleague, you now get paid! Enter… “subbed 2 hours for Jane Doe who was on fieldwork, (or, who was out sick) science and math”
    • if there is some other extra pay arrangement, please refer to the pre-approlval from RW and whatever the activity was for ex “2 hours extra honors planning work approved by RW”

I will timesheet for lunchtime support for helping us make this transition for 3rd trimester. If you are interested in giving up your 30 min duty free lunch 1 or 2 days per week, please let me know and I will compile a team and a plan.

If you are interested in taking on a bigger/coordination role, let me know ASAP!!

We need student and adult support to make this happen – this includes supervising kiddos as we get dishes washed and waste stations managed. However, given it is most people’s lunch break, I can’t require this! I will timesheet as needed though – we want this to happen!

We will transition to reusable plates ONLY once we have adult support plan AND student helper plan in place. It is just hard to get to this without delegating!

Finally, our new neighbors across the street are opening their food trucks this weekend! I just spoke with the manager over there (going over times, rules, contact info, etc), and they are excited to connect with us! (I think they are probably excited to get our students’ money too…)

Zach is planning to go there after school next Friday to kick off Spring Break – come join if you can!

Here is their website with menus, etc.
