I was typing this note as fast as I could today so sorry for any typos or misspellings!

Standards of Practice for CDL and schedules…

This link is to a document that you can copy and paste into an email to your staff.  This message is for STAFF ONLY.  It is an explanation that can come from you re: Standards of Practice and sample schedules.  I know this might be overwhelming to some of your teachers but after considerable thought I decided that we need to get this out there.  You will be asked to roll this out to your teachers during the first week back.  What that looks like will be up to you (see recommended protocols).  I would ask that you come prepared on Tuesday during your horizontal to share what approaches you are considering, any questions you might have, and any additional resources you might include. You will see that there will be three WebEx sessions for staff to participate in to learn more about SOP and schedules.  I would encourage you to attend one of them.  Again, this message and the links in it are for STAFF ONLY – not parents.  A public message about CLD and schedules will be going out next week.

Staffing…

I am meeting with Brad and Lora on Monday. Again, sorry.  I know how frustrating this is not knowing.  I’ll do my best to contact you early next week.

Inservice Week(s) calendar…

See document from Katie attached to this email.

Distribution of Materials…

You may begin sharing items between school and home. (Some of you have asked about this, whether it is sending materials home, or ipads.) Here are the guidelines you need to follow in order to both send or receive materials between school and home. If you can meet these guidelines then you have the green light to begin distributing and collecting materials.

Speaking of Materials…

Here are the links to the literacy kit materials and the math kit materials that are coming your way:

All teacher need to know about this site

Take a few minutes to review our district’s Remote Learning Tools web page. This page likely looks familiar to you – it was in existence last spring – and continues to be updated. Please also share this (multiple times, in a variety of contexts) with your teachers as well.

Metrics…

Here is a new tool that shows county metrics for opening schools to in-person learning. It will be updated every Wednesday.

Switching back and forth…

Please read this message on students switching between Bend-La Pine Online and CDL (or hybrid). Ask me any questions you might have then share it with your staff. You and your staff need to know this information so you are better able to counsel students/parents, but also so your staff are aware that they may gain additional students in her/his classes at any point in the year (particularly when we move to hybrid).

Deliveries…

To reduce traffic at your school, UPS and Fed Ex deliveries will continue to be delivered to our district warehouse. Any packages coming to your school will be delivered during your normal district mail routes.

Translation services…

The need for translation (and possibly interpretation) is going to kick into high gear here very soon. Translation requests should be requested at least 5 days before it is needed. Remember that communication with families at your school should be sent in both Spanish and English. Please spend a few moments reviewing this Language Access Plan – as well as sharing it again with your staff. (The contact for interpreter and translation requests this year is Kelly Marty.) Also, here is a copy of the latest ELL Dept. Newsletter

FYI – k-2 iPads

Just so everyone knows, we are looking at making the k-2 ipads very easy to use and that means having very few apps.  We want to start off small and build from there if needed.  So please let your teachers know that if they are planning on using different apps with their kids they should re-think this.  Currently we are looking at: WebEx, Sora, SeeSaw, and Clever to access Lexia and Dreambox.  Maybe one or two more but possibly not.

A reminder about WebEx

WebEx has some fabulous changes coming our way that we are hoping will be in effect Sept 1st.  The biggest is the addition of breakout rooms.  The instructional tech team will be putting together a list of the changes along with tutorials for them. Stay tuned!

New Teacher Day

New teachers day activities are on Aug 31.  Principals are not required to participate in this virtual event.  However, please think about how you will welcome new staff to your building and possibly what school swag you could have available for them.

Staff kids in the building…

This is a very touchy subject so please be very careful with this and monitor the situation extremely carefully.  We can talk more about this on Tuesday but in general we are allowing staff who work from their classrooms to bring their children to work.  Their children must remain with their parent and supervised by them at all times, in other words, not running around the building, and should comply with the same social distancing guidelines as staff.   We are allowing this flexibility because we know that child care is a challenge for many staff.  If this becomes a disruption and/or children are not following guidelines, principals may be forced to rescind the offer! For classified staff, they have a private office where children are under the direct supervision of their parents and not in contact with others.  Must follow all social distancing guidelines. This is directly from Lora. Additionally,  don’t let staff kids be in earshot of instruction or visible on camera.  No playground times or gym times.

FYI: From Rachel Mavis to Office Managers…

“Full time online students will be enrolled at Bend-La Pine Online first, then concurrent to the home school. The concurrent enrollment is necessary for communications from the home school as well as transcripts etc.

Your numbers may look the same, as the concurrent enrollments will count as enrollments. However, there is a report your administrators can run called ATD625 Average Daily Membership Summary found Synergy SIS>OR>Reports> ATD625.  They will need to enter the first day of school and the last day of school.  This report will produce  counts by grade levels that do not include students who have a concurrent enrollment to your school. Thus not including full time BLSO students.

We are currently working our way through the Elementary Schools and will continue on to the Secondary schools.

Students are who are taking classes as BOTH the brick or mortar AND BLSO, the enrollment will be First at the Home School, then concurrent back to BLSO.

Yes – we are working on a new flow chart….

Thank you!”

FYI from Lora…

“With so much change in the air, I want to announce a few staffing moves within the TLC team.  You may have seen the announcement of our selection of Juan Cuadros as our Executive Director of Teaching and Learning.  Juan has been an educator in Eugene and brings a strong background of experience as a building leader and teacher.  He will help to lead us in moving towards more culturally competent teaching and equitable learning outcomes and experiences for ALL of our students.  Juan has moved into his office and would appreciate the time to meet and get to know each of you.  He plans to pull together the team sometime over the next few weeks.

We have also moved Dean Richards and Julie Walker into leadership positions within the TLC department.  Julie will serve as the Assistant Director of Elementary (K-5) Curriculum, Instruction, and Systems.  Dean will serve as the Assistant Director of Secondary (6-12) Curriculum, Instruction, and Systems.  Many of you are aware of the stellar work Julie and Dean have led in our district over the years.  We are thrilled that they will be helping to move our schools forward in these areas.”

REMINDERS:

  • Work on your signage that you received
  • Enforce masks in the building
  • Create a game plan to start calling families who did not respond to the survey – use the survey when calling – fill it out as you talk to families.
  • Be ready to share ideas and questions about SOP for CDL on Tuesday
  • No supply lists or fundraisers this year
  • Relax over the weekend
