THE SPECIAL EDGE APRIL 16, 2025

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Occupational Therapy Services Next Year

We will have some changes in Occupational Therapy (OT) services that will start in the fall of 2025.  Starting next school year, BLS will hire our own OT’s, rather than purchase the services through the HDESD.

Why is BLS hiring their own OT’s?

After years of consideration and feedback from building staff, the decision was made to administer our own OT program in an effort to increase efficiency.  Having a local group of OTs, who only serve BLS schools, will allow for increased service, coordination, and local oversight of OT programming.

What will be different?

You will not see any remarkable changes in the programming that you have been receiving from OT’s.  That said, we will engage stakeholders and continue to seek feedback as we design.

Do I need to do anything different when writing IEPs or considering OT services at this time?

No…please use your typical process and consideration of OT services on student IEPs moving forward.

We will provide more information ongoing as needed.  If you have any specific questions, feel free to contact any student services administrator.

COACHES CORNER

Breaking Barriers is just around the corner, Tuesday, April 22 and it is free for students and staff to attend!  We look forward to seeing you! Here are the directions on how to register staff and students.

Staff Registration

All staff attending must register individually. When registering, please ensure that the “Company Name” field is filled in so we know which school/district you are coming from. Staff should select “Registration Fee – Defer Payment” when registering.

Student Registration

To simplify the process, we ask that teachers register students by emailing a complete list to [email protected]. Please include the following information for each student:

  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Dietary Restrictions (if any)
  • Breakout Session 1
  • Breakout Session 2
  • Breakout Session 3

We have found this method to be much more efficient than having students register themselves.

If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out to Shela Buerger, Office Manager at CODSN [email protected] or 541.604.2191

**MATRICULATION**

We’re excited to share it is time to start thinking about the student matriculation process! As some of you know, we started a new process last year that is a systematic and streamlined approach to ensure a smoother transition for all students. Find the guidance HERE

This matriculation process is designed to be efficient, transparent, and student-centered. What does this mean for you? Let us break it down:

  1. Structured System: Say goodbye to confusion and hello to clarity! Our new process is carefully structured, guiding staff through each step with ease.
  2. District Management: With the support of our student services district team, we’re ensuring that every aspect of matriculation is managed seamlessly. From student tools to communication systems, we’ve got you covered!
  3. Time to Complete: Rest assured, there’s plenty of time to complete the process before the end of the school year. We understand the importance of a stress-free transition, and we’re committed to providing ample time for students and teams to navigate the process.
  4. Educator Network Day: Mark your calendars! Our upcoming Educator Network Day, 4/24 will offer valuable insights and support to ensure a successful matriculation process. It’s an opportunity for collaboration and learning of our collective efforts.

Please save and bookmark this link; Student Folders, this is where you will find information on students coming to your school. Once a sending school completes a google form, a folder for your school will be created. If you don’t see a folder that is because no forms have been completed yet.  Once in the folder, click on a student’s document, if there are any attachments, there will be a link at the bottom of the document to take you to those items.

Please try to have your forms all completed by Educator Network Day on April 23rd. Secondary will have this time to work with school teams to ask questions, share farther information etc.

Please reach out to your building coach if you have any questions or need support.

BUSING UPDATE

Not all bus rides are created equal—especially for students with unique needs. When adding transportation to an IEP, teams can consider bus adaptations (like seat belts or lifts) or environmental supports, such as riding a smaller or quieter bus. The key is making sure the ride to school is just as supportive as the classroom!

UPDATE ON $8.9M SPED STIPENDS

The district submitted the grant application on January 13, 2025, and we received notice that the stipend amount for each qualifying employee is estimated to be $445.86 before taxes.  Currently, we are waiting for ODE to send the grant Inter-governmental agreement (IGA) for signature.  As of Feb. 17, ODE has not been able to provide a timeline for when we will receive the IGA for signature.  Once the IGA is signed, the district can claim the money for the stipends in EGMS, and Payroll can begin processing the stipends for disbursement through employee paychecks.  Please be on the look-out for additional communication regarding the timing for issuing the stipends.  For more information, please see the Special Education Staff Stipends Guidance.

Learning Specialist Transfer Interviews:

If you are a learning specialist and are interested in working at a different site next school year, you may apply internally and participate in our transfer interview process.  You will be placed into a transfer pool, interviewed, and will have an opportunity to indicate which sites you would like to be considered for transfer if they become available.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Log in to your District UKG, either through the portal, or at this site: bls.fyi/UKG

Path: Menu – My Info – My Career – Search for Jobs

In the search field, type ‘request’ and this will narrow down the jobs so that you can select ‘Apply for Job’ for the ‘Learning Specialist – Transfer Request 2025/26 School Year’ posting.

In the application, read the instructions carefully. At one point you will get to a screen with a text box titled “Cover Letter”. This is NOT an upload place and will not take much text. Just put in a short note to the hiring administrator.  You should not need to submit a cover letter or resume.

When you are done, select ‘Submit’

As a reminder, per the CBA, this transfer process is open to any contract learning specialist.  Probationary 3 Learning Specialists that were moved to contract status as of the February 11, 2025 board meeting, are eligible to participate in the transfer interview process.

If you are still probationary and are interested in working at another site, then you can apply to any open jobs through the UKG hiring portal.  Please reach out to our office with any questions.
