CONTINUING EDUCATION

Summer On-Line Conference

5th Annula Comer Children’s School Nurses Continuing Education Day

August 2, 2024 (6am – 1pm).

I attended this conference last year and it was really good (and free!). Nurses are on a 190-day contract. The days during the last week of August (where we officially return to school from summer break) account for 189 contract days. Day 190 can be used for continuing education opportunities. We do not specifically schedule anything for day 190 to allow nurses the flexibility throughout the year to attend any conferences not scheduled on a contracted workday.

SAFETY

Overdose Emergency Kit update

Information was included in your blogs last week on the Overdose Emergency Kits that each school received from the Oregon Health Authority Saves Lives Oregon Initiative. Questions have come up regarding kit placement locations in school buildings along with whether communication should be sent out regarding the overdose crisis and use of Narcan.

Currently, there are 2 doses of Narcan in every AED cabinet in our schools. Additionally, there are 2 doses of Narcan in middle and high school athletic AED backpacks. The additional Narcan doses and the emergency kit cabinets received from OHA should be stored as follows:

Middle and High Schools (each received 2 emergency kit cabinets and extra doses of Narcan)

  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school nurse’s office.
  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school principal’s office.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan in each office of the assistant principals.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan to be placed in the orange front office first aid kit.
  • All remaining extra Narcan doses received should be stored in the overdose emergency kit cabinets located in the nurse’s and principal’s offices.

Elementary Schools (each received 1 emergency kit cabinet)

  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school nurse’s office.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan to be placed in the orange front office first aid kit.
  • All remaining extra Narcan doses received should be stored in the overdose emergency kit in the school nurse’s office.

Please inform your staff about the locations of the additional doses of Narcan. Many staff received Narcan training at the beginning of the school year by their school nurse. For additional Narcan training, please connect directly with your school nurse to arrange a training time.

SCOLIOSIS SCREENINGS

Scoliosis Screenings Discontinued

The information below was included in the middle school blogs last week.

After careful consideration and in consultation with medical professionals, Bend-La Pine Schools has decided to discontinued scoliosis screenings in our school system. While scoliosis screenings have been a longstanding practice, recent medical research and expert advice have prompted us to reassess the necessity and effectiveness of such screenings.

Spinal health is an important part of comprehensive health and wellness plans for individuals. Students can receive scoliosis screenings as part of their routine well child examinations. Families are encouraged to reach out to their student’s primary care provider to schedule a well child visit.

Below are some resources for students who do not have an established primary care provider:

SNOW DAYS

Makeup School Days

Due to the weather closures in January, there will be two makeup school days at the end of the school year. The days will be June 17 and 18. (Hopefully you haven’t purchased airfare tickets yet.)

The last workday of the school year is Thursday, June 20, 2024, for all regular nursing staff. (3 people have already requested these days off.)

**Per Lora Nordquist on 2/26/24 – Approval of these requests will be made by HR leadership, not direct supervisors. For those nurses that have already requested this time off, Tami will let you know what the process is for submitting a request when information becomes available.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Tips for Self-Care

Last week, self-care tip #2 (of 6), Practice Self Compassion, was shared with you.

Tip #3

TREAT YOUR BODY WELL

One of the biggest self-care moves we can make is to nourish our bodies with all the good things that it deserves. Your body is essential, so don’t fuel it with that discounted Valentine’s Day candy.

Consume nutrient-rich foods to give your immune system a boost, take your vitamins, and drink plenty of water. Taking care of your body and ensuring that you are consuming the right foods will provide you with clean-burning fuel to get you through the day all while keeping a positive mindset.

In addition, be sure to try and fit in some activity and time outside in the fresh air.
