Gun owners invited to pick up free locks for their firearms

Bend-La Pine Schools partners with community organizations working to promote safe storage of firearms in households. The goal is to prevent children and other unauthorized users from accessing guns kept in homes and vehicles.

Gun owners are welcome to pick up free keyed cable and trigger locks firearms at the Education Center, 520 NW Wall Street, in Bend. The locks were purchased by Gun Owners for Responsible Ownership with a grant, in part, from St. Charles Healthcare System. The nonprofit GOFRO also shared information on options to safely secure firearms at this link.

Central Oregon Gun Safety Advocates is also active in distributing free gun locks. Visit the COGSA website for details.

Here are additional resources for firearms safety:

Alliance For A Safe Oregon, an organization that works to prevent gun-related homicides, suicides, injuries, and unintentional shootings.

Be SMART For Kids, which promotes safety with its SMART program. SMART stands for:

  • Secure all guns in your home and vehicles
  • Model responsible behavior around guns
  • Ask about unsecured guns in other homes
  • Recognize the role of guns in suicide
  • Tell your peers to Be SMART

From Sean Reinhart:

Please keep this resource in mind if/when you engage with families on lethal means and safe storage while completing a suicide risk screen. This partnership and opportunity will be available ongoing and you can refer families to this resource.

FAN and the Holidays

Just a reminder that FAN does not coordinate Christmas/holiday gift needs for families.  This has been the case for over 10 years.  FAN resources are maxed out prioritizing basic needs (utilities/heat, rent, clothing, hygiene supplies, food, etc).  There are many community-based organizations that do support religious or holiday-based requests like Christmas gifts, such as Salvation Army, Giving Plate, etc.  Herehere, and here are a few sample resources.

If you have a family seeking support with Christmas gifts or holiday resources: Please refer them to those community-based agencies, not your FAN Advocate.

If you have individuals wanting to donate holiday gifts and toys to families in need: Please refer them to those organizations, who are collecting and distributing toys and holiday donations.

PEARS

Did you know that December is National Pear Month?

Pears contain good levels of dietary fiber, antioxidants, minerals and vitamin A, C, E and K.  They are low in calories and are considered an extremely safe food source for those with food allergies.

The majority of pears sold in the United States are grown on the west coast, mainly Oregon and Washington.

Pears are part of the rose family.

Meeting minutes

Concussion Coaching Flyer from Wendy Beall

Nurse Hannah is off on her 2-year leave to Italy! We had a fun farewell get together and Molly shared an amazing poem.

Ode to Hannah

In the halls of our school, with a skip and a cheer,
Lives a tech savvy nurse Hannah, it’s you we hold dear.
With curly blonde hair and a heart full of zest,
She makes nurses laugh when we’re half dead and need rest.

With two wild boys who keep her on the run,
She juggles her passions and makes life oh so fun.
From yoga to biking, she conquers the trails,
At Orange Theory, she never fails!

From COPA with Cynthia, they discussed Bend’s dating scene,
To conquering mountains- she’s a backpacking queen.
Now she’s off to Sicily on a life changing quest,
As a DOD nurse she’ll best all the rest!

We’ll miss her quick wit, her compassionate care,
The way she lights up any room with her flair.
So here’s to dear Hannah, as you spread your wings wide,
Know we’ll always cherish you, our Bend-La Pine pride!

So go on, fierce warrior, make Sicily shine,
We’ll hold onto your spirit, forever divine.
With laughter and love, we send you away,
In our hearts, Nurse Hannah, you’ll always stay!

We have 2 upcoming trainings:

La Pine High School Library: Wed Oct 23rd at 2:30pm

Caldera High School (rm 210): Wed Nov 13th at 3pm

Please share this with your schools and encourage staff to attend! If we do not have people sign up we will have to cancel.

October 3rd, 2024

We made it through September! In case no one has told you today. You are amazing, and our students are so lucky to have you!

Here are a few daily mantras I use to try and maintain some sanity in this busy school year.

  • I am strong, I am capable, I am kind.
  • I do enough, I have enough, I am enough.
  • I am me, and that’s enough for today.
  • I am not in control of anything or anyone, only myself.
  • My voice is valuable and my opinion matters.
  • At this moment of tears, I am reminded of my strength and resilience. I will emerge from this experience stronger, wiser, and more compassionate.
  • Just start.

Have the best rest of your week.

~ Erica

We have 2 Stop the Bleed trainings scheduled for staff

I have ordered replacement Narcan Kits for the ones we have expiring in October. It is the kits originally placed in the AED cabinets that are expiring. If you need a replacement, please fill out the green AED Cabinet Naloxone Expiration Date column on the AED Master Spread Sheet. That is the list we will be using when we send them out to schools.

PLEASE DO NOT THROW AWAY YOUR EXPIRED NARCAN KITS. You can send the entire kit to Michelle once you receive your new one.

Submit any Medication Questions for April here.

There is a pallet full of the small pump hand sanitizer bottles in distribution. Feel free to order some for your schools!

September 23rd-27th

When: September 25th

What: Medicaid training with April Diehl

Where: Elk Meadow library 2-3pm

Some of the original Narcan/Naloxone we received are expiring in October. Can you please check yours and update the AED Master Spreadsheet. If you scroll to the right side, you can enter expiration dates. Email Michelle if your school will need more Narcan/Naloxone once your supply expires in October. We received extra last year so most schools should have plenty.

The FDA extended the expiration date for Naloxone Nasal Spray from 3 years to 4 years on products manufactured after 1/17/24. It does not extend the products manufactured prior to that date. Follow the expiration date that is on the box.  For more info.

OHA / ODE has changed the Communicable Disease Guidance for Schools guidelines this year for students returning after having vomiting or diarrhea. They may now return to school after 24hrs of no vomiting or no diarrhea (this replaces the previous 48hr guideline)

Here is the link to the full Communicable Disease Guidance packet:

https://www.oregon.gov/ode/students-and-family/healthsafety/Documents/Updated%20CD%20Guidance.pdf

Please make sure you are using this PPE Order form for ordering supplies. It was recently updated so distribution could read the requests more easily. If you ordered something that has not come in, it may have been on the old form so just resubmit it.

Oliver has created a guide to help staff and nurses maintain the orange first aid kit that sits in the front office. It even has some suggested links for replenishing supplies if needed. We found some lidocaine burn gel packs that were expired in some of the kits. If you find that in yours, please dispose of it. Orange First Aid Kit Guidelines

The Bend La Pine school district policy on head lice remains as follows: for any students found to have live lice while at school, they will be sent home and may return once they have received treatment. This policy was recently reviewed and the decision was made to continue with it. Please see the full head lice procedure here.

Each elementary school will be receiving one box of Nix lice treatment for any family that may need help obtaining it.

Have a great week everyone!!
