Tips for Self-Care

Last week, self-care tip #5 (of 6),  See the Positive, was shared with you.

Tip #6 SEEK SUPPORT

Sometimes, these things are too hard to do, and that’s okay. Seek out support from family or friends and find other simple self-care tactics that help you.

Youcan reach out to a trusted friend or family member. However, you might have better success speaking to a therapist; they can relate to what you are experiencing and offer advice to you that pertains to your situation.

Give yourself time and room to grow and change that mindset. These steps aren’t easy, and it’s something that you don’t develop overnight. But once you apply it and make it a part of your daily routine, it can dramatically change your mood – and your life.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • April 10 – All nurse meeting (2-4) *Start time is earlier, location Silver Rail Elementary, Media Center
  • April 11 – Work day. This day should be used to complete BLS workflow projects. (Tami will be checking in with nurses about their projects during the 4/10 nurse meeting. It is the expectation that all nurses contribute to the workflow process. (mandatory)

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Summer On-Line Conference

5th Annula Comer Children’s School Nurses Continuing Education Day

August 2, 2024 (6am – 1pm).

Tami attended this conference last year and it was really good (and free!). Nurses are on a 190-day contract. The days during the last week of August (where we officially return to school from summer break) account for 189 contract days. Day 190 can be used for continuing education opportunities. We do not specifically schedule anything for day 190 to allow nurses the flexibility throughout the year to attend any conferences not scheduled on a contracted workday.

MEETINGS/TRAININGS

Nurse staff meetings/trainings on the following days: (This is for regular nurses only. Substitute nurses do not need to attend.)

  • Wednesday, April 3, 2024 – Acuity Study Hall with Hannah, 230-345, location Pacific Crest, Cornice Room (2nd floor)
    • Helpful tip- Before the meeting, make a list of students who you think need an acuity assessment.
    • You can do this by printing out an HLT 401 and review health conditions / see who has a health plan (point!)
    • Ask front office/counselors if they have anyone on their radar that might need an acuity assessment.
    • Bring your laptops, access to the Line-by-Line Criteria document, several of those acuity assessment tools printed out (ideally one for each student you will asses).

Tips for Self-Care

Last week, self-care tip #4 (of 6), Enrich Your Mind, was shared with you.

Tip #5

SEE THE POSITIVE

It can be easy to get overwhelmed at work. Try to find the hopeful and positive stories of school nursing. Instead of turning on the news in the evening, find a movie that makes you happy. You can look for a comedy that will make you laugh or a feel-good story that will give you hope. Having a moment to feel good about something will make you feel better, will increase your mental health, and help you relax.

WATCH YOUR COFFEE!!

From Scott McDonald

Your giant Stanley Cup may be costing your school money!

We have been issuing teacher computers to all certified staff since 2006.  Eighteen years ago.  In each of those eighteen years, our breakage has been relatively flat.  That is, until January of this year.  For the first half of the school year, we had 4 teacher laptops turned in for non-warrantied damage.  Since January 2024 we have already received 18!  Eight of which the user reported that a (water) spill was the source of the damage.

Your school or facility will now be responsible for the cost of any computer repair or replacement caused by damage or negligence.  Any money going toward repair is less money going toward necessary technology updates or innovation.

Now, we can’t officially link the cause of this uptick to the popularity of Stanley sippy cups that seems to have occurred at exactly the same time. However, it is quite a coincidence!   Please help us and your school by keeping any beverage on a separate surface away from your computer.

Nurse staff meetings/trainings on the following days: (this is for regular nurses only. Substitute nurses do not need to attend.

E-Bikes and E-Scooters

Communication to Families about E-Bikes and E-Scooters:

After much public comment to our school board and administrators, and in consultation with law enforcement, we have created a new rule governing e-bikes and e-scooters on school campuses (KGB-AR: Public Conduct on District Property).

Under this new rule, those who operate bicycles, electric bicycles or electric scooters must be in compliance with Oregon motor vehicle and bike regulations and laws on school property. The rule also states, “E-bikes and E-scooters are prohibited on district property for persons under age 16.” Accordingly, the District will no longer allow any student under age 16 to bring an e-bike or e-scooter onto school property.

We are giving families time now and April 8 to adjust to this change and are asking each school to send out this family letter to our families.

HERE is the family letter (in Spanish and English) for each school to send to their communities.  Please send at your earliest convenience.  If you want to personalize the message for your school, or add additional details to the second bullet on which office or staff member can issue parking permits, please make sure a CAFE Program member adds that same info to the Spanish version on page 2.

Scott Maben will be sending each school a few of the signs to post at your bike rack areas.

Management of E Bike and E Scooters on High School Campuses:

  1. We treat e-bikes and e-scooters as we do student motor vehicles
  2. Students must register their e-bike and e-scooters and receive a parking pass that must be clearly displayed on the e-bikes and e-scooters at all times while on campus
  3. e-bikes and e-scooters parking passes could be a small sticker on the bike and on the student’s ID card
  4. e-bikes and e-scooters registration use the same or similar form we use for motor vehicles
  5. The registration process will include age verification through a Synergy look-up
  6. No fee to register e-bikes and e-scooters
  7. e-bikes and e-scooters on school grounds without proof of registration will be locked/chained in the bike rack
  8. We have launched a comprehensive district marketing campaign regarding the new policy and practices at each school; information has been sent to K-12 families and staff. High schools are asked to send this letter to families at your earliest convenience.

Please reach out to Katie Legace or Kinsey Martin if you have questions.

Overdose Emergency Kit update

Information was included in your blogs last week on the Overdose Emergency Kits that each school received from the Oregon Health Authority Saves Lives Oregon Initiative. Questions have come up regarding kit placement locations in school buildings along with whether communication should be sent out regarding the overdose crisis and use of Narcan.

Currently, there are 2 doses of Narcan in every AED cabinet in our schools. Additionally, there are 2 doses of Narcan in middle and high school athletic AED backpacks. The additional Narcan doses and the emergency kit cabinets received from OHA should be stored as follows:

Middle and High Schools (each received 2 emergency kit cabinets and extra doses of Narcan)

  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school nurse’s office.
  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school principal’s office.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan in each office of the assistant principals.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan to be placed in the orange front office first aid kit.
  • All remaining extra Narcan doses received should be stored in the overdose emergency kit cabinets located in the nurse’s and principal’s offices.

Elementary Schools (each received 1 emergency kit cabinet)

  • 1 overdose emergency kit cabinet mounted to the wall in the school nurse’s office.
  • 1 box (2 doses) of Narcan to be placed in the orange front office first aid kit.
  • All remaining extra Narcan doses received should be stored in the overdose emergency kit in the school nurse’s office.

Please inform your staff about the locations of the additional doses of Narcan. Many staff received Narcan training at the beginning of the school year by their school nurse. For additional Narcan training, please connect directly with your school nurse to arrange a training time.

SCOLIOSIS SCREENINGS

Scoliosis Screenings Discontinued

The information below was included in the middle school blogs last week.

After careful consideration and in consultation with medical professionals, Bend-La Pine Schools has decided to discontinued scoliosis screenings in our school system. While scoliosis screenings have been a longstanding practice, recent medical research and expert advice have prompted us to reassess the necessity and effectiveness of such screenings.

Spinal health is an important part of comprehensive health and wellness plans for individuals. Students can receive scoliosis screenings as part of their routine well child examinations. Families are encouraged to reach out to their student’s primary care provider to schedule a well child visit.

Tips for Self-Care

Last week, self-care tip #2 (of 6), Practice Self Compassion, was shared with you.

Tip #3

TREAT YOUR BODY WELL

One of the biggest self-care moves we can make is to nourish our bodies with all the good things that it deserves. Your body is essential, so don’t fuel it with that discounted Valentine’s Day candy.

Consume nutrient-rich foods to give your immune system a boost, take your vitamins, and drink plenty of water. Taking care of your body and ensuring that you are consuming the right foods will provide you with clean-burning fuel to get you through the day all while keeping a positive mindset.

In addition, be sure to try and fit in some activity and time outside in the fresh air.

MENTAL HEALTH

From Jamie Gunter

The Student Safe software is a place where we eventually will be able to enter threats for behavior safety assessment. The training received on Wednesday, February 28th was for entry of suicide risk and NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury).

Staff were given a handout to enter NSSI and Suicide Ideation.

When entering a concern for NSSI, check the NSSI box, then proceed to enter the information. If a student had an NSSI and SI, you could do a concern and check the box for NSSI and SI, then go on to do an assessment for suicide ideation. The only time in a school setting “threats” would be checked is for a threat assessment.

The following information regarding overdose emergency kits was included with the level leader school blogs last week. Nurses – please enter the expiration dates of your Narcan supplies on the AED Master Spreadsheet.

*Tami has reached out to level leaders again regarding any overdose crisis messaging. To be continued…

Overdose Emergency Kits

BLS received several Overdose Emergency Kits through OHA’s Save Lives Oregon Initiative. Each kit contains:  Administration instructions, 4 boxes of naloxone, 2 CPR face shields, and 1 emergency box for storage. Each middle and high school received two kits and elementary schools received one kit.

Overdose Emergency Kit Location

Ideally, the Overdose Emergency Kit box should be mounted on a wall next to an AED cabinet so that it is easily accessible. However, this may not be feasible for your school site. Please consult with your school nurse about where the best location would be for these Overdose Emergency Kits. AED cabinets still contain 2 doses of naloxone.

Overdose Emergency Kit Location and Expiration Date Information

Once the location of the Overdose Emergency Kits have been identified, the school nurse will add the locations and the naloxone expiration dates to our district AED Master Spreadsheet.

Tips for Self-Care

Tips for Self-Care

Last week, self-care tip #1 (of 6), Recognize Your Value, was shared with you. If you didn’t complete the first tip, it’s not too late to recognize your value!!! Do it!!!!

Research shows that the more we practice being kind and compassionate with ourselves, the more we’ll increase the habit of self-compassion. There is no road map when working in healthcare, so give yourself a break. Most days, you are doing the best you can, and that’s okay. Take your situation day by day or hour by hour and take physical and mental breaks when you can.

Tips for Self-Care

Over the next 6 weeks, the BLS Nurse Blog will have 1 self-care tip per week. Rather than put all 6 tips at one time, let’s break them up with the goal to work towards achieving the presented self-care tip of the week during the following 7 days.

Remind yourself that you are making a difference despite all the long days and many challenges.

Get in the habit of positive affirmations to remind yourself how important you are.

Some steps you can take to get yourself comfortable with positive affirmations include:

  • Every morning you should wake up and say to yourself one thing you like about yourself.
  • Write something motivational on a sticky note and put it on your mirror.
  • Get a friend or family member to repeat these affirmations to you.

HEALTH NOTES

Deschutes County confirms case of human plague in local resident.

Deschutes County Health Services has confirmed a case of human plague in a local resident. The individual was likely infected by their symptomatic pet cat.

“All close contacts of the resident and their pet have been contacted and provided medication to prevent illness,” said Dr. Richard Fawcett, Deschutes County Health Officer.

Symptoms of plague usually begin in humans two to eight days after exposure to an infected animal or flea. These symptoms may include a sudden onset of fever, nausea, weakness, chills, muscle aches, and/or visibly swollen lymph nodes.

Plague is rare in Oregon, with the last case reported in 2015. It spreads to humans or animals through a bite from an infected flea or by contact with an animal sick with the disease. The most common animals to carry plague in Central Oregon are squirrels and chipmunks, but mice and other rodents can also carry the disease.

APPRECIATE YOUR FEET

Foot health is essential in maintaining overall health and well-being.

Did you know that each foot has around 200,000 nerve endings which function as sensory receptors to transmit information to your brain about pressure, temperature and movement. This allows you to move, balance or touch something without conscious thought or effort – a system known as proprioception.

ERIN’S LAW

FYI – What is Erin’s Law?

Erin’s Law requires that all public schools offer child abuse prevention education to help children gain the confidence to have a voice, and to speak up in cases of sexual abuse.

Erin’s Law is named after childhood sexual assault survivor, author, speaker and activist Erin Merryn. In 2012, Erin introduced the legislation in her home state of Illinois, requiring that all public schools implement a prevention-oriented child sexual abuse program. Oregon adopted Erin’s Law in 2015.
