1/7/19-1/11/19 Weekly Update

“People often want to know ‘what works’ in education, but the simple truth is that everything works somewhere, and nothing works everywhere.”

           Dylan Wiliam

Goodbye Party for Barbry

The Deans are hosting a goodbye party for Barbry on January 12th.  More details to follow later, but Paul asked me to please save the date and spread the word.

Gifts Galore and More!

A huge thank you to the 4/5 team and students for running such fun community-building events these past days.  Every aspect form the giving and receiving, to the guiding and the following, for our students is a wonderful phenomenon to witness and I am very appreciative of everyone’s contribution to making it all work so well.  I sincerely hope everyone’s buckets are feeling filled.

Little Trees

The little trees you got yesterday morning are a type of spruce.  They should be able to be transferred into the ground in the spring if you want to plant them outside or they should do well in a larger pot if you want to keep them indoors.  My intent was to find a gift that had potential to grow and thrive, as is my wish for you all. I really hope you enjoy them!

Room 17 Leak

FYI – we had some water sneak its way into room 17 during the downpour on Tuesday morning.  This was extremely frustrating to discover considering the work that went into those walls, however it appears the water is entering from further up the building.   We have our construction team working on this to come up with a solution.

PTO teacher rep

During leadership we have been discussing teacher representation at PTO meetings.  Cami and Marieka are both up for this challenge and would like to suggest we go ahead move forward in this manner.  Cami and Marieka will be charged with attending the meetings (possibly attending PTO-board meetings when necessary) representing  and we will establish some time either during staff meetings or SIWs for us to have any dialog as a staff. I would not discourage anyone else form attending meetings, but I would encourage you to use them for the teachers’ unified voice during those meetings. Thank you, Cami and Marieka for stepping forward for this responsibility.

Upcoming Field Trips

As an added communication measure I will do my best to keep this as a standing update with field trips occurring during the upcoming couple weeks.  I will take the information from our google calendar so please help me keep it accurate and let me know when corrections are needed.

1/8/19 – 9:15 -1:45 – Martinson/Vickery Field Trip

1/9/19  – 9:15 -1:45 – Woock/Green Field Trip

Math Learning Opportunity

The link below is an online course designed for educators.  This particular one shows some potential for providing tips for how technology can actually enhance and support teaching rather than add a burden to the mix.  Please let me know if you are interested in this opportunity.

Laptop Upgrade

We received our next allotment of 7 upgraded laptops.  After we return from winter break, I will work with Rob to identify the oldest Mac Airs which can be rotated out.  Unfortunately these new laptops do have different input/outputs so (of course) there will be some new Apple dongles needed for certain conditions.  The good news, is we will be less dependent on those adapters with the apple TVs in place.

12/17 – 12/21 Weekly Update

I loved that video this morning!  We really take so much for granted every day and I appreciated that humorous way to make that sink and be more grateful for the little things.  Marieka – thank you for getting the video.

100-Year Celebration Committee

It’s time to think about this celebration for next year.  I met with Barbry to pick her brain about the 90th celebration and I have a storage bin of all that stuff.  We have some Site Council Parent members interested, however from what I understand we probably need to extend the invitation to a wider audience as well.  My hope is to form a dedicated group ready to start planning in January or early February. I am in uncharted territory here, so please provide some guidance for what you want here.

iPad Keyboards

With our students utilizing the keyboards with iPads more often we are starting to see more of these hardware pieces breaking or simply not functioning.  Unfortunately we do not have replacements available to us so we are on our own to replace these. Keyboards are $35 apiece, so this expense could add up quickly.  What I would like to ask of you right now is to share and redistribute our current inventory with each other to make sure everyone who needs a keyboard has access at the time (we never seem to be using all these at the same time).  As we move into next year, I will look into a bulk order to replace all malfunctioning keyboards and pick up a few extras to provide replacements. I also want to do my best to avoid the complication of buying a keyboard that won’t work with the future updated iPads (with whatever connection, adapter Apple decides to develop at the time).

PLC

I shared the description in italics below in August 2017 (so it’s been awhile) so I wanted to revisit this description for everyone’s benefit.  The general description below is still accurate as far as our intent for these meetings, however I have not required specific agendas or meeting notes (although some of you have provided these for me which I do appreciate).  I will attempt to provide a concrete example of how this can work using this past week; Last Wednesday we had a great SIW with Kerry which left many of you wanting more time with your teams to dig into your math lessons and identify when and where you could use number talks.  This past Tuesday was a scheduled PLC so it would have been the perfect time to count on having your team ready to follow up with the work from the SIW. So in an ideal world when we finish our work in an SIW and want more time with our team to continue the work, the next PLC should provide that time.  I will try to be better about identifying these times and calling them out either during the SIW or in the updates.

“Grade level professional development meetings (PLCs) – meetings designed for professional learning, examining growth mindset practices, practicing math best practices, observing model-lessons on differentiation, sharing data for formative decisions….

In many cases the agenda will be predetermined by our school design work.  Agendas and meeting notes will be completed on google docs (format to be provided).

Grade Level PLCs will occur approximately once a month.”

Master Schedule 2019-2020 (Does “2020” jump out to anyone else?!?!?)

With the start times changing next year, it might be a good time to consider revising our master schedule.  Linked below is our current schedule shifted by one hour to start at 8:00am. I posed some questions with our leadership group last week to share with you, so please take a little time to think about this (even though this is a long way off, it’s good to get a start soon if we revise).

Master Schedule 19-20

Heated Walkway

You may have noticed are “heated” walkway between the buildings is not working so well.  The problem was finally identified and now Brad has a method to manually override when necessary so we finally have a solution in place.  Thank you to Brad for sticking with the problem and getting it resolved!

12/10-12/14 Weekly Update

“Our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.”  William James

Storyline Leadership

One of my most important responsibilities as principal is to develop leadership opportunities for staff.  We develop leadership in a variety of ways; branching out of our comfort zones, sharing expertise with others, developing new networks, and opening ourselves up to new learning, etc.  Developing leadership skills and expertise within our teachers directly impacts our own students and our community. It builds teacher efficacy and that is one of the most powerful influencers of student success.

Earlier in the year the increase of our storyline consulting line item (by $3000) on the PTO budget was questioned.  At the time, I explained the intent of this increase was to provide funding for opportunities for Highland teachers to provide consulting to others in addition to the typical expense we use for working with Colleen.  I also provided a few potential examples (Sisters, Barnes Butte & Charter School in Redmond), however as of that particular date there was only one confirmed experience for us which was the COSA conference in October.  Some of that funding was used to provide release time to prepare for that presentation. As a result of going to that conference another opportunity emerged involving our district coaches and Silver Rail teachers. This past Monday, some of our 2/3 team followed up with that opportunity and used their experience to help develop a storyline on Native Americans; they will be looking to work with Silver Rail for another half day in the near future.  We are looking forward to sharing more details on this experience later.

Last year, we accepted $12,000 from PTO to go to the conference in Slovenia during the summer, so to use $3000 with similar reasons with intent to also benefit local teachers and students is a good use of our PTO dollars.  When donors give to the PTO during the Annual Giving Campaign they give to HIghland and the whole picture, they give in order to allow the PTO Board and the school to do what’s best for kids.

In response to this whole process potentially causing suspicion or mistrust within our staff, my hope is that we all work together as one professional team and recognize this as growth for all of Highland.  My hope is you all recognize this for the exciting opportunity that it is for the storyline community. At the very least, enjoy the success of your fellow colleagues. And my hope is you might be motivated to seek out and create similar opportunities for yourself and other members of our team, as it is already positively impacting the Storylines being developed at Highland.  As the quote above points out, we have the ability to choose one thought over another, so we can choose to trust rather than the alternate.

The last point I would like to make on this topic is this; this has been an evolving topic.  I am doing my best to share what I know, when I know it. As I mentioned in the first staff meeting of the year in August, this is an unknown and therefore a risk, however the only true risk was potentially not spending the money due to not having opportunities.  We’ve used almost half of that $3000 for the opportunities presented above and I am hopeful we will see more opportunities in the near future.

Student Shadow Project

Our district leadership is asking all principals to spend some time shadowing specific students for an entire day.  Neither you or the student will know whom is being shadowed, but I will select a few different students and set up some days to be their shadow for the day.  You don’t need to do anything differently, nor worry, but I did want to give you a heads up as it will be unexpected when I spend most of the day in your room (lucky you, whoever you are!).

Hallway Expectations

While I am asking you to spend a little time with your students working on these behavior expectations, please keep things manageable for both our students and yourselves; it’s simply not realistic to expect all students to be able to walk the halls silently all the time, especially independently, and it’s not realistic for you to be with your kids in the hallway every time.

Since this topic comes up frequently I feel I should point out some major factors that work against any long-standing success;

  1. First, students have their behavior controlled for a large part of the day and the need for them to exercise control over their own behavior is always building.  We have a few time frames throughout the day that alleviate that tension. Extending the adult control of their behavior beyond the classroom, library or office is unnatural and will constantly require reinforcement.
  2. Secondly, environmental conditions don’t really support our efforts.  Our halls are constantly full of noise, shoes on the floor, doors closing, lockers closing, voices carrying out from the classrooms, students and adults work together in the halls and naturally use their voices.  When students hear voices they feel permission to speak themselves.

I don’t want you to throw your hands in the air and give up, but I do want you to channel some of our Mindful Educators content and be kind to yourself and your colleagues as breakdowns in these behaviors are to be expected.  When those breakdowns happen we should expect the following from everyone;

  1. The students are not talking with the intent to be disruptive, disrespectful, or defiant – they are not misbehaving, so they should not be treated as such.
  2. All of our colleagues are doing their best and if they are not with their students in the halls they should expect empathy, understanding, and forgiveness when the breakdowns occur.
  3. There are other solutions that require much less effort and time.  A closed door can be very effective, plan slight modifications in your lessons that align with the fixed/predictable transition times, consider a classroom change with your team for next year.

Words are Powerful

If you are interested in influencing students in the most positive manner with your words, please read this following article summary.  This may not be an easy read as there is actually quite a bit to remember (I have to re-read it frequently), but it’s very thought-provoking and putting this information to use can really impact our students in powerful way.  I appreciated some of the specific parts of speech examples to help me examine my own messages.

Rethinking the Math Block

For an alternative way to design a math block please consider the following abstract.

Some benefits to this or similar designs include the following;

  • Increased cognitively demanding tasks for all students.
  • Increased student choice.
  • Improved social status for all students.
  • Maintains similar high expectations for all students.
  • Provides more opportunities for teachers to increase time with students who need it the most without clearly identifying them as the lower performers.
  • Increased student talk and thinking.  Decrease teacher talk.
  • Increased opportunities for specific feedback versus grading/scoring.
  • Increased student responsibility and independence.

It’s incredibly challenging to personalize learning for all our students and although we have a significantly large percentage of students at or above grade level, we still have a wide variation and I know our intent is to always try to provide that challenge for each and every student.  Redesigning the structure of your math lesson might provide some new opportunities to explore with your students. The most challenging step for you is the transition, but if you are interested please let me know and I would be happy to help.

11/26-11/30 Weekly Update

Thanksgiving Fun

Please enjoy this short snippet for some pointers for how to cook your turkey next week.

Kids Inc. and Culminations

I just want to let you know that Walter and the Kids Inc. crew have been really gracious and flexible about working around our culmination needs (and lots of other needs).  Technically they have the gym until 6:00 pm as part of a partnership with BP&R and the district, so please go out your way to thank them for making it work for us. Anything we can do on our end to make it easier is very much appreciated.   For future planning, please know they have quite a few children (>80 on some days) under their care until 5:00. After that time the number drops significantly but typically they have a handful of students until 6:00.

Principal Shadow Day

On Friday 11/30 we will have a visitor from the Education Foundation shadowing me for the morning.  Our basic plan will be to walk all the classrooms and join the students at recess at 10:30, however if you have something specific for him to do with your class please let me know.  Our assigned honorary visitor is Kevin Rea, of Pedego Bikes.

First Aid

We have fallen below our required ratio of updated first aid card holders.  Please respond to the following survey to let me know how we should address this.  If we opt to schedule an SIW time, then we would need to identify another SIW to “trade back” the time, since we would be required to stay late to get the 4 hour training in; so we would stay late for one SIW but leave early for another.

Quick Survey

School Hours – School hours have been decided for next year.

  • Elementary will be 8:00-2:30 (8:00-1:00 on Wednesdays)
  • Middle School will be 8:45- 3:40
  • High School will be 8:45-3:45

The District Lead Together team is currently working on a process to collect input in order to determine work hours for our employees.

11/12-11/16 Weekly Update

Friday 11/9

I am heading to Boise for Mason’s regional XC meet.  Lorin will hold down the fort! I hate missing a day, especially an assembly day, but you are in good hands and family comes first – thank you for your understanding.

Morning Meeting Update

“I can’t wait for our staff meeting on the Tuesday morning after a long-weekend.”  said nobody ever! Staff Meeting on Tuesday 11/13 is canceled; next week you can start your week doing what you need to do teach your class rather than sitting in a meeting.  Next staff meeting is Tuesday 12/4.

Culminations….WHAT?!?!!? How is already time for culminations?

Good luck, try to relax and enjoy and remember there’s no such thing a perfect culmination.  You’ve done great work with your students and it shows.

SIW Update

We are going to use Wednesday 12/12 for Design Team Meetings.  Most SIWs should be labeled for our purposes on the calendar between now and winter break.

11/5-11/9 Weekly Update

Math Talks and Number Sense

Thank you for your work this week on Number Talks.  That was certainly not the easiest day to buckle down and stay in character and you did it very well.  I did send a thank you note to Kerry on our behalf as I really appreciate her expertise and preparation.

I am re-sharing a great resource for math thinking and learning.   YouCubed  The following statement is really powerful regarding our approach to students who appear to be struggling.  Often what we want to provide (remediation, formulaic route memorization) in the name of support, can often exacerbate  the problem for students.

  • After extensive study of the different strategies the students used the researchers concluded that the difference between high and low achieving students was not that the low achieving students knew less mathematics, but that they were interacting with mathematics differently. Instead of approaching numbers with flexibility and using ‘number sense’ they seemed to cling to formal procedures they had learned, using them very precisely, not abandoning them even when it made sense to do so. The low achievers did not know less but they did not use numbers flexibly – probably because they had been set on the wrong path, from an early age, of trying to memorize methods and number facts instead of interacting with numbers flexibly (Boaler, 2009).

There is a 3-minute video on the page linked below that provides a really good explanation of Number Sense and you can see how using Number Talks can strengthen this for all students.

Number Sense Video

Also on the YouCubed site there is a great page on Assessment & Grading.  We (I am part of this guilty party) put so much emphasis on testing, grades and homework, yet math success can be assessed in so many more ways.  I think because the vast majority of our students do so well on assessments we assume there is something wrong with the student who does not perform well rather than assume something might be wrong with the assessment for that particular student.  What if we challenged that paradigm?

To be clear, I am not and would not advocate for any large sweeping changes to our program or instructional practices.  According to our Fall easy CBM, 85% of our 5th grade students started the year in the green zone above the 72nd percentile (most schools are ecstatic if they reach this by the end of the year).  According to our 2018 SBAC scores 89% of our 3rd, 4th, & 5th grade students tested at or above state standards. (This is twice the Oregon average.) There is no evidence our population lacks number sense or any major mathematical set of skills and knowledge; therefore we should only be allowing ourselves to make tweaks and small changes, here and there, to our instruction.  For the few students who continue to struggle, according to assessments we give them, we should consider designing alternatives to assess the knowledge they have rather than test what they don’t know. It’s not an easy challenge, but you are one of the most creative and dedicated group of educators on the planet and I believe we are best positioned to make this happen.

DHS Forms-Apparently, DHS will no longer be accepting faxed copies of report forms. I don’t know the reasoning for this decision. Please share this with staff and please continue to send a copy to the Ed. Center and keep one for your records. For now, no copies to DHS until we learn more.

Education Foundation Grants- SAVE THE DATE!  The Education Foundation for Bend-La Pine Schools announces the Classroom Grants timeline for K-12 educators for the 2019-2020 academic year.  The grant process will open Monday, February 18, 2019 with a link to the online application form.  Grant applications must be submitted no later than Friday, March 22, 2019.  The grant application process is open to all educators in Bend, La Pine and Sunriver.  Once determinations are made, funded grants will be awarded in May 2019. All educators will be sent additional communication with in December and January and the online link in February.  Questions can be directed to Angie Cole, Allocations Committee Chair at:  [email protected] or (541) 318-3794  OR Michelle Johnson, Executive Director, Education Foundation at: [email protected] or (541) 355-5660.  Requests for STEM, art, music & wellness projects will be accepted during the dates indicated and must complete all necessary forms for consideration.  In the 2018-2019 academic year, the Education Foundation funded over $89,000 in classroom grants — it’s highest award in 30 years of service to the K-12 educational community.  To learn more, visit www.engagedminds.org

I want to draw your attention to our District Equity Policy.  Please take a few moments to read this document and think about ways we can make these statements more than words on paper.  What are the everyday things we do to promote equity? What are everyday things or behaviors that serve as barriers to equity?

10/29-11/2 Weekly Update

Parent-Teacher Conferences

Thank you for the time and effort you put into preparing for conferences this week.  Hopefully you were able to enjoy a little more time compared to previous years for prep.  While the majority of your conferences are probably pretty easy-going, natural conversations with parents, there are always a few here and there that can be tricky so please know that I understand that challenge and I am appreciative of how you handle it with grace.  The extra day is probably not nearly enough to compensate but I will wish you a restful and restorative 3-day weekend to recuperate. Smile often and make excuses to laugh at every opportunity, even if it means watching funny youtube videos or a silly sitcom. Laughter is a powerful cure and smiling will directly impact your current state of mind.

THANK YOU

I want to say a quick but sincere thank you to Brad, Tim, Scott and Rob.  Thanks to their hard work we have several sets of shelves assembled in our storage areas of the gym.  The shelves are 200 lbs each so it was not an easy task to get them unloaded and assembled. The spaces-saving of these shelving units will be extremely valuable for our storage needs.  We still have a ways to go before these rooms will be fully functional but this week marks some significant progress. We also have our chair racks assembled and half of those chairs assembled and racked.

District Equity Policy

I want to draw your attention to our District Equity Policy.  Please take a few moments to read this document and think about ways we can make these statements more than words on paper.  What are the everyday things we do to promote equity? What are everyday things or behaviors that serve as barriers to equity?

Apple TVs

I have a solution in hand (or in my office)!  Now it will take me a little while to get them installed but I hope to get this done myself in the next week or so.  Thanks for your patience.

Mandatory Standard Protocol Response Training

Jimmy Krauger (SRO) will be here on Tuesday 10/30 for our SRP training.  This is a mandatory training for all staff.  We will start at 8:00 in the library.  Please observe one of our first staff agreements and be on time (on time is defined as in your seat ready to begin).  Although we usually start our morning meetings at 8:05, we will need to start right at 8:00 since we have a guest speaker and we are required to have the full time for the training.

Fire Drill

This has been the month of drills, but we are not done.  We still need a fire drill for October so we will do this on Monday afternoon.  I will give a quick heads up with the PA and then we will pull the alarm. This would be a great time to go ahead and use an alternate route for your class if it makes sense for your evacuation, just be sure to have a gate key ready to use.

PTO Release Days

As you should already know we did increase the amount of PTO funding for release days for grade levels.  The spirit of this funding is to provide the time for teams to collaborate on storylines and this needs to be a priority for us all, however there are sometimes request to use these individually.  Since we did add a day to each grade level, I feel it would be reasonable to leave the decision to your teams to use that third day as an individual versus a full team release time. I also want to stress that we really need to work on spacing these days out to help with the number of needed subs each time.  Let’s try to put all these release days on the google calendar to make it visible and easy to work around.

COSA Presentation

While we were not pleased with the turnout, we were really pleased with our presentation and you should all be proud of our presenting team – they did a great job representing our community.  It’s safe to say we agree this was a great first step…we are not entirely certain where these steps will take us, but the possibility and potential is exciting. Sharing Storyline expertise with others not only benefits others, it benefits us as it is a form of reciprocal teaching.  One of the most important objectives of my job is to promote and develop leadership which enhances the experience we provide for our students. Any and every opportunity I have to push you or support you in this area is an easy decision for me. Whenever that objective can line up with promoting Storyline outside of our own community, that seems like a no-brainer.

While we are on this topic, I want to explain the timing.  There was a call for presenters at the annual principals’ conference in the spring (May).  I felt pretty strongly that we should promote Storyline at this conference and after a brief conversation with JJ I submitted a proposal for our Mars Team to present and I shared this at a leadership meeting on May 25th.  Shortly after submitting the application school ended and we all went our separate ways for summer. Although summer felt like a blink of an eye, when we returned to school in August we received confirmation that our proposal had been accepted it still seemed like it crashed on us suddenly.  I shared the acceptance with JJ and after we exchanged a nervous laughter, we started the prep for the presentation. We knew the timing would be challenging but we felt strongly that we should make it happen. If this caught anyone off-guard, I do apologize but I hope everyone is able to recognize the intentions.

SBAC Data

The following was shared with principals on Friday afternoon from Gary Timms, so I wanted to pass it along to you as well;

SBAC Opt Outs- First off, I wanted to thank you all for your efforts around stemming the tide of SBAC opt outs last year. We had a couple schools make a significant difference with a few intentional efforts. As a result, elementary still had over 90% of our students participating last year. This year we want to continue to encourage participation. With that in mind, please use this Smarter Balanced FAQ  any way you like to help inform parents of the importance of the tests for our schools.

More Smarter Balanced- I know that SBAC and other testing data is not the end all be all for our schools. At the same time, they are a measure of the work we are doing and one substantial indicator of how well our students are learning the standards. In addition, test data is what is shared with the world via ODE and the press. ODE report cards will soon be released. I had a chance to view them all this week and what I saw was extremely encouraging for all of us. Here are a few highlights:

  • 17/18 schools equaled or improved % of students passing ELA.
  • 17/18 schools were above the state average in ELA.
  • 13/18 schools equaled or improved % of students passing math.
  • 16/18 schools were above the state average in math.
  • A new graphic places schools at either LOW, AVG. or HIGH on individual student growth based on growth percentiles. 9/18 schools were rated HIGH on student growth while 7 others were AVERAGE and only 2 rated LOW.
  • 15/18 schools equaled or improved % of students passing Science.
  • 15/18 schools were above the state average in Science.
  • 65.3% of elementary students passed the ELA. This is our highest ever and 3.2% higher than last year. The state average increased less than half as much.
  • 58.7% of elementary students passed the math. This is our highest ever and 1.6% higher than last year. The state average increased less than half as much.
  • In addition, most schools are outperforming their comparison schools’ average in most grades in both math and reading.

Overall, the SBAC data is very encouraging and reflects the efforts you are making every day. Keep up the great work!!

10/15-10/19 Weekly Update

Thank you

I want to express a heart-felt thank you for a great birthday this past week.  I was “warned” that Highland is s special place to be for a birthday and once again that rang true.

Digital Citizenship Week – Message from Christie Boen

As many of you may know, October 15-19 is Digital Citizenship Week. This year, we are hoping for 99.9% classroom participation! We’ve tried to make lessons as easy as possible for teachers to implement in the classroom with your students. Our hope is that these lessons lead to rich, meaningful conversations about digital citizenship and how it affects students’ daily lives.

Here is the link to the Digital Citizenship Table with the lessons we have used in previous years. Let us know if there are other resources that you have had success with.

Thanks!

Leadership Meeting

This Friday will be a good time for a leadership meeting from 8:05 to 8:45 in my office.  One change I would like to suggest for Leadership is to share the responsibility with your team and split up the meetings between your team members.  Our objective is to address school-wide issues and concerns and the purpose of these meetings is to be a problem-solving team so please come with solutions.  Please talk with your team to determine who will attend and email me the issue or concern for our agenda by Wednesday afternoon.

Building Blocks – FINALLY!!

We were finally able to introduce the building blocks today after a 6 month ordeal!  These blocks were purchased by the PTO back in February however due to a manufacturing problem they did not arrive until after the school year ended.  I’ve been waiting for our turn to get Michael (the kindest painter I have ever met) to come back here to do the work and we now have a builder area designated.

The two rules I am sharing with students;

  1. Blocks stay in the builder area.
  2. Blocks are for building only (not lightsabers, swords, axes, etc.)

10/8-10/12 Weekly Update

Inspiration

My source of inspiration this week comes from our Mindful Educators course; stop and pay attention.  The leaves are turning colors.  The temperature is changing. The days are shortening.  The sunrises and sunsets with some clouds are spectacular.  The environment around you has so much beauty, so take the time to soak it in.

There are two ways to live your life: One is as though nothing is a miracle, the other is as though everything is a miracle.

20% EBISS Day Recap

Thank you everyone for making our new EBISS day schedule work.  I am sure we can make some tweaks here and there to make it run more smoothly, but for our first run I think we all deserve some kudos.  If you see a part of the schedule we can do differently to gain some efficiency or improve in any way, please let me know. Some general feedback for all groups; I tried to pay close attention to the amount of time we spent talking about students in the red zone versus students other zones.

SLGGs, Minis, Evaluations

As I mentioned in an earlier update, the requirements in this area are remaining similar to last year.  3 min-observations for teachers in off year and 6 mini-observations for teachers in evaluation year.   Everyone does SLGGs.

Linked below is our typical SLGG form used over the past couple years;

SLGG Form

If you plan to write your own goals, the following form can be use;

SLGG Template

Linked below is a quality checklist that can be used to help create the goals.

SLGG Quality Checklist

Deadline: Your completed SLGG forms are due to me by Friday 10/19.  The consequence for missing this deadline will be a public Fortnite Dance at the Fall Festival….OK not really, but that would be pretty funny!

SRO Training

Just a heads up.  I submitted the following three dates for our bi-annual mandatory Standard Protocol Response training with our School Resource Officer, Jim Krueger.  I will let you know when the final date is confirmed but this is a meeting I would like all staff to attend so please put this on your radar.

  • 10/30 – 8:00-8:50
  • 11/30 – 8:00-8:50
  • 12/4 – 8:00-8:50

Safe TOUCH

I need to get moving with our Safe TOUCH lessons soon.  I will hold a parent information night on; Tuesday 10/16 5:00-6:00pm.  After that I can get started on the lessons for each classes.

4 lessons, 30 minutes each.  Ideally these are 4 consecutive days, but we can be flexible if necessary.

Academic Excellence

Thank you for a thoughtful and productive afternoon spent on math on Wednesday.  I really appreciate your openness to sharing and pushing your own limits. Your “look fors” will be great conversation pieces for our mini follow up conversations.  I’ll do my best to capture these form the observer-perspective and share them back with you,

TAG Update

Although I have not yet received the official list from the district, I wanted to provide this list sooner rather than later to allow you time to be prepared for conferences.  Linked below you will find an updated list for students already identified for TAG, in the process of being identified, as well as students are likely to be identified since they scored in the 97th percentile or higher for SBAC in Spring.

2018-2019 TAG List (and potential TAG)

For students who scored in the 97th %ile or better in both ELA and Math, I have already started the identification process and we should receive their purple folders soon.  For students, who have one score in the 97th or higher, we should now seek out the second piece of evidence for their identification. Ideally this will be in the form of a teacher referral (linked below).  Please see me if you have questions about this process.

TAG Teacher Referral

If you ever have a parent request testing for TAG, please be sure to let me know immediately.  Just as a reminder, our district primarily uses the following assessments for TAG identification;

  • SBAC ELA & Math (All 3rd through 5th graders) – these test for academic talent
  • Naglieri (All 2nd graders & new students to BLP schools) – these test for intellectual ability – This test will be administered early spring.
  • SAT-10 (This is an additional test available upon request.  Format is similar to the SBAC test and requires a fair amount of time to administer.)

Basic TAG Message to parents (What we do for TAG identified students.)

“We differentiate to meet the rate and level of all students in the classroom using available curriculum resources, in addition to the open-ended environment of Storyline.”

TAG Parent Letter

I’ve also linked one of the district PEP forms below.  If you would prefer a different PEP form, please let me know, as there are several from which to choose.
