Are you interested in fine-tuning your Foundational Skills Lessons? Nick, our implementation specialist from Really Great Reading will be here in Bend on April 20th.  He would love to work alongside you during your foundational skills block and problem solve with you.  If you are interested, fill out this form.

Literacy Happenings

1. Decodable Workgroup members wanted: kindergarten, 1st grade teachers, and interventionists
Please sign up here (before April 12th) if you are interested in joining a decodable workgroup to look through decodables to find ones that align (as well as possible) to Really Great Reading.

See information below.

  • When: May 9th: either a ½ day or full day sub release
  • Where: Education Center downtown room 203
  • What to expect: Use a rubric to look through samples of decodables

This will be a small group and if I get a lot of applicants, I’ll pull names from a hat and notify everyone by April 14th. If you have any questions, please contact Lindsley Gehrig.

2. Kindergarten teachers: feedback for beginning of year scope and sequence
Looking for feedback on kindergarten’s beginning of the year scope and sequence for foundational skills, handwriting, and Units of Study writing. Now that we have most of a year under our belts, how do you want the beginning of next year to run? I plan to make recommended scope and sequences (like the good ole’ days pre COVID) and want to hear from the experts (that’s YOU).

Please fill this out and let me know what you think.

I am not making this anonymous because I may want to follow up with folks to understand your perspective, clarify, and/or run the new scope and sequence past you once completed.

3. What do I do if I complete all the Really Great Reading lessons before the end of the year?

4. Do you want to add more indigenous authored texts into your read alouds but not sure where to start?

5. Opportunities to explore the final three ELA curriculums!Check out digital access here including sites/times to see materials for both 1st and 4th grades.

Math Happenings

Wondering about Procedural Fluency? The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics just released a position paper making key recommendations.

Oregon Council of Teachers of Mathematics will once again host Oregon Math Leaders. It will return to Linfield College July 20-22.  Registration, meals, and lodging is free if you present.  Here is information about presenting. If you don’t want to present, but want to attend, registration will open soon.  Reach out to Kerry Morton if you have any questions.

Supporting English Learners

With conferences coming up, below is some helpful information for working with interpreters:

  • Arrange the seating so that the interpreter is close and can hear all participants
  • Introduce everyone, including the interpreter
  • Use short sentences and pause often for interpretation
  • Avoid technical terms and educational jargon
  • Maintain eye contact with the family rather than the interpreter
  • Remember that everything has to be said twice, which cuts down on the amount of time you have to share with the family; double block the conference appointment if possible

Science

The Bend Science Station developed enhanced & streamlined Amplify Units for Bend LaPine Schools. If you were not able to attend one of the January or February trainings about these resources, here is how you access the links to access the lessons and activities! You will need to use the passcode, below to access the materials housed on the Bend Science Station Website.  You can also check out a variety of science equipment from their lending library using this passcode! For Kinder and 1st grade teachers, there are no enhanced Amplify units for your grade level; however, there are some very cool POP science units that are so fun to teach! The links to these units are below as well.
