ilc Digital Practice Lessons
Introduce students to the digital tools available in the ilc platform by using these digital practice lessons. In Grade-Level Tools in ilc, you will find a teacher guided practice lesson K-5 and a K-2 or 3-5 practice lesson students can complete independently in the ilc platform. Open Clever > ilc > select your grade level > select “Grade _: Toolkit”. Digital assignments and assessments in the ilc platform for EL provide an opportunity for students to practice their typing skills, familiarity with digital platforms, text-to-speech, and ease of formative assessment grading. Reach out to your instructional coach with any questions or areas for support.
EL Audiobook Project- We have had a team of amazing educators working to record some of the required texts and assignments in EL for students who may need the additional support of an audio recording. Your students will be able to access the audio recordings in Clever. Here are the directions and here is a screen recording. We will add additional recordings as our team continues to record.
Here are some best practices to consider:
To ensure students are grappling with complex texts while using audiobooks, it’s essential to pair the audio experience with the print version of the text. Encourage students to actively engage with the material by taking notes, annotating, and discussing key themes and vocabulary as they listen, fostering deeper comprehension and critical thinking skills.
Strategies for Analyzing Complex Texts with Audiobooks
- Text Annotation: Encourage students to annotate the print version of the text while listening to the audiobook. They can underline key ideas, make notes in the margins, and highlight unfamiliar vocabulary to enhance their understanding.
- Guided Listening Questions: Provide students with specific questions to consider while listening. This can help them focus on important themes, character development, and plot structure, facilitating deeper analysis.
- Think-Pair-Share: After listening to a section of the audiobook, have students discuss their thoughts and insights with a partner before sharing with the larger group. This collaborative approach allows for diverse perspectives and promotes critical thinking.
- Graphic Organizers: Use graphic organizers to help students visually map out elements of the text, such as character relationships, plot points, and themes. This can make complex information more digestible.
- Reflection Journals: Have students keep reflection journals where they can write about their thoughts on the text after listening. This encourages personal connection and deeper engagement with the material.
By implementing these strategies, you can create a supportive environment that fosters critical analysis of complex texts while utilizing audiobooks as a valuable resource.
