Need the scoop on PBIS?  Check out the new PBIS bulletin board outside of the Staff Room.  Lots of great information!

Carole’s SIOP Tip of the Week-Comprehensible input

Speech appropriate for students’ proficiency level (slower rate of speech, enunciation, and simple sentence structure for beginners). Have you ever tried to learn a new language?  What does it feel like when the speech in another language is coming at you too quickly?  Dawnelle shared that in her Spanish class last month the instructor did an activity where the speech was too rapid in Spanish.  The group had difficulty with the pace of the new language they were learning.  It is a challenge for all of us when we are learning a second language or any new topic that we have not mastered before. Nice job taking Spanish, Dawnelle!

Students who are at beginning and early intermediate levels of English proficiency benefit from teachers who slow down their rate of speech and use pauses. This is also true for struggling students who do not have background knowledge in a new topic.  As students become more proficient, they are able to handle a faster pace and more complex sentence structure.

Think of this also during conversations with parents. The parents who are able to speak English will be able to understand a normal rate of speech.  The parents who do not speak English will need slower speech and frequent pauses.  You do not need to speak louder,😊just slower.

Finishing touches on the 5th grade program.   They sound great!

Today, 3rd-5th grade families will receive this letter and the state opt out form.   A similar letter is being sent to families at all Bend-La Pine Schools with the goal of increasing participation rates on the SBAC.

Let’s celebrate…90%+ class average on a recent unit test for this group of mathematicians.
