Happy New Year! I hope your week has been great!

With the number of language impoverished students we serve at Lava Ridge, I have asked Carole to share strategies and ideas with me on how we can best make sure we are meeting the learning needs of these students. Here is Carole’s tip of the week!
Content objectives are clearly defined, displayed and reviewed. In effective instruction, concrete content objectives that identify what students should know and be able to do guide teaching and learning. Using student friendly language helps students to understand what they will be learning. (The SIOP model 2008 page 24) Writing down the objectives and reviewing them together helps ELL’s and struggling students to understand what they will be learning. Sometimes we have to adapt the language. I had to do this today after teaching my first group. I had to rewrite the objective so it was clearer for students. The questions I ask myself are, “Do they understand what they are learning? Do they understand what they will do with this learning?”
