COSA Fall Principals ConferenceInfo from Lora on a great opportunity:

A Professional Learning Opportunity You Won’t Want to Miss!

Mary Ehrenworth, deputy director of the Reading and Writing Project at Teachers College, and a co-author of the Units of Study for Teaching Writing, will be leading a workshop for Bend-La Pine teachers/administrators on Monday, October 24th, from 1:30-4:00 PM at the Riverhouse.  If you’ve never had the privilege of hearing Mary present, she is a compelling advocate for best practices in the teaching of writing and reading and obviously an expert on our instructional materials for writing.

Because this is such a valuable opportunity for our staff, the district is covering all the workshop expenses. Sites need only be responsible for half-day subs for any staff attending. We have a limit on attendance, so below I’ve listed the MAXIMUM number of slots per site. These slots include both teacher and/or administrator attendees (and I strongly encourage administrators to attend with their team).

Click here to access further information including how many slots your school was allotted.

Monday Leadership- Monday is a Leadership meeting at the Ed. Center, beginning at 3:15 . We’ll be getting into groups for discussion and future school visits. Below are the groupings we’ll be using for Monday and your visits. Feel free to find and sit with this team when you arrive.

Bear Creek, Buckingham, La Pine

Elk Meadow, Juniper, Westside Village

Silver Rail, Rosland, Lava Ridge

Jewell, High Lakes, Amity

Three Rivers, Miller, Ponderosa

Pine Ridge, Ensworth, Highland

Connect Ed Letter- Julie Walker asked that I share this with all principals.

Oregon SB 856: Erin’s Law-  As some of you know, Oregon passed SB 856 last year. This legislation, enacted in many states across the country, is known as “Erin’s Law,” and it focuses on child sex abuse prevention.

The law has fairly stringent requirements beyond what previously existed in our health education standards, including annual instruction for all grade levels. A team of district staff looked at the requirements this summer and made plans for the best way to address them at each level.

Tim Burdsall has taken the lead at the elementary level, and he will provide a Safe Touch Training on Wednesday, October 19th, from 8:00-noon at Silver Rail Elementary. This training will include all the necessary materials, including parent notification letters, etc., as well as a checklist for planning.

Because of the legislation, it is mandatory for each elementary school to send ONE representative to this training. Ideally, this will be the person primarily responsible for the instruction or a person who is comfortable training others from his/her site on the topic. If you need a substitute for this individual, the district will cover the cost. Please have your representative sign up on PD Place, so there is documentation of attendance.

Math SIW-

Bridges Educator Site licenses – We exceeded the limit of licenses for the Bridges Educator Site. If you registered for an account on the Bridges website, we had to delete it. If you need access, you can use my account:

Forefront update – It should be good to go for all grade levels: k-5! Try it out with just one teacher before introducing it to the whole staff. Everyone will need to log-in using their @gapps.bend.k12.or.us account. Please have teachers complete the “Walk Through” it will make everything much more clear. I created a presentation to help you present it to your staff: https://drive.google.com/open?id=13yFUJIojX8N1oa-y73fPOsUOK1lBa975bVNC7vOjzUY Jewell Elementary went through the process this week and found it very easy to use.

Draft of October District  SIW optionsAttached is a draft of the options for the October 12th SIW. The options and locations may change before they go live on PD Place on October 5th. Teachers will need to sign-up through PD Place by October 11th. A number of teachers just showed up to SIWs without registering in PD Place. This creates additional work for Stephanie Bent when she is verifying attendance, so please remind them to sign-up and sign-in!

Future SIWs November-April – Starting in November teachers will only travel every other District School Improvement Wednesday. The options will include both mathematics and English Language Arts. The District School Improvement Wednesdays that teachers don’t travel will be spent at buildings planning for mathematics. There will be more information regarding those coming soon.

A Schools – Nov., Jan., March-Lava Ridge, Jewell, Silver Rail, Buckingham, High Lakes, Pine Ridge, Elk Meadow, Highland
B Schools – Dec. February, April- Bear Creek, Ponderosa, Three Rivers, La Pine, Rosland, Ensworth, Juniper, Miller, Amity

Nursing Services/ Field Trips- Two reminders/heads-up from Tami Pike that related to field trips with students who require direct care nursing services.  Here are Tami’s instructions:

When field trips are scheduled with parental volunteer transport (or bus), students requiring emergency medication (Epi-Pen, Glucagon, inhalers) need to ride with a Bend-La Pine staff person who has been trained by a school nurse on medication administration. If the staff person (teacher) does not have a type 10 license to transport students, the staff person and the student must ride in a vehicle together along with the driver (parent volunteer). If there is not enough room to accommodate all of the students and the medication administration trained staff person, a bus transport will need to be requested.

*Epi pen and Glucagon trained staff need to be CPR/first aid certified.

**Please remind your staff that if direct care nursing services are required for field trips, we ask that a 2 week advance notice via direct care nursing request form is completed.

Emergency Protocol Training- Friendly reminder that annual Emergency Protocol Training (EPT) needs to be completed prior to December 31st, 2016. Please coordinate with your school SRO, Julianne Repman, or Scott Bojanowski to set up a training date for your staff. The Emergency Protocol Training focuses on “All Hazards Training” to include discussion on identifying hazards and re-fresher training on protocols and guidelines for: fire drills, room clear, evacuation, reverse evacuation, shelter, Lock Out, Lock Down, and earthquake drills.

Gallup- Gallup student poll for fifth graders is open through October 28. Dave has sent out information, but don’t hesitate to call Dave or me if you have any questions.

Conference Reminder- Please remember to get conference interpreter requests to Jody McBride by October 12.

I know there is more, but I am sure I have already exceeded my word quota for the week and in all probability, you stopped reading a while ago, so I’ll share anything else next week. Have a great weekend. See you Monday.
