August 16

Enrollment Update- As of this afternoon, we are around 200 under projection at elementary. 262 of that is in kindergarten. If we get to kinder projections, we will exceed overall projections. If/when that happens, we may be able to talk hiring (there are K-12 number to consider as well). Until then, we are working on how we might address hot spots with transfers either within a building or from building to building. Again, trying to figure out how long to hold the cards before making a move. Will keep you posted. Call with any questions. Thanks for your patience.

Safety setting up a class- Please share this info sheet with staff. Thanks!

From Lora: Team:

While the Bend-area Jewish community is not large, we have a significant number of Jewish families in our school district. We were contacted last year by a local rabbi, asking us to avoid scheduling family events on their holiest of holidays. These are Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. For 2019, these are the dates these holidays fall:

  • Rosh Hashanah-sunset Sunday, 9/29-sundown Tuesday, 10/1
  • Yom Kippur-sunset Tuesday, 10/8-sundown Wednesday, 10/9

Please note that these dates do not mean school activities need to come to a standstill, but please avoid scheduling events such as open houses, curriculum nights, etc.

 Thanks!

Certified Work Calendar- the certified back to school work calendar should be used to plan your back to school week activities.

QPR Training- As part of our district suicide prevention plan, each secondary school staff receives QPR training every 3 years.  QPR stands for Question, Persuade, and Refer — the 3 simple steps anyone can learn to help save a life from suicide.  Just as people trained in CPR and the Heimlich Maneuver help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. Each year thousands of Americans, like you, are saying “Yes” to saving the life of a friend, colleague, sibling, or neighbor.

Moving forward, we are now moving elementary schools into the training cycle.  For this year, the elementary schools listed below are scheduled to receive the QPR training.  Sean took the liberty to join some smaller schools together.  All training take place during a school improvement Wednesday time.  If you are on the list below, please use this link  to sign your school up for this year’s training.  If you are scheduled to participate with a partner school, please co-plan the date and location. If you are not on the list, your staff will be trained next year or the year after.

The List- Amity/Highland (together), Bear Creek, Buckingham, Elk Meadow, Ensworth/Juniper (together), High Lakes, La Pine/Rosland (together), Jewell, Lava Ridge.

Elementary Retreat- Reminder- We will have our annual August horizontal meeting on Friday, August 23 from 8:30-noon at Three Rivers. Thanks for hosting, Tim! We will start with a light breakfast and coffee- so don’t get up early to eat. We will have an optional no host lunch for those who want to join us after the meeting. Sorry about the Friday thing, but all the other days kept getting taken.

Please send me a picture of yourself during a highlight from your summer with a one (or two) sentence description of what you did. I would like this by Monday, August 19. Thanks to those of you who have already done so!

Please remember that I am out tomorrow, Friday and Monday. I will be back on Tuesday, then out again on Wednesday. I can be reached by cell and I will be checking emails. You also know who to contact at the ed center should you need something more urgently.
