This and That:

Go Fund Me: One of our students suffered the loss of a parent during the break. Follow this link for an opportunity to donate if you are inclined.

February 3 Grading Day (From Skip): Some administrators have reached out asking if staff can work from home on the end-of-term workday on February 3rd. For a number of reasons, it’s the district’s expectation that all staff report to their sites on all workdays (with the exception of the last workday in June this year): First, this time is designed for teachers to not only complete grading, but plan for the weeks and months ahead; if they have time-they may want to confer with colleagues as a part of that work. Second, if there are glitches with anything related to report cards and/or grading, it’s easy to find staff. (**Note from Kelle – please see me if you have special circumstances.**)

Eagle Engagement Team (EET): As I have shared a couple of times this year, we have a pretty great parent team working hard to re-establish our parent organization. With input from our families, the new name of the team will be the Eagle Engagement Team (EET) instead of PTO. Here is a link to a letter that was sent home this week. You can expect more information from the team throughout the remainder of this year.

Winter EBISS: Similar to the Fall, our winter EBISS meetings will take place on Wednesdays during class time for 2 hours. You should have received an invite with your day and schedule on Friday. Please let Kelle know if you have any questions.

NNAT3: During the week of March 13-17, all 2nd-grade students will take the NNAT assessment as a screener for TAG. During the week of March 20-24, there will be make-up sessions for grade 2, and all new students in grades 3-5 will be assessed. Frank will work with teachers to communicate the exact time and location. A family notification about the assessment will be sent home so you may hear from parents wanting to have their child tested.  Please talk with Frank if you have questions, and you are welcome to pass any inquiries on to Frank.

UKG: FYI… Plans for the Business Department’s Time & Leave module and HR’s Recruitment/HRIS module remain on track for a February 13th go-live launch.

SIW: This Wednesday will be a “B” week for our specialist schedule. The SIW this Wednesday is “Educator Network Day.” Please be sure you know where you are supposed to be on this day for your specific role.

Monday Staff Meeting Agenda: Our agenda this week includes: Language Arts adoption core beliefs, Really Great Reading assessments (MOP/ MOY), report cards, and Erin’s Law/ Menstrual Dignity Act/ Sexuality Education.

Focus on Excellence and Equity:

BLS Latino Family Night (From Kinsey): Flyer with details here. BLS has emailed this to families, posted it on the Spanish FB page, and a limited number of paper copies have been distributed. Teachers of our multilingual students… please consider sharing this in your newsletter or otherwise help promote it. Please also consider attending—a great opportunity to deepen relationships and trust with our families! **Note from Kelle – we will also be sharing in our family newsletter.**

Asian Family Night (From Kinsey):  Flyer with details here.  Teachers… please consider sharing this in your newsletter or with families that might be interested. Please also consider attending—a great opportunity to deepen relationships and trust with our families! **Note from Kelle – we will also share in our family newsletter.**

Alliance (From Kinsey): DO NOT SHARE THIS ONE BROADLY. PLEASE ONLY SHARE WITH SPECIFIC FAMILIES AS APPROPRIATE.  This (draft still!) is a youth and adult collective for LGBT student success.  This is mostly an FYI for you—you are welcome if interested, but please do not share this info broadly.  If you have a particular student, staff member, or family who has been seeking support related to this topic, feel free to share it with them specifically.

Erin’s Law/Menstrual Dignity Act/ Sexuality Education Resources (From Kinsey): Wondering about how to thoughtfully and intentionally weave Erin’s Law requirements into your instruction?  Curious how you should approach classroom conversation about the Menstrual Dignity Act?  Want some support with the required portions of Sexuality Education for your grade level?  Check out these Do’s, Don’ts, and support resources:

Don’t:

  • Separate students by “boys” and “girls” for health instruction
  • Teach a “puberty talk” as a one-time lesson, separate from your health instruction

Do:

  • Use one of the approved supplemental resources for health instruction
  • Send home a family letter at least a week prior to particular lessons/conversations
  • Consider including the Menstrual Dignity Act resources in your lessons
  • Consider attending this optional paid training to learn more and plan together with health experts and coaches
  • Consider reaching out to a LEAD Coach for co-teaching or individual planning support

TLC Update: Here is a link to the 12/14 TLC Update. This is the same update as last week.

Safety Related Information:

Safety Drills: Between now and the end of the school year, we will only be sharing the date and AM/ PM of drills in order to make them more authentic and a better estimate of our preparedness. There are a few students that have a pre-drill warning written into their IEP or 504; we will let these teachers know approximately 10-20 minutes prior to the drill.

EME Safety Concern Form: Link here. You can use this form to report any safety concerns – big or small. Please use this form or talk directly with Frank or Kelle.

To Do:

Please consider signing up for a Bend Science Station Training: Announcing an exciting professional development opportunity at the Science Station! Over the past few years, they realigned the Amplify curriculum for grades 2-5 to make it manageable and relevant for Bend-La Pine teachers. In addition, they designed POP Science, which includes a short sequence of NGSS-aligned, hands-on science lessons for each grade level. This January, they will conduct teacher “refresher” trainings on 2nd-5th grade modified Amplify units and on K-1 POP Science lessons. These HANDS-ON workshops combine interactive instruction and time to collaborate with grade-level peers. You will practice and walk away with specific lessons for your classroom. Even if you’ve done these workshops before, we encourage you to participate again.

Sessions run from 3-6 pm and will take place at the Bend Science Station on the OSU-C campus. You will be compensated by the district at the curriculum rate for your time. In addition, the Science Station will be offering food and drinks. Click here for a list of the sessions and dates, then follow this link to up: Bend Science Station Amplify + POP Science Training – Google Sheets

Parent Volunteers: Before a volunteer can begin, you will need to get official confirmation from Nicole or Chris that the parent has passed the background check. Once they say yes, you will need to add them to this weekly google document letting us know who to expect each day.
