Staff Update: Week of 4-13-20

Update Your Weekly Schedule Links on RHS@Home

I have updated the Weekly Schedule document that is embedded on RHS@Home so it is ready for the week – please make sure your personal assignment and WebEx links are live and correct for the week.

  • Some of you use the RHS@Home site to link to your Google Classroom Stream page, others make the link go directly to the assignments for the day/week. I am not sure if one is better than the other… either way, please just make sure your links are working!
  • I have heard form a few students that they would prefer if you can post the assignments for the week at the beginning of the week rather than just one day at a time. That requires “getting ahead” of the students, and is not easy… just thought I’d share the feedback

Week 2 Student Survey Results

We don’t have a TON of responses yet, but those we have are really useful to look at! I encourage you to look at the pie charts to see overall trends, but to be honest, it is even MORE useful to take a look at individual kids’ responses where you can get some insight into WHO is struggling in your class – and then reach out!! Link to results in “forms mode” (you can see pie charts AND individual responses here). Link to results in “spreadsheet mode”. I will be pushing it out by email today to see if we can get other students to weigh in, especially those who are less engaged right now.

Some take aways so far:

  • Crew timing seems to be OK for most respondents thus far
  • Many students WOULD be interested in “WebEx Work Time”
  • The “time spent on school” pie is really interesting and seems to point to the fact that we are getting the “work load” pretty close to right… certainly not “way too heavy” so far

Staff Meetings This Week

8:30AM – 9:45AM Tuesday and Thursday in my room: https://bendk12.webex.com/meet/roger.white

Agenda Topics Include:

Teaching Team – digging into your observations/feedback on the table in our staff meeting agenda from last week and working to try and come up with solutions and innovations geared towards building connection and engagement. Also, taking a look at how to use grading practices here early on to do the same.

Support Team – continuing to work on and strategize on reaching out to struggling kids using our RHS@Home Student Tracker

Possible Schedule Ideas to Consider…. Geared to Build Connection & Engagement

I am thinking about building connection beyond Crew and wondering about a few ideas for your consideration:

  • Grade based “Optional Webex Work Sessions” – quite a few students expressed interest in this idea on the survey…?
  • Trying out live WebEx class 1x/week (say 30-40 minutes), recording it, and letting students know that if they attend, then their assignment is done for the day. Attendance+participation=completion. Students who don’t/can’t attend watch the recorded video asynchronously and then complete short comment/question/task back to you…?

We will check in on these ideas, and OTHER IDEAS you might have, during staff meetings this week!

New EL Education Supports For Virtual Learning!

EL is working hard and fact to keep us well supported! They have put together some pages with TONS of great resources!!!

The main page is HERE, and I have looked at the following sub pages so far:

Google Classroom “best practice” Reminders

  1. Please ARCHIVE all old classes ASAP so students don’t have to wade through that OLD content!
  2. Put a due date on all assignments that you want completed… even if there is no or less penalty for late work right now, we still want to communicate the intent of timeliness!
  3. Once we get into StudentVue grading, be SURE names in Classroom and on the assigned document match the names in Studentvue – otherwise it is hard to find assignments that are due or missing.
  4. If you are providing “optional; work” that is not required, please make that super clear so kids no what is required and due vs. what might be optional extensions
