QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Go as far as you can see; when you get there, you’ll be able to see further.”
~ Thomas Carlyle
TO DOS
- Consider reaching out with positive phone calls and emails to share with families a celebration or highlight from the first week. Consider working this into your prep or before/after school time. This supports connection for our students and families and promotes partnership and communication with our school.
- Insurance:
- Open enrollment is upon us, and as of today we have 1,130 employees who have not yet elected their benefits for the 2019-2020 school year. Open enrollment ends September 15th, which will fall on a Sunday this year. OEBB and Bend-La Pine will not be staffed over the final weekend to assist or answer questions. Please complete enrollment at their earliest convenience so that any technical difficulties or questions can be addressed ahead of the enrollment deadline.

CONTINUED CULTURE OF CARE PD
We’ll be adding some professional development devoted to our Collaborative Problem Solving work on a weekly basis. Here is the first entry from https://www.livesinthebalance.org/:
The journey starts with a close look at your beliefs about why a child is exhibiting challenging behavior. If some of the common cliches — attention-seeking, manipulative, coercive, unmotivated, limit-testing — have been coloring your view, you’re going to need some different lenses. And if you’ve been thinking that passive, permissive, inconsistent, non-contingent parenting is to blame, you’ll need to do some rethinking there too. Thanks to an enormous amount of research that’s been conducted over the past 50 years, we’ve learned a lot about behaviorally challenging kids. We’ve learned that what we’ve been saying about them (and doing to them) has often been counterproductive and ineffective. So, in this section, you’ll be asked to try on some new lenses — progressive lenses — so that you have a more accurate, compassionate understanding of challenging behavior and have a solid foundation for what comes next.
In the first video clip, you’ll learn the single most important theme of Dr. Greene’s model: Kids do well if they can. In other words, if a student could do well, he would do well…if the student had the skills to exhibit adaptive behavior, he wouldn’t be exhibiting challenging behavior. That’s because doing well is always preferable to not doing well. Watch Now

- Staff Initiated Schedule Changes
- Paul is creating a google form for staff to fill out when they are requesting that a student’s schedule be changed. He will review the request and forward approved changes to Gina. You will be able to access the Google Form in the Staff Google Classroom next week. We are considering schedule changes in unique circumstances from select staff; SRC, Life Skills, ELL, Counselors.
- At this time 99% of all student schedules are set.
- iPad update:
There has been concern that students are misinterpreting the message about iPads and insurance. We will be more clear in our communication with students that there will be a delay in delivering them an iPad as we wait for parents to notify us about insurance.
If a parent tells us that they can’t afford insurance, then we immediately give the students an iPad. If they tell us that they will pay it after their next pay period, we immediately issue them an iPad. If we haven’t had any communication from them, we delay issuing the iPad for a few days. This seems a reasonable response when so many students damage iPads without insurance and our HDMS budget has to absorb the costs. This results in less money for school supplies, professional development opportunities and other services that we provide teachers, staff, students and families.
The need for insurance is reinforced during Diamondback days and through other district/school communication. The dozen or so students who we are talking about are those who did not or could not attend our Diamondback days when this would have been handled in a face-to-face manner between adults. It is very unfortunate that students are being caught in the middle and emotionally upset about not having an iPad during the first few days of school.
In the end, we’ll never deny students access to an iPad but take some reasonable steps to ensure as many students who can afford insurance opt into it. As an administrative team, we’ll review our practices and make any changes next year to address this issue.
- Supporting whole school systems: Below is a list showing how we have tried to spread out which department gets assigned tasks that support all our students. Click here for a handout called 20 (Self-)Critical Things I will Do to Be a More Equitable Educator.
As we move into this school year, please read/re-read this handout, consider identifying one outcome, and then make a commitment to work on this outcome throughout the school year.
Make this commitment by simply sharing it with a colleague who can then hold you accountable. You can use the following sentence frame to get you started.
This year I working on…(insert one of the 20 things). Will you hold me accountable to this outcome by…?
