Here is the final say- Per ODE–Bluetooth headsets are allowed, as long as they maintain test security and ensure the validity of the student’s responses (e.g. no recording, playback, or broadcast capabilities, no internet access, etc.)

• The attendance team is preparing for our 2^nd team challenge.  Get ready for some smack talkin’ ATTENDANCE MADNESS.  We’ve created three brackets with single elimination competitions between classes.  Here are the brackets and we’ve grouped them by class size. We’ll explain more about this at Wednesday’s SIW and the competition will begin on Monday April 22^nd giving you enough time to trash talk your opponents.

• Paul and I are continuing to work on the master schedule for next year. We are using all the feedback we received from staff, looking at class sizes, ways to embed counseling curriculum as well as interventions and opportunities for all students.

• Staffing update: The Art position has closed. We are still in a holding pattern for the Math and ELA temp positions as the high school needs to reduce staff. We are unable to post these positions at this time because there is a chance a high school staff member will need to be placed into these positions.

• PD opportunity related to Equity:

There is a free 30 day, self-paced, on line course from Rachel Elizabeth Cargle.

The goal of this course is to become more self-aware, prepared to be an ally for people of color, and informed about other social justice topics.  The intent of this course it to push people (esp. white women) to an uncomfortable place with some of these topics.  She has received some strong feedback from the Bend community after speaking at Muse and TedxBend.  At this point, Lynne and Cathy have signed up and will be available if you want to talk through thoughts and feelings that may come up!  I support setting aside some SIW time for anyone who enrolls in this course to meet, discuss, and process.

• A Note from our Counseling Department regarding- Suicide Risk Assessment Protocol
  • Much like protocols on reporting concerns of child abuse and/or neglect, it is our responsibility to alert the properly trained professionals if we hear or see anything that indicates a student might be thinking about suicide or planning to end their life.
  • If you have concerns, you must share that information with the student’s grade level counselor immediately.  All comments and concerns need to be reported, even if the student says they are okay or that they were joking/didn’t mean it. School counselors have been trained in suicide prevention and assessment. There is a formal suicide risk screening process which must be followed. There are several steps that counseling staff must take once made aware of these concerns, so timeliness is of the utmost importance.

-Staff that indicated on the survey an interest in meeting with Admin regarding teaching assignments for next year have been emailed and scheduled to have those conversations.

Because we have not seen any demonstrable improvement of the students that we’ve discussed during Kid Time, we are going to hack how we structure Kid Time to see if we can produce greater improvement in student learning.  Here is a brief overview of what we’ll be trying. 

We’ll review the list of the 46 students who had 3 or more F’s during the first semester.  We’ll then ask each person to adopt 1 student for the second semester.  It could be a student that you have already informally adopted, a student from year’s past that you’d like to reconnect with or a student that you know from a non-academic setting.

We can then brainstorm what an adoption could look like bearing in mind that we don’t want to place a host of new responsibilities on your shoulders.  Our guess is that most everyone is already doing this in some shape or form but we can use Kid Time to put a little more definition around it.   

In the long run, if we can assist these students in improving the academic engagement, it’ll make all of our lives a lot easier and provide them with a richer future.

REMINDERS

-Safety Day slides have been updated with improvements/adjustments based on feedback we have received.  Please review on Google Classroom prior to instruction on Wednesday.

This week I wanted to share a video with you regarding “praising” students. The idea of fostering mindsets is not a new topic or one that you necessarily will find new learning from after watching this video, but I think it does a great job of reminding us what type of praise is most (and least) effective with students.

Just wanted to remind you that a training has been added to Performance Matters.  It is entitled Youth Mental Health 1st Aid and has been taught a few times in the past. In this course, participants will learn about the unique risk factors and warning signs of mental health problems in adolescents, build an understanding of the importance of early intervention, and given ideas of how to help an adolescent in crisis or experiencing a mental health challenge.

Some changes have been made to the Field Trip process. Please make sure you make yourself familiar with these changes. Here is the NEW Field Trip Permission Slip form. Please use this form for all trips, from now on.

Tardy Data:  Ten students were tardy four or more times from February 8th through February 14th.  There were 6 repeat offenders who will serve lunch detention and zero egregious tardies.

ICCL’s will be asking for your feedback around supplies needed for your content team. Our goal is to work toward a consistent “binder/notebook” system for all our HDMS students. Please use your common prep to brainstorm a list of supplies, so that when your Liaison reaches out to you, you already have that list for them!

The Education Foundation for Bend-La Pine Schools will open the 2019 Classroom Grants program on February 18, 2019. Educators may submit one grant but schools may submit several grants with principals indicating priority of requests. The online grant application and guidelines will be available at www.engagedminds.org beginning Feb. 18th. The program closes at 5pm on Friday, March 22, 2019. An email communicating this information to all BLS educators and staff will be distributed by the Superintendent’s office on February 19th.  Last year the Foundation awarded over $89,000 in innovative STEM, art, music & wellness grants!  Any questions? Intervention:  At the end of February we will be starting a 6th grade lunchtime academic intervention program to support fifteen 6th graders who are failing two or more academic classes.  The group will meet every Tuesday and Thursday during 6th grade lunch and receive academic support services from four 8th graders and one 7th grader.   Our tutors will be trained in AVID strategies by Brad to help make this intervention as efficient as possible. We may also be looking for one or two more tutors if you have any recommendations.  (Joe Albano is the point person)
