BITS AND BOBS

Here is some information regarding an essay contest sponsored by the American Legion. It is organized by grade levels and there is a cash prize for winners. Feel free to pass along as you see fit.

The Attendance Area Review Committee has completed its work and passed on their recommendation report to Shay for consideration and final decision. Shay will be making an announcement regarding elementary boundary changes for next year sometime on Jan. 29. Although these changes do not directly affect our students, it may be good to become familiar with the process and outcomes of this work as questions arise and as we prepare for a similar process to occur next fall for all MS and HS boundaries (for new HS opening in fall 2021).

next year’s staff work hours

REMINDERS

Please remember to take about 10 minutes to check in with your team during prep to recap what you saw during scrub-ins and brainstorm ideas for an AVID strategy that you can collaborate on and use in your classrooms. Brad has tons of AVID resources and ideas if you don’t have a team member who has anything available from trainings.  Paul and I will be joining teams during common preps next week to hear how things are moving along.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

I asked students what they liked best about their AVID elective, here are a few of the responses.

  • Interacting with the other students
  • Arguing my point
  • Moving/standing while working
  • Problem solving
  • This class is preparing me for high school and college
  • We do work in this class and then it feels like we do bigger stuff that helps us become better people.

BITS AND BOBS

Site Council

Due to limited interest in being on this team there is no need to have a vote.  Laurie Walsh was the solo certified staff who has shared an interest.  Kerri Green was the solo classified staff who shared interest.  We have one parent who was interested but unable to join the team for the first meeting.  Our first meeting will be Jan 9th at 3:00 pm.  I will publish the notes from the meeting and put them in the blog under the Document Tab.

Staff work hours

We recently asked folks to weigh in on three options around their start time for next year. At a District Leadership Team (made up of classified, certified and administrative employees) meeting earlier this week they took a look at the results and reviewed all of the comments. Here are the survey results from middle school staff. A recommendation will go to Shay by the end of January.

Funding

Governor Kate Brown has released her recommended budget. This year the Governor’s Recommended Budget includes clear priorities to better fund k-12 schools. Still a long way from being approved, it is nonetheless welcome news to have funding Oregon schools closer to the national average (QEM) than it ever has been in recent memory. Here are some highlights of the Governor’s Recommended Budget.

Absent Students

HDMS has a team of folks digging into our chronically absent students and trying to understand what we can implement to improve in this area.  One major driver for chronic absenteeism is disengagement from school. In fact, the Chronic Absenteeism Report put out by the Chief Education Office in 2017 noted that when asked if they could change “just one thing” about school, 75% of students interviewed said they wanted improved relationships with teachers.  (Stevens and Kim-Gervey 2017).  It is hard to read things like this – because I know this is something that can be fixed if/when we become aware of it.

Tardy Data

Two students were tardy four or more times from December 7th through December 13th.  There were two repeat offenders who will serve lunch detention and zero egregious tardies.

All students appearing on this report for the first time received a written notice with their specific tardy data; additionally, their family was notified of this warning.

Gender-neutral language:

This is an important topic to reflect on:

  • How does language evolve over time?
  • Who gets to decide what grammar is “right”/”wrong”?  Whose voice is left out of those decisions?
  • How does language influence what we “know” about a person or community?
  • What impact do gender-specific nouns/pronouns have on the community who speaks the language?

For older students (5th-8th?), here is a new Spanish-language article on how Google has attempted to remedy this gender bias:

https://elpais.com/tecnologia/2018/12/10/actualidad/1544429675_869722.html?fbclid=IwAR1jdrjP8sFQVYal6IICTg3jGy8nJXTmPnMLq82bVKZ7JcsvqkcQlvSAqXk

For your own info, here’s info on a dual language kindergarten teacher who just published a children’s book on the topic of using gender-neutral pronouns:

I feel safe at this school

  • At this school, I get to do what I do best every day
  • I have fun at school
  • In the last 7 days, someone has told me I have done good work at school
  • The adults at my school care about me
  • I have a mentor who encourages my development

Some score below the district average:

  • I know that I will graduate from high school
  • I have a bank account with money in it

Scores for 6th grade are generally the highest and slip slightly lower in 7th/8th grade.

This was published as part of their “Why I Teach” series in which educators are provided an opportunity to share their personal story behind why they teach. I believe we grow in empathy when we hear another’s story. I also believe it is a gift we receive when others are willing to share their personal story with us. One that we can return when we become vulnerable ourselves, letting others see the unpolished side of what makes us who we are. This article is entitled: “When a Student Picks up a Book.”

“My son, is so excited about this elective and is really looking forward to what he is going to learn. And I loved that last night when I was cleaning up dishes from dinner, he taught me all he had learned about washing kitchen things. For example, he shared with me the order in which you should wash things, how you should never put a sharp knife in soapy water, etc. It was just so fun to have a conversation like that together and one he actually initiated!!! So thank you!”                                                              ~ HDMS parent

Cultural Conversation Club:

The DI student council decided to start a “Club de cultura y conversación.”

It is aimed at any Diamondback who speaks, or is learning, Spanish.

The goal is to provide additional opportunities for using and practicing Spanish in the school community (DI students wanted more Spanish time besides their two courses, and also wanted to be inclusive of bilingualism in all its stages or paths, beyond the DI setting).

At each meeting, we will watch a short video of a cultural topic or current event, and then discuss (en español).

The first meeting will be Wednesday, Nov. 7th during 7th/8th grade lunch.  Students should bring their lunch–cookies will be provided.  The DI student council will analyze participation and feedback before setting remaining dates.

Please promote with your kids, and/or attend yourself–adults are welcome!

Thanks for supporting bilingualism at HDMS

Bend Police and Bend Fire professionals, in partnership with 9-1-1 and other first responding agencies to crisis situations, for an active threat training on November 13, 14, 15 or 19 at Elk Meadow Elementary School from 7-10 p.m. nightly.

We are looking for approximately 40 “players” for each night’s training. Participants will implement procedures they’ve learned during their own school trainings as controlled scenarios play out in front of them.
