Call to Action: State of Oregon Youth Suicide Trends

From Caroline Suiter, DCHS:

Our program would like to share an important call-to-action regarding state-level trends in youth suicide.

Oregon Health Authority recently notified us that the state is seeing an uptick in younger youth suicides (ages 14 and younger).  While the number of overall youth suicide deaths has not changed from the year prior, this change in our younger population is concerning.

We are sharing this information with you to place emphasis for those serving students, grades 4 to 9, to be vigilant in watching for warning signs and to follow your school’s protocols/Adi’s Act when they see signs for suicide risk.  We want to encourage our school districts to continue to support school staff and ensure they are receiving suicide prevention/intervention trainings as we move into this coming school year.

We have the benefit of knowing how diligent you all have been when it comes to this state-level call to action and we encourage each district to carry on with your district’s policies and protocols when it comes to suicide prevention.

Here is the link to the Call to Action from the State.

Update from U of Oregon Admissions

* Important scholarship news! We are honored to announce our partnership with Stamps Scholars is expanding, allowing us to double the number of students receiving our most prestigious and generous scholarship available. Please encourage your students to apply!

* In the state of Oregon, the public institutions worked with the Higher Education Coordinating Commission and the Oregon Department of Education to provide more flexibility in our math requirements for admission. The increased flexibility will extend to any applicant, and not just students from Oregon.

* We have reduced our application choices to two: Common Application and University of Oregon Application. As part of the application process, we require students to submit the Self-Reported Academic Record(SRAR). The weighted GPA generated by the SRAR is what determines a student’s automatic merit scholarship. It is essential that the SRAR exactly match the high school transcript. If a student has any difficulty, please encourage them to contact their admissions counselor!

J Bar J

We met with J Bar J and just wanted to send a reminder about the various programs that are under their umbrella to serve students/families in the community. Check out this link:

More to come on how we can collaborate with them!

Tele-Therapy

Reminder to review our policies on Tele-Therapy in Schools. Here is the Procedure for allowing Behavioral Health (BH) tele-health appointments for students at school. We only allow in-person counseling sessions with contracting partners. Before allowing any in person therapy to occur on campus, please reach out to Jennifer to check if there is an agreement in place.
