May 6

Congratulations- We’d like to take this opportunity to recognize our certified and classified employees of the year for Buckingham. Congratulations to Jesse Hayes for certified and Mona Ring for classified. These two exemplify outstanding service to students and go above and beyond every single day. They positively and significantly impact students and staff alike and model all of the outstanding work that is done by each of you throughout the year. Thanks to Jesse and Mona for all of their exemplary work and thanks to all of you for what you do for our students and families every day.

As teacher appreciation week comes to an end, please know that your care, dedication, hard work and devotion is recognized all year- not just during teacher appreciation week. In fact, Sometimes we don’t know the difference we make.

Testing- State testing will begin on Monday for our third, fourth and fifth graders. Most of our scheduled testing will conclude by May 20. Make ups will be on an individual basis. Many students have accommodation that require them to be tested in a separate setting. We have tried to schedule in a way that reading groups will not be affected. Plan on sending your students to regularly scheduled reading groups and pull out interventions. Logistics are sometimes challenging, so there may be a time or two when we need to cancel a group. Please be understanding and flexible.

Fire Drill- Due to state testing, next week’s fire drill will be at 12:55 instead of the originally scheduled time.

ICCL’s- ICCL’s are hired for two year terms. Two of our five ICCL terms are completed so we have two openings. If you are interested in applying for one of our two open spots, you will need to submit an application on the district’s website. Interested teachers can submit an application through Frontline Recruit/Hire.  This is a one page application that should only take you a few minutes to complete.  https://www.applitrack.com/bend/onlineapp/ . Please have it completed by Friday, May 27. We will interview all applicants. See Jon if you have any questions.

IPADS- The decision has been shared with us that ipads will be collected for grades k-4 and grade 5 will keep their ipads over the summer to bring to middle school. We will soon come out with a detailed plan/timeline for collecting ipads from grades k-4.

Personal Days- Please see the following that we received in our principal notes on Thursday:

“According to our collective bargaining agreement, certified staff may NOT take personal leave the last two weeks of school (June 6-17), unless there are “unusual or highly extenuating circumstances.” If you have a certified staff member request personal leave during that time, PLEASE MAKE SURE to forward the request to HR. We want to be consistent about what is approved.”

Upcoming Events- The upcoming events portion of the blog is about to get long. We are going to list events to the end of the year. You will notice dates set for the last week’s events/activities. No times have been solidified yet, but we will give you the details of each of those as soon as they are set. Be on the lookout for random, last minute additions/ revisions/ subtractions.

Kindergarten- Thanks to the kindergarten team for hosting a parent welcome event last night here at the school. Thanks to Margaret for being there to support registration. Thanks to Rebecca for being there and helping our ELL families. Thanks to Sarah and the PTA for promoting involvement. We had an outstanding turnout (over 35 students and their parents). Appreciate all of the planning and preparation they put into this event. It was a fun and informative evening for our incoming kinders and their parents.

Evaluations- In the next week or two, self evaluations will be assigned to you through Talent Ed. Please make every effort to complete your self evaluation on or before May 20. Once you have completed your self evaluation, we will schedule a time to meet with your evaluator (Jon or Gary).

Staffing- Our staffing plan is complete and we are waiting for approval from Tammy Doty. Once we have approval, we will be given the green light to do any hiring that we might have. Jon will give a more detailed picture of where we are for staffing at our meeting on Tuesday. As mentioned in a previous edition of the weekly blog (April 8th), we will talk with anyone who we are considering moving to a different grade level. We may be surprised and told to do something, but until then please know that we will give people as much heads up as possible. As always, please come and see us if you have a question.

Testing- Testing starts May 9- just over a week away. There is still time for k-2 classes to adopt a third, fourth or fifth grade class to show them support for the coming weeks rigorous testing schedule (in fact, we still only have one class adopted).

Teacher Appreciation Week- Remember next week is Teacher Appreciation Week (and we are all teachers of our students here at Buckingham). Check out all of the fun events (food) planned for next week.

Reminders- Just a reminder that as we begin to round into the homestretch (see light at the end of the tunnel, etc.), we need to continue to be vigilant around our expectations. Hats, hoods, etc. need to be off in halls/common spaces. Students should be reminded to be quiet and respectful in hallways, walk with your students in line, be on time to pick students up from recess (probably 3/4 of recess issues happen in the last two minutes and line)… An ounce of prevention. Thank you.

Upcoming Events- As mentioned at the beginning of our SIW Wednesday, the next month and a half is going to be full of activities and events. We will do our best to keep you updated here in the blog, but please be on the lookout for random emails informing you of happenings when the info can’t wait until Friday. Although it seems like we only have a couple weeks, there are still nearly two months left. Let’s work together, lift each other up, and finish the year strong!

May 3- Staff Meeting- 2:30- Library

May 4- SIW- Teacher Prep

May 5- Kindergarten EBISS

May 9-20- State Testing- Grades 3, 4 and 5

Congratulations- Congratulations to Megan Williams for completing her teaching degree through George Fox University! She has accepted a teaching position in Madras next year. Thanks to Margy for acting as her cooperating teacher this year and thanks to Laci for being creative with schedules in order to make it happen. Great work, Megan!!

Character Trait- The character trait for the month of May is Caring. If you haven’t submitted certificates for April (or March….), please do so. You can put them in the gold basket in the workroom and Jon will congratulate these students on morning announcements and deliver the certificate during class.

Next Friday’s spirit day is “Book Character Day”.

Kindergarten Kick Off- The kindergarten team will be having a kick off for incoming kindergartners next Thursday from 5:00-6:00. Please pass the word to any families you know that have an incoming kinder.

Testing- State testing for grades 3, 4 and 5 will be conducted May 9-20. They will be testing at various times each morning. The first week will be the ELA and the second week will be the math. Fifth graders will also be completing a science test before June. Please be conscious of testing and do not enter classrooms while testing is taking place unless you have completed TA training. For grades k-2, you still can adopt a class. There are 8 (of 9) still available. There may be some sped/ title groups impacted during these weeks. We are doing our best to schedule in a way that only impacts those groups for grades 3, 4 and 5, but there may be unavoidable situations where you might have a group cancelled. Please be flexible and patient as meeting all of the accommodations and designated supports for students is challenging.

Third, fourth and fifth grade teachers- You will be getting a separate email with reminders/ directions. Please complete the security training and submit the test security assurance form if you haven’t already done so. As soon as I have that, I can enter you into the system.

Erin’s Law- Thanks to those who have input the dates you taught the Erin’s law curriculum. Please remember to do so if you haven’t already.

PTA- Our PTA had a meeting! That in and of itself is a celebration as the last two years have proved challenging for our parents trying to help our school. We had several parents and teachers attend in the library Thursday. The theme was really about fundraising for our school and how to start planning and implementing some fun community building events again. More info to come.

Katherine Switzer– Monday, April 18, was Patriots’ Day. While we here on the west coast don’t think much of it, it is a big deal in the town of Boston. The biggest part of the celebration in Boston is, perhaps, the most famous road running race in the world, the Boston Marathon. Every Patriots’ Day, thousands of people run the 26.2 mile course through the streets of Boston. Pre pandemic, in 2019, over 30,000 people started the race; 16,550 men and 13,684 women. 55 years ago, in 1967, the numbers looked very different. This week of Patriots’ Day is a great time to take a look back at Katherine Switzer’s story and a milestone in women’s sports. The article is long, but worth a read. If you don’t have time to read the article, the video is a great synopsis.

PS- This year’s winner of the women’s division was Peres Jepchirchir from Kenya. She finished the 26.2 miles in 2:21:01. That’s 5:23 per mile…or another way to look at it: go to Mt. View. Get on the track and run one lap in just under 81 seconds. Not easy. But don’t stop until you’ve run another 104 laps at the same pace.

Jon’s Absence- If you didn’t know, Jon’s father-in-law passed away Wednesday. Thanks for reaching out and providing support during a challenging time.

Good News- It’s great to be able to start off this week’s notes with some very good news. Kevin M. reached out this past week to share that at his last appointment there is no indication of any cancer. He will have two more check ins during the next 12 months. If there are still no indications in the next 12 months, he can begin using the word “cured.” Very happy to be able to share this news with you all and hoping that the next 12 months brings even better news.

Conferences- It was really great to see so many parents back in the building for conferences. We heard nothing but positives from parents. Thanks for working so hard to connect and partner with families to help each of our students succeed. The time, thought, and emotional energy that goes into conferences is recognized and appreciated!

Erin’s Law- Some of you may have had parents ask about previewing materials we are using for Erin’s law. We included this link in the informational letter we sent home. Please feel free to send the link to parents. If they would like more information, they can call Jon or Gary. In addition, please remember to complete the google form indicating the dates you/your grade taught the lessons.

Volunteer Information- With parents starting to come back in the building, those of you who want can begin taking volunteers again. This info sheet with live links is now ready for your information.

Testing- for those of you participating in state testing, please complete the TA training and submit to me your signed test security assurance form. Since I was out on Tuesday, we will reschedule the scheduling meeting very soon and get that to everyone. Thanks to Katie Chamberland who has already adopted a class. Please check into it and do so if you haven’t already. Remember, it just means making a poster of encouragement and bringing it to your class the Friday before testing (May 6).

Personal Days- This was in the elementary principal notes. Bottom line: if you want a personal day, submit your request as we may not be able to approve.

“It’s that time of year where people will be cashing in their personal days.  Please remember the 5% rule.  No more than 5% of your bargaining unit (certified) can be out on the same day with personal days.  As Steve Herron mentioned last week at our meeting, it is up to the school to keep track.  Rule of thumb is that for larger schools, It’s 2 people. Please pass this information on to your office managers so they can help you manage these requests so you don’t approve too many for one day.”

Testing– Third, fourth and fifth graders will be participating in state testing from May 9- May 20 (and probably some make up tests past that date). After having no tests two years ago and tests that didn’t count last year, we are now back to the full meal deal. All of them will take a math and ELA test and fifth graders will also have a science test. These tests can be long and for some students very stressful. In an effort to show those students that we are all pulling for them, we are asking for k-2 classes to ‘adopt’ a 3-5 class. We only ask that adopting classes make a poster of some kind to encourage your ‘adopted’ class and deliver that poster on Friday, May 6. Please sign up to adopt a class. If there are no classes left, you are welcome to find someone to partner with. Thanks for helping to make the tests a positive experience for our students.

Erin’s Law- Letters went home this week. Please plan to start your lessons this month. Please remember that we need to record the dates that we teach lessons.

Absences- If you are going to be absent, please be sure that Jon and Becky both know as far ahead of time as you can. Let them both know if it is a prearranged absence. If it is a sudden sick day, please also let both of them know. Not knowing that a staff member is absent or going to be absent can put them in an awkward position as they like to be prepared for subs. While it is important for them to be informed of an absence, please know that texts/calls between the hours of 9 PM and 6 AM, may not get answered right away. Thanks for your cooperation.

Conferences- Please be sure to input your conference schedule. If you need one of us to be at a conference, please indicate in the schedule doc and give us a heads up so we are sure to look at the schedule and plan ahead.

Staffing- Thanks to those who submitted their staffing interest form. Earlier this week we received our staffing allocations for next year and we are beginning to put together a plan. If we are thinking/planning to change someone’s current assignment, we will be sure to speak with that person before sharing/ announcing staffing to all. In other words, if we don’t talk to you about what you will be teaching next year, you can assume it will be the same grade. We know this can be an anxious time for some, so please don’t hesitate to come and chat if you have questions. Job fair is Monday at the fairgrounds. Jon and Gary will both be pulling a shift. The job fair is highly recommended if you are a temporary staff. Questions? Just ask.

Vision Screening- A way ahead of time heads up- vision screening will be on May 16. It is our current understanding that all grades will be screened this year. We will work with them to try and make sure we don’t interrupt testing for grades 3, 4 and 5. More info as we get closer.

Foundational Skills Adoption Update- Work is continuing on BLP’s foundational skills curriculum adoption process. Interested staff members can check out the schedule and resources. The team is in the process of scheduling a Spanish language session and will keep you up to date on when they have a final plan.  In addition,  they will have 5 sites where staff can view materials:  Rosland, Silver Rail, Ensworth, High Lakes, Ponderosa.  The materials will be available for viewing from April 13th-May 2nd. You are welcome to leave after school during our April 20 SIW or leave right after students any other day to view.

Equity Resources- We will link BLP’s Equity Resources page in the Bronco Bulletin. This is a great spot for you to find tools and strategies for use in your classroom.

Volunteer Information- For those of you who are going to begin taking volunteers, the info sheet with live links is now ready for your information.

Nutrition Services Changes- You have probably noticed some changes to our nutrition services this past week. Cassie has been moved to another school. Sarah Mendiola will be replacing Cassie at Buckingham. They will not be adding another person, but will increase Sarah’s hours. Please welcome to Sarah in her new role and be patient as she tries to handle breakfast all by herself! We will miss Cassie and all that she has done for Buckingham and wish her the best of luck. As part of this change, we will continue to only have one spot for breakfast pick up- the southwest corner of the building by the k/1 playground.

Summer School- Summer school is happening and will once again be taking place at Buckingham. The district will be sending us a list of top priority students just as they did last year. We will be asking grade levels to review those lists and make changes based on your professional judgement and provided criteria if you disagree with the lists. It was suggested that conferences would be a good time for us to offer summer school to eligible parents and we have been asked to have our lists finalized by May 1. As soon as we get the lists from the district we will share with grade levels so that you can review. Stay tuned.

Summer school positions are open and posted, and you are encouraged to apply if you are interested.

Instructional Coach Position Available – BLP will be hiring a 1.0 instructional coach. You can apply on the BLS website.  The position will close on April 10th. See the link for more info.

Ready to Learn Kits- Amanda shared some additional resources for your use.

Staffing- If you haven’t already turned your ‘interest’ form into Jon or Gary, please do so ASAP. We will receive our allocations early next week and will be able to begin creating a staffing plan for next year soon after.

Transfer Interviews- Please see the transfer process google doc for directions if you are interested in pursuing options at locations other than Buckingham. If you complete your ‘interest’ form and submit to Jon and Gary indicating your interest in another school, we may be able to facilitate the process.

From Student Leadership- Here is a message from our 5th grade leadership team.

Dear Teachers,

Hi, our names are Brynn Johansen and Emilee Maple and we’re on the 5th Grade Leadership Committee for Character Traits. For the month of March, we focused on Fairness. We created some videos to help your classes learn more about fairness. We were able to present our work to some classrooms, however we were not able to visit all of you! We have attached a link to a video presentation you can show to your class. It includes some discussion questions. We also have two skit video links that can even help the youngest kids to understand fairness.

March 18

State Testing- The window for state testing is now open and will be open until June 3. Don’t worry, we aren’t late. Grades 3-5 will all be participating in ELA and Math. 5th grade will also be completing the Science test. There are a lot of things we need to cover before beginning. In order to cover everything we will have a testing training meeting on Tuesday, March 29 at 2:30 in the library. If you teach 3rd, 4th or 5th grade, special education, Title or are an EA who might proctor some of the tests, please plan on attending. If you are an EA and that is outside of your scheduled work time, we can time sheet or trade for the extra time, or you can connect with Gary to figure out an alternative. Included in the meeting will be security training, accommodation planning and testing scheduling.

Conferences- Guidelines/ Timelines for conferences. Please fill out your schedule so we know down at the office.

STEM- From your STEM team– STEM – Life Science

We are so excited to begin our schoolwide Life Science units that will begin when we return from Spring Break!

This is our first time trying to vertically align a NGSS strand and we thank you for your willingness and flexibility as we strive to create meaningful learning experiences for our students.

Many staff members expressed a desire for a Padlet as a way to share what we are doing in class.  For this Padlet, each week your grade level PLC will write a short blurb and attach some photographic evidence of the great things you are doing in class.  The Padlet link can also be found in the Bronco Bulletin Website STEM page.  Admin will use the Padlet to share information in their newsletters.

Another way to highlight schoolwide student learning is through sharing Fun Fact morning announcements.  Here’s what your team will need to do:  On this document you will record the Fun Fact your students will be sharing, as well as the 2 students at your grade level who can present at the morning announcements with Mr. Lindsay.  (Each grade will be presenting twice, 2 students each time.). Please sign up by Friday, April 1.

Welcome and Thanks- We would like to formally welcome Sharon Stevens, who will be subbing for Alyssa K. the rest of the year. If you haven’t already met Sharon, take a moment to go introduce yourself. We would also like to thank Amy Ruff for filling in so well for Claire. Claire will return to her classroom after spring break and we are sure to see Amy in classrooms around the school.

EBISS- Beginning the week we return from spring break, EBISS will be held on Thursdays. The first Thursday EBISS will be fourth grade.

Staffing- Sometime soon after spring break, we will be receiving our staffing allocations from the district office and will use those allocations to create a staffing plan. Please take a few minutes to complete this staff input form and turn it into Jon or Gary by Wednesday, April 6. These will help us if we need to make any changes to assignments for next year. Questions? Come and see us.

March 11

Safe Touch- From Skip- A big thank you to the Salem-Keizer Schools and a group of our elementary counselors, who got together to format the K-5 lessons from the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Program.  This program is an alternative to “Safe Touch” that we will be piloting instead.

The new curriculum includes four 15 minute lessons designed to be delivered one time per week by classroom teachers. We were provided this information in our principal notes yesterday. Upon our return from spring break, we will provide a timeline for teaching the lessons. This will include parent contact/ permission protocols. In the meantime, if you would like to take a look at the materials ahead of time, you can find them here.

EBISS- We will be changing this from Wednesdays to Thursdays. Many meetings are called on Wednesdays for specialists and admin, making it difficult for everyone to attend. Thursdays are already grade level/PLC meetings, so once in a cycle your team’s Thursday meeting will be an EBISS meeting. We have updated the master meeting calendar. This will begin after spring break with fourth grade.

Duties- With the addition of a couple new students to some of our programs, we have had to adjust our duty schedule significantly. If you have a duty, please look at the schedule and see if it matches what you are doing. Please also look at the start times and do whatever is possible to be there at your start time. I realize that from time to time there will be things that interfere with you being on time, but remember when you are late, it impacts others. Thank you.

Conferences- Parent input forms should have gone out yesterday. Please see our guidelines for a timeline of what goes home and when.

Staffing- Believe it or not, it’s that time of year when we begin looking at staffing for next year. In the next week or two, we will be receiving our staffing allocations from the district office and will use those allocations to create a staffing plan. Please take a few minutes to complete this staff input form and turn it into Jon or Gary by Wednesday, April 6. These will help us if we need to make any changes to assignments for next year. Questions? Come and see us.

Masking- A couple reminders. Please make sure to talk to students about masks on Monday. A link was sent in the last set of notes. More info is available on the district’s website.

IPS- Please read the MTSS (formerly EBISS) overview. It is a nice summary of tier 1, 2 and 3. Tier 3 is IPS. In addition, check out the Tier 3 (IPS) checklist for if/ when a student moves to IPS. We will go over these more thoroughly at a future staff meeting.

Conferences As discussed at our staff meeting on Tuesday, this spring’s conferences will be in person or virtual. Please review conference guidance for important dates/directions. We’ve included below what Skip sent to principals about conferences. It looks like more info to come. We will be trying to get FINAL answers asap- specifically before March 9 when we send home parent input forms. Depending on what we hear, there could be changes to our guidance document linked above. We’ll keep you informed.

Conferences From Skip – As of right now the message we are delivering is that conferences are in person with the option of having them virtually at the request of the parent.  We are still discussing this topic so that stance is not 100% final.  However, conferences, in person or virtual, should be conducted at the school.

Reading Adoption Info- Thanks to Lindsley for sharing an update on BLP’s reading adoption process and timeline. Reach out to Lindsley if you have any questions.

Masking – After March 12, masking will become strongly recommended, rather than required, for students and staff. This means our hallways, classrooms, gyms, libraries and other school spaces will likely include students and staff who are wearing masks and those who are not. While this will create visible differences, it is key that we continue to honor all students and staff and help them feel like part of a rich community of learners.  Jennifer Hauth has put together activities for Friday, March 11th and Monday, March 14th to help with classroom conversations that honor individual choices.

Friday Fun Day– March’s spirit day will be Friday, March 18. The theme is Career Day.

February 25

Inclement Weather- Elementary schools in BLP are to keep students inside if temperature (including windchill) drops below 20. We have a bit of wiggle room for judgement, but if it is below 20 we will be inside in most cases. That means in the morning students will be going directly to classrooms when they arrive. Buses drop students at 7:20.

SIW- Thanks to Deborah, Margy, Alicia, Frank and the rest of the STEM team for a great STEM SIW on Wednesday. Thanks to the rest of you for all of your participation. Moving in the right direction!

March Character Trait- March’s Character Trait is FAIRNESS. We will once again be giving out certificates (this would be a gentle reminder on the heels of Challey’s reminder to turn in certificates for February if you haven’t), announcing names and displaying on the hall TV monitor. Remember that character trait resources can be found in the Bronco Bulletin.

PLC- Just a reminder that our expectation is that grade levels are having 2 PLC meetings/ month and recording discussion in our PLC doc.

ELPA Testing- Rebecca will be administering ELPA for our ELL students March 7-11. All ELL groups will be cancelled that week. Rebecca will be in contact with grades to set up a testing schedule.

Student Teacher- Katy Wyant is a student teacher who will be joining Kristine Hable’s class beginning March 7. Please welcome Katy when you see her.

EAP- Please don’t forget that our School District offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) to help staff navigate life stressors and/or manage life changing events.  The EAP program is administered by UpriseHealth.  The services they offer at no cost to Bend La-Pine School district staff members (minus substitute teachers) are outlined below.  For the 21/22 school year, each covered member can receive up to six EAP visits per year which is an increase from the three allowed in the 20/21 school year.
