3-8-21 RHS NEWSLETTER

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

After a LONG absence, nothing feels better than the energy and action of STUDENTS AT SCHOOL! Featured below are the sounds and sights of just one day at school last week! The hum of inquiry based science labs, the hope and excitement of college planning in action, the sweetness of tasting honey in Spanish class, and thoughtful connections with senior citizens near and far about their WWII experiences… this and MUCH more!

This week, with Science teacher Heidi’s amazing lab set ups, AP Environmental Science conducted soil studies for their farm plots, while 10th grade climate scientists gathered data related to reflectivity of light and dark objects around campus to draw real world connections related to the Albedo effect! 11th graders connected with Jen and School to Career this week for great futures exploration. We love having a buzz of learning happening around campus again! #realmshighschool #leadersofchange

IMPORTANT UPCOMING DATES

  • Tuesday March 9th – Family Night Out @ The Point (info below)

TWO WEEKS LEFT IN THE TRIMESTER!

There are just two weeks left in the trimester so it is DEFINITELY academic crunch time! It is SO important that all students (and parents) are keeping a close eye on StudentVue right now and that those with missing assignments or low grades are working CLOSELY with their teachers and are using their asynchronous time three days a week VERY wisely! It IS our expectation that students who have ANY work due or overdue MUST use their asynchronous days to complete work.

WEDNESDAY SUPPORT: On Wednesdays there are TWO ways to get support from teachers while at home. We have a full morning schedule of office hours and we ALSO have ON SITE “WIPS” (Wednesday In Person Support) where students can some on campus from 10AM – 12PM by invitation. If your student needs this extra support but has not been invited yet, please reach out to [email protected] or call us at 541-355-5502.

WILL THERE BE INTENSIVES THIS TRIMESTER AT RHS?

There is a long story behind this decision, but the short answer is… no, not really. For several reasons, it is just not the right decision this trimester. Please don’t worry… we STILL BELIEVE in Intensives, and they WILL make a comeback! But for this trimester, the majority of our students will have TWO more weeks left in the trimester to complete their academic coursework.

In the meantime, we WILL be offering a special “Independent Study Intensive” (.5 credit) to students who have demonstrated academic excellence and readiness over the course of the 2nd trimester. We will be sharing all of these details with our students THIS WEEK, but if you are curious to read more about the “why” behind our decision, or to read more about the details of our Independent Study Intensive plan, you can read more here!

Students (along with their parent/guardian) who are being invited to this opportunity will hear more very shortly!

IT IS APPLICATION SEASON FOR 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR!

Do you know of a student who would thrive at Realms High School? The application season for next year is upon us, and we’d love for you to spread the word. Applications for all grades are due by Friday March 19th. We have 50 9th grade openings (and 40 applications already) as well as a handful of openings at other grade levels. If applications outnumber spots, we will hold a lottery in early April.

Please spread the word. Applications are ONLINE on our website

Remember – current Realms High School students do NOT need to re-apply each year.

CLASS OF 2021 GRADUATION – COMING SOON!

Thanks to a committee of parent helpers (parents of current Juniors and Seniors) we are underway with planning the first ever Realms HS graduation. We are planning an IN PERSON graduation following all of the County guidelines and keeping our fingers crossed that COVID cases continue to drop!

Date: Wednesday, June 9. 4PM – 6PM.

Location: Unitarian Universalist Gathering Hall (on Skyliners Rd, kinda across the street from Pacific Crest MS

Who: Due to COVID-19 restrictions we will be limiting our graduation to our graduates and a limited number of immediate family

ACT TESTING @ RHS AND IN OUR DISTRICT

We are PLANNING & HOPING to offer the ACT to Juniors this year who are motivated to take it – SATURDAY JUNE 12th. We are working closely with Summit HS to keep slots for RHS students at this site due to the pandemic.

WHY TAKE THE ACT? Most colleges have yet to announce their admission policies regarding testing as part of their application acceptance requirements for the class of 2022 (our Juniors). No one can predict what each school’s decision will be, or when they will make their announcements. Because of this, we strongly recommend that if you are considering applying to any 4-year schools, that you register to take the ACT on June 12th.

INTERESTED?? PLEASE FILL THIS QUICK INTEREST FORM ASAP:

As soon as we hear confirmation about this date, we will let you know ASAP.

BANFF FILM FESTIVAL – hosted by Friends of Realms!

For many years now Friends of Realms has hosted the Banff Film Festival at The Tower Theatre. This event has always been one of the biggest fundraisers of the year and is a community favorite.

This year we are hosting the film festival as usual, only this time from the comfort of your own couch: SAME AMAZING FILMS, SAME GREAT CAUSE, NEW… “LOCATION!”

Last year this community event (two nights at the Tower) raised over $16,000 for Realms schools. Given the pandemic, it won’t be easy, but our goal is to do the same this year.

THREE ways you can help…

THANK YOU TO OUR 2021-22 SPONSORS SO FAR!
