RMS Newsletter 9-27-21

We are officially rolling now at Realms Middle School and WOW – it is fun to have kids back on campus full time! The energy of our students is what makes school, well, real… AND awesome! I think ALL OF US (teachers, parents, and students) are glad to be doing school, “irl” as they say!

Our master schedule of classes is humming along, our new “Enrichment” class is in place, the cross country team has had its first meet, and we are excited to keep adding elements to our program… all school community meetings, fieldwork, and hopefully some after school clubs in time.

While our first week or so included lots of community building and getting-to-know-you activities (see below!) we are now ramping up to full speed academically and it is a GREAT time to make sure you are set up with Canvas Observer accounts and to make sure you know how to log in to ParentVue.

Please reach out to us if you have any questions!

Roger White, Principal.

IMPORTANT: iPad insurance for this school year is available online through the end of the month (which is THIS THURSDAY). Don’t get stuck paying for a screen crack or your stolen iPad! Insurance is only good for ONE school year, so if you haven’t bought it yet, now is your chance. $30 per year. Use this link (also accessible via the school website) to purchase insurance: https://touchbase.bend.k12.or.us/

6th Grade Families: Acceptable Use Agreement Required – 6th graders are required to sign and return the Acceptable Use Agreement. Please download, review it with your student, and either email it back to [email protected] or print and return to the office. Thanks!

COVID-19 Reminders

We are doing everything we can on campus to mitigate the spread of COVID-19, including enforcing consistent and proper mask use, distancing and quarantining when needed, though our goal is to KEEP KIDS IN SCHOOL (and safe)!!

Please remember that students (and staff) experiencing symptoms should stay home, even if you think it is “just a cold”!! Bend LaPine has put together this Updated Ready Set Learn – an EXCELLENT and easy to understand resource for what to do and what to expect when it comes to COVID on campus.

When in doubt please call our office!!

Canvas & ParentVue – Our Academic Communication Tools

We will be sharing more details and showing you how to access all your student’s information on Canvas & Synergy during a WebEx on

Thursday October 7th, at 6PM on Webex Here

WHAT IS CANVAS? Canvas is our Learning Management System and is the tool that students and teachers use daily to “post” post assignments, resources, instructions and important information on a daily basis. Students use Canvas to access these assignments/resources, track their due dates, submit their work and access feedback (and grades) from teachers!

WHAT CANVAS IS NOT? Canvas does NOT replace an interactive and dynamic classroom environment where learning by doing, learning by discussion, and learning by discovery takes place every day! Realms MS is founded on a mission of interactive and experiential learning, and the power of learning not just individually, but also as a member of a classroom community. Canvas is a great tool to supplement our dynamic, in-person classroom environment and to provide access to resources for students when they are not on campus!

WHERE TO LOOK FOR ACADEMIC PROGRESS INFORMATION? Right now, the place for students (and parents) to find and track information about assignment completion, feedback and grades is in Canvas. Teachers will be providing narrative feedback and scoring assignments in Canvas. We are NOT currently uploading grades to ParentVue, however by Monday October 4th you will be able to find scores on ParentVue. UNTIL THEN, THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS SET UP A CANVAS OBSERVER ACCOUNT!

Canvas – Setting Up Parent Observer Accounts

For parents who what to be able to check grades or support their student academically, setting up a Canvas Observer account is essential. We STRONGLY SUGGEST this for parents of all 9th and 10th graders, and for students in any grade who benefit from a little extra support at home for their school success!

Setting up a Parent Observer account in Canvas is actually not too tricky, and our school district has provided great instructions and help on this Canvas For Parents web page. The video below walks you through the steps. Remember, you WILL need your student’s help: your student will need to generate a “pairing code” from their Canvas account and give you that pairing code.

Amy also created this great Parent Guide to Canvaswith screenshots last year!
