4-1-21 RHS NEWSLETTER

RETURN TO “ALL IN” ON MONDAY APRIL 12th!!

As I am sure you have heard, the Bend LaPine School District is returning to all students at school every day… WOW, it has been a long time coming! Based on new guidance from the CDC and the Oregon Department of Education, schools throughout Bend LaPine are returning to “pre-pandemic” schedules, though there certainly will still be important COVID related safety measure (masks, 3 foot social distancing, cleaning protocols etc!) that will remain firmly in place.

We are thrilled to be able to see students every day, to bring back more of our “Realms HS Style” curriculum that has been difficult over WebEx, and help re-build the warm, welcoming, student centered school culture that makes our school special!!

SCHEDULE: We will be sharing more details about our schedule in the coming week, but we expect start and end times something like to 9:25am – 3:20pm, with a 1:50pm dismissal for “School Improvement Wednesdays”. And the most important bottom line is that ALL students will have the opportunity to be at school every day!

ROOM CAPACITIES: Based on the new 3 foot distancing rules and our smaller class sizes at RHS, we will easily be able to accommodate all students safely in our classrooms! The warehouse also provides us LOTS of opportunities to spread out as needed, and especially at lunch when 6 foot distancing remains in effect.

WHAT IF’s?

  • If the COVID-19 numbers go up and push us into the next risk category, the all in situation could change, though we expect that numbers are likely to continue their downward trend as weather improves and vaccination rates increase!
  • If you are not sure you are ready for the transition back to “all in” for any reason, the BLSD is continuing it’s “District CDL” program and there ARE options through Bend LaPine Online – please reach out to Roger ([email protected] or at 541-355-5502) if you are considering not returning.

LAST TWO WEEKS OF HYBRID and 3rd TRIMESTER CLASSES BEGIN MONDAY

Our 3rd trimester begins on Monday March 29th! Student schedules are available on ParentVue or StudentVue. If you have ANY questions about your courses, please reach out ASAP!

For the next two weeks will remain in HYBRID! Just to remind you, our Hybrid Bell Schedule on Mon/Thurs(A Cohort) and Tues/Fri (B Cohort) is 9:30 – 3:20.

HOWEVER – there will be NO OFFICE HOURS or Wednesday In Person Support sessions at RHS (or any of our District high schools) during these next two Wednesdays as per District agreement.

A Cohort and B Cohort remain in tact and consistent from last trimester with just a FEW limited exceptions… and ANY students who have switched cohorts have been talked to individually already!

“CREATURES OF SURVIVAL”FRESHMAN ART

This trimester our 9th grade students created inspiring sculptures that represent individual traits of resilience that have helped them survive through both natural and human made disasters. This project was titled, “Creatures of Survival”. Realms High School has been invited to exhibit three of our highest quality student sculptures from this project, along with other high school artworks that support a theme of resilience and illumination at the Peterson Contemporary Gallery of Art during the month of April.

Please visit the Peterson Contemporary Gallery of Art to see the impressive and meaningful work our students have created, which are supported by artist statements explaining the intentions behind their work written in English class. Works will be exhibited alongside the Illumination works of Jack Braman and Bart Walker. Stay tuned for further details!

SOME UPCOMING LEADERSHIP TRANSITIONS AT REALMS MIDDLE & HIGH SCHOOL

A LETTER FROM ROGER

We are going to be doing some hiring for a new Administrator to join the Realms Middle/High School family, and we would LOVE to invite some RHS parent and student input!!

Please know that Roger is NOT leaving, however in order to continue to build connections between Realms Middle and High Schools, and in response to Dirk Matthias’s resignation (Dirk has been the Administrator at RMS for the past 3 years) Roger will be based more at Realms Middle next year and our new Administrator will coordinate day to day logistics at Realms High School.

Read all the “shared leadership” details in this letter from Roger, and share YOUR INPUT for our hiring process on this survey!

ENROLLMENT AND LOTTERY FOR 2021-22 SCHOOL YEAR

While the “deadline” for applications for next year’s 9th grade class has “officially passed”, we do still have LIMITED openings at 10th – 12th grade for next year, AND we are accepting applications for our 9th grade wait list. Application for RHS next year can be found here.

Please feel free to spread the word.

INTENT TO RETURN – current RHS students are automatically re-enrolled for next year. However, you can expect an “Intent to Return” form in April that will be a part of our “forecasting process” in which students select classes for next year based on their interests and their graduation pathways (don’t worry, we provide lots of on site support!). This forecasting process will be your opportunity to see what courses we are offering in 2021-22, to build your schedule (or to let us know if you are NOT coming back to RHS). Stay tuned!
