This and That:

2019-2020 Staff Start Times: Principals have been asked to share information regarding staff start times at SIW this coming Wednesday. I will be sharing at the beginning of our SIW time.
Report Card “Tights”:
- Scores should not depend on which teacher a student has. (i.e. one teacher grades “easy” while another grades “hard.”)
- Scores should reflect student proficiency on each standard. Do not inflate scores out of kindness and do not decrease a score to make a point. Scores may be used as part of future identification processes and should be able to be backed up by factual data. Be sure to work with case managers regarding scoring students on IEPs.
- Scoring between grade levels should be consistent. A student shouldn’t get a “3” in a standard at the end of one grade and enter the next grade at a level “1.”
- Comments should reflect that you know and care about each child.
Important Report Card Dates:
- Friday, 2/1 – First day that report cards can be marked as complete and/or printed.
- Tuesday, 2/5 – Last day for report cards to be complete, printed, and stuffed into envelopes.
- Wednesday, 2/6 – All report cards sent via U.S. Mail to families.
PBIS/ Zones of Regulation: Spend some time diving deeper into Zones of Regulation activities. This is an investment in your classroom culture. Explore this link for ways to reinforce self-awareness in your classroom.
Tuesday Observations: I am currently taking a class called “School Retool” as part of my administrative PLC. I will be out of the building this Thursday to attend my first of four classes this winter/spring. If my pre-work is any indication of the class, I think I am going to really enjoy it and will hopefully bring value to my work with our Elk Meadow community. In order to be ready for my class on Thursday, I have asked Jessica and Frank to help me with some really quick drop-by observations in classrooms on Tuesday. Between the three of us, I am hoping that we can get into each classroom on Thursday for 5 minutes or less to collect school wide data (no individual classroom data will be collected or shared).
SIW This Week: I’m excited that Scott McDonald will be joining us with a technology/ art SIW this week.
New DHS Hotline- DHS is in the process of implementing a statewide Child Abuse Hotline, which will be completed in April 2019, but it has already been started in Deschutes, Jefferson and Crook Counties beginning on November 1, 2018. The reporting number has changed. It is now 541-693-2854 statewide. Below are a few the “upgrades” anticipated with this change:
- They are working to correct some telephone line problems
- There will be the ability for the caller to leave their return phone number in case they can’t wait for someone to answer
- They are in the process of hiring 75% additional staff to handle these calls!
- They have implemented an email address for people to send concerns/feedback to: [email protected]
To Do:
Fire Safety: On Friday, January 4th, the district sent a fire & life safety message in the Staff Spotlight to all staff, reminding us of several important practices. Administrators have been asked to emphasize the below two. Please take a few moments this week to take a look around your classroom and wing and ensure we do not have any of these issues at Elk Meadow:
- Staff should check for any blocked or impaired fire/life safety devices in their classrooms or workplaces. If they have any potential issues, these are to be reported to administrators and/or staff custodians. These issues should be addressed as quickly as possible.
- It is a violation of the law to alter, remove, or tamper with any fire safety components.

- Wednesday: Earthquake Drill, Site Council
