Principal’s Hello

Hey, everyone!

We’re are psyched for our Valentine’s Day Dance! A huge shout out goes to our Pacific Crest Community Organization, our parent volunteers, our 8th grade WEB Leaders, and our activities staff who have all put together a fun experience for our kids. There are hearts everywhere! This speaks to our third theme this year: rekindling the middle school experience!

I was in some 8th grade classrooms last week for an hour and saw some cool things: Mr. Bjorback teaching rhetorical moves through sentence frames, Ms. Crabtree showing the effects of vacuum implosion on aluminum cans, and Ms. Dziurzynski introducing a function machine that spits out different answers despite identical inputs. I’m amazed at all the cool lessons I see in our classrooms.

I will try and do a better job of describing all the great stuff I see here at PCMS every day. Of course, so much of it cannot be captured in words, like all the fist bumps you randomly get from kids who are happy to be healthy, alive, and cared for by our amazing staff.

Thank you for your partnership!

Sean

The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC)

Testing is scheduled for all 6th – 8th students later this spring. We are expecting all students to participate in the assessment. We plan to conduct testing at PCMS in late April / early May 2023. If parents choose to opt their student(s) out of testing, please click on the link the following link, complete and return the form to our main office by April 1, 2023.

These tests are designed to be one tool that assesses students’ mastery of Oregon content standards. OSAS includes the English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and English Language Proficiency assessments.

Track Registration Opening Soon!

Registration for Track and Field will be open from February 20th through March 24th for all students. Middle school sports create opportunities for kids to try new sports, and our program is appropriate for all experience levels. Registration information is available on the PCMS Athletics webpage. Additional information regarding the upcoming season will be posted on the Athletics webpage soon.

Early Eagle Open Gym Discontinued

Due to low participation and volunteer availability, we are discontinuing the Early Eagle Open Gym on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Valentine’s Day is Tuesday, 2/14

Val-o-grams will be delivered during advisory. We encourage all students to wear pink, red or white on this day.

Students Vaping, Concerns and How to Help

Bend-La Pine Schools middle and high schools are concerned about students vaping at school and while in the community. Although most Bend-La Pine Schools students are not vaping, youth vaping is still concerning because of the health risks and impact on learning.

Parents and guardians, please read this letter from your school about the following:

  • How families can protect their child from vaping,
  • What our schools are doing to prevent and address vaping and other youth health issues, and
  • Why students’ vaping is a concern.

Additionally, you can listen to the recent Supe’s On podcast called “How vaping is affecting our schools and what we can do to help.”
