Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

We had another fantastic week here at Pacific Crest. Administrators started getting into classrooms to observe teachers, and we weren’t surprised to see clear expectations, academic rigor, and genuine care and warmth from our teachers toward our students. What an amazing place to work!

Next week in Advisory we give our Waypoints assessment, which measures empathy, sense of self, and social connectedness. This data allows to form small groups of students who need additional support to be academically successful. Next week we also introduce clubs and our Standard Response Protocol, which is how we conduct ourselves in the event of an emergency.

We are humming along here–hope to see you next week at Back to School Night! And have a great weekend in this warm fall weather!

Student Item Deliveries

If you need to drop off items for your student during the school day, please bring them to the Attendance Office, located to the right as you enter the building.

When delivering items, please be sure to:

  • Drop them off at the Attendance Office.
  • Place all items in a bag.
  • Clearly label the bag with your student’s name.
  • Follow these steps especially for shoes, gym equipment, and other personal belongings.

Items available for pickup will be placed on a cart outside the Attendance Office. Students are expected to come down and collect their belongings themselves. Please note that a reminder note will not be sent to their classroom.

Thank you for helping us keep this process smooth, efficient, and less disruptive to our classrooms.

Student Absences & Pickups

The easiest way to report your student’s absence is by email at [email protected]. You can also use the new ParentVUE option—it’s quick and convenient. If you’d rather call, please leave a message at 541-355-7820.

For early pickups, advance notice is especially important. Letting us know at least 30 minutes ahead ensures we have time to get your child ready and helps the process run smoothly.

Thank you for planning ahead—it makes a big difference.

Attending Summit High School Football Games

Summit High School is very grateful for the community support of their varsity Football program. Having your middle school student attend a Summit Friday night game is part of that supportive community. With safety as the main concern, Summit is kindly requesting that your student sits with you in the stands/bleachers during the game. Summit appreciates your help with this matter and to follow district-wide rules below when attending future games at any of our schools.

  1. All middle school students must be accompanied by an adult family member in order to enter the game.
  2. Backpacks or skateboards are not allowed in stadiums.
  3. Backpacks and skateboards cannot be stored at stadiums, so leave them at home.
  4. Outside food or drink is not allowed in stadiums.
  5. Students will be expected to sit in the stadium bleachers.
  6. Students are not allowed to re-enter a stadium once they leave.
  7. You can purchase tickets online.

Lost and Found

Our Lost and Found is growing, and we’d love to see these items make their way back home! Students are encouraged to take a peek and check for any missing belongings. The Lost and Found is located at the bottom of the 8th grade steps. Families will also have the opportunity to look through items during Back to School Night on September 25.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

This morning we met as a staff to review what’s going well and what’s on the horizon. We feel like this has been a great start–we hope your student feels the same!

We’re especially impressed by our 8th graders. They’re such a strong group: friendly, sociable, kind. The oldest kids in a building set the tone, and we’re grateful to have this group this year!

See below for important info on morning drop-off protocol (pull ALL THE WAY forward), attendance, and other things like volunteering.

Have a cozy fall weekend with family, and see you Monday!

Sean

REMINDERS! Student Drop-off and Pick-Up

Drivers should…

  • review our Drop-off / Pick-up Map
  • not use NW Lolo Drive, which is for buses only
  • always be safe and courteous to one another
  • follow traffic laws and regulations at all times
  • pull as far forward as possible towards the bike racks at the north side of the school
  • pay attention when approaching campus and while in the parking lot
  • refrain from using cell phone while driving
  • slow it down

Students should…

  • exit and enter vehicle on the curb side
  • be prepared to safely and quickly exit and enter the vehicle at the curb

Attendance Reminders

The easiest way to let us know about your student’s absence is by email at [email protected]. You’re also welcome to use the new ParentVUE option—it’s quick and convenient.

If you’d rather call, you can leave a message at 541-355-7820. For early pickups, a quick heads-up at least 30 minutes in advance really helps us make sure your child is ready on time.

Daily Student Item Deliveries

With school in full swing, we often see an influx of deliveries of items and lunches for students, which can overwhelm our front office staff. To help things run more smoothly, please remind your student to bring everything they’ll need for the school day and after-school activities when they leave home in the morning.

If your student truly needs something delivered during the day, they may come to the attendance office to use the school phone and call to request it. Once the item has been dropped off and your student knows it’s coming, we will not send a note to the classroom. Instead, items will be placed on a cart in the office, and your student can pick them up during passing periods or after school.

Please also note that we cannot accept food or beverage deliveries through services such as DoorDash, UberEats, or similar. Any deliveries of this kind will be turned away.

Thank you so much for your support and cooperation—we appreciate your help in keeping the office running smoothly!

Student Advisory – Chapter 1 Wayfinder

Please check out the info below. Meet Charity and Angie, our two new, amazing staff members in the front office!

I hope your student came back from school with good energy and good stories. We want every student to feel safe, welcomed, and included at PCMS. Next week students will take a campus tour to learn our campus expectations.

District-wide E-bike and E-Scooter Regulation

Just a reminder that as of April 8, 2024 there is a District Regulation in place regarding the use of e-bikes and e-scooters on all Bend-La Pine school campuses for any student under 16 years of age. (See Bend-La Pine Family Spotlight dated March 18, 2024 for more info.) This is a public safety issue, and this policy parallels state law and plain common sense around e-bike and e-scooter ridership.

Pacific Crest will enforce the regulation throughout the school year. Students will first be warned and parents contacted. After the first warning, we will hold the bike at school and only release the bike to the parent.

Important Message from Attendance Office | Student Early Release

Help us help you! If you require your student to be released from school early, it is critical that you contact the Attendance Office at least 30 minutes before you need your student released. You can send an email to [email protected] or call 541-355-7820 to leave a voicemail. Rest assured your message (email & phone) will get picked up within several minutes and a note will be delivered to your student. Walk-ins are not preferred, but happens from time to time. Expect to wait several minutes as we scramble to get your student.

Also, please do not call any other school phone line such as the main office. If you call a phone line other than the Attendance phone line, you will be immediately be transferred to the attendance message line automatically to leave a voicemail. Please also know that we do not have office aides at this time. Therefore, office support staff are required to leave their desks to run notes so please do you best to follow the above request and to plan ahead. We thank for your understanding of this process.

Advisory at Pacific Crest

During advisory this year we will deliver our social-emotional learning lessons. Staff will use the Wayfinder curriculum, which is “research-backed and incorporates meaning-making, critical thinking, and future-ready skills in order to connect classroom learning to the real world.”

One to two days a week, students will have the opportunity to use our  Advisory time for study hall or sustained silent reading. Students will also regularly take part in grade level and school-wide team building activities.

Occasionally, we have extra time in Advisory. We would like to keep students off their iPads and instead offer opportunities for students to play small group games. PCMS is collecting new and lightly used games that can be shared in our classrooms. We would love to have the following games donated at the start of this school year if you are able to do so: deck of cards, Uno, Bananagrams, chess, checkers, Apples to Apples, Battleship, and Jenga. You may drop them off at the PCMS Main Office. Thank you for your consideration!

Math Bypass Testing – Fall Session

On Monday, September 15 — we will hold another Math Bypass testing session. This opportunity is for students who missed the June test due to absence or who are new to our school district. Please note: We will not offer retakes for students who already attempted the test in June. Participation is completely optional. If you would like your student to participate in the Fall assessment.

Register your student HERE if you would like them to take the Fall opportunity.

GET TO & FROM SCHOOL IN A SAFE AND RESPONSIBLE MANNER

Safety is a primary concern this week as students return to school. That begins with all of us doing our part to make sure students have safe ways to travel to and from school, whether by bus or car, bike or scooter, or on foot.

Students and families may experience some congestion and confusion outside schools this week. It will get better! Here’s how DRIVERS can help:

  • Slow down and watch for students making their way to buses, walking or rolling to school, and crossing streets and parking areas.
  • If you are dropping off or picking up your student at school, please plan for some extra time and be patient with the line.

STUDENTS & FAMILIES, here’s what we’d like you to know about getting to school:

SAFE ROUTES: We have fun, safe and convenient walking/biking routes to many of our schools. See all 19 Safe Routes for Bend-La Pine Schools at commuteoptions.org/safe-routes-to-school

ABOUT E-BIKES: Students 16 and older legally may operate e-bikes in Oregon. Anyone under 16 may not, according to state law. Be aware of this and use e-bikes legally and responsibly.

ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET if using a bike, scooter, skateboard or other wheeled device.

WATCH YOUR SPEED! The start of school brings more traffic around our schools and along key routes. Please slow down in high-traffic areas and around pedestrians.

DISMOUNT AND WALK your bike, scooter or skateboard when on school property. We ask that you not ride on school grounds, before or after school.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Pacific Crest Families,

We’re getting close — and each day we’re more excited to welcome your student to PCMS! It’s going to be an awesome year.

On Wednesday, all of our middle and high school teachers gathered at PCMS for the “Standards-Based Instruction and Grading Mini Conference.” I’m really excited about the new ways we’ll be encouraging learning and motivation this year. I also hope it becomes easier for you to understand how your student’s grades are determined.

That said, you won’t notice a huge shift from what we’ve done in the past. PCMS has already been using a 0–4 grading scale for several years. The main change is that grades will now be tied more clearly to a few key “priority standards” — the most essential skills and learning goals for each course. This means you’ll likely see a more detailed gradebook that focuses only on those core areas of learning.

Looking ahead, the entire district will officially move to a standards-based system in the 2026–27 school year. You can find more details in the letter below.

Enjoy the long weekend — and we’ll see you next week! 6th Graders start Wednesday–WOOHOO!

Sean

6th Graders Start Wednesday! 7th & 8th Graders Start Thursday!

Standards-Based Grading Early Adoption

I am writing to share that our school will have teachers participating in an early adoption of Standards-Based Grading (SBG)—a system designed to provide clearer, more meaningful feedback about student learning.  This shift will occur fully at all our sites beginning next fall.

Why Standards-Based Grading?

Traditional grading often combines academic performance with behaviors like participation, effort, or turning work in on time. While those habits are important, they can sometimes obscure what a student actually knows and can do. SBG separates academic achievement from behavior and focuses on mastery of specific learning standards.

What Will This Look Like?

  • Learning Targets: Each assignment or assessment is tied to a specific standard or learning goal.
  • Proficiency Scale: Students are scored on a 0–4 scale:
    • 4 – Advanced: Demonstrates advanced understanding or application.
    • 3 – Proficient: Demonstrates consistent understanding.
    • 2 – Developing: Partial understanding; more practice needed.
    • 1 – Beginning: Beginning to develop understanding.
    • 0 – No Evidence: Not enough information to assess.

Note: A score of 4 does not mean “perfect.” It means the student has shown a deeper or more complex understanding of the standard.

  • Final Grades & GPA: Students will still receive a traditional letter grade and GPA. These will be based on the average of their scores across all standards.

How Will You Stay Informed?

We are committed to keeping you informed and involved:

  • You’ll receive regular updates on your child’s progress toward each standard through Synergy ParentVUE
  • Teachers will share resources to help you interpret scores and understand how they reflect learning.
  • Conferences and communication will focus on growth, strengths, and next steps.

If you want to learn more about our reporting practices, please refer to our district’s policy on grades and credits.

We believe this approach will help students take ownership of their learning, reduce grade anxiety, and better prepare them for future success.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your child’s teacher or myself. We look forward to partnering with you in this exciting shift toward more meaningful assessment.

Note from Nurse Oliver

Families, please take a moment to review the Health & Wellness page on the district website, where you can find information for families about immunizationsmedicationsinjuries, and when to keep students home from school. Remember: all medications at school (even Tylenol) must be provided by the student’s custodial parent or legal guardian and authorized in writing. This is also a good time to ensure your student’s emergency contacts and health information is up-to-date. For example, has your student received their latest Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis) immunization? This is a required immunization for all 7th grade students. Please contact the school registrar, Shawna Junker, to update your address, emergency contacts, or immunizations.

If you have any concerns about your student’s health, especially if your student has a condition requiring accommodations at school, please reach out to our consulting Registered Nurse:

Oliver Tatom, RN [email protected], (541) 355-6922

Transitioning Back to School

Returning to school can feel overwhelming for families. Preparing ourselves as parents is essential to supporting our children. Click here for tips for a smooth transition.

Student Schedules Go Live !

Schedule will be available Saturday, August 30 via StudentVue and ParentVue.

Our student services department is not taking schedule change requests unless there is an error with your child’s schedule. An error would look like accidentally having two identical classes, etc. Specifically, we do not change student schedules for friends or activities. Many of our students have extracurricular activities and we simply cannot accommodate changing schedules for this. Also, classes are still being balanced and all students should check their schedules on the first day of school. We will also be providing each student with a paper copy of their schedule on the 1st day of school. Thank you for your understanding.

Required PE Dress Down Policy & Shirt Purchase

Students will be expected to be dressed down and ready to go by Monday, September 8. PE shirts are required for PE per our Dress Down Policy. The cost per shirt is $9.00. Please go to TouchBase by Monday,9/8 to pay for your student’s PE shirt and select a size. Each student may order one PE shirt and we will try to accommodate the size request as our inventory allows!! Teachers will go over this in class first week of school.

Student Pick-Up & Drop-Off

You may drop your student off as early as 8:35 AM. First period starts at 8:50 AM, but we’d like all students here no later than 8:45 AM. We want everyone to have time to go to their locker to drop off their backpack and get materials for class. Backpacks are not allowed in classrooms.

Attendance Policy

There have been some changes made to the district attendance policy. Please take a few minutes to review the changes by reading through the updated policy, which can be found here: District Attendance Policy .

Tardy Policy

Backpack Policy

Backpack must remain in student lockers. Backpacks impede teachers and students from moving around the classroom, backpacks can contain distracting materials and also serve as a temptation for theft, and they could serve as a storage place for weapons (safety). Students will have plenty of time to go to their lockers between classes to get the materials they need.

Bathroom Policy

We will allow students to use the bathroom during class. Only 1 student will leave class at a time, with a hall pass. Also, students have 5 minutes to use the restroom and return to class. If a student takes more than 5 minutes, the teacher will have a private discussion with the student to remind them of the policy and to ensure that everything is okay. If a student is using the bathroom everyday, and teachers suspect work avoidance or some other issue, teachers will meet with that student privately to discuss concerns and seek more information. A counselor may also have this conversation with the student

Student Spectators and After School Events

We are excited to see students showing up to support our district teams this fall! Your school spirit and energy help make our events special. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all, please review and follow these important expectations:

🎟️ Before You Arrive

  • Adult Supervision Required: All elementary and middle school students must attend with a responsible adult. No drop-offs.
  • Tickets: Digital tickets should be purchased ahead of time at www.bit.ly/sh-athletics.
  • Bring ID: All students must present a school-issued ID to enter (a photo of the ID on a phone is acceptable).
  • Leave These at Home: Backpacks, skateboards, balls, and oversized bags are not allowed. Any bags brought in may be searched.

🏟️ While You’re at the Game

  • Stay In, No Re-Entry: Once inside the stadium (starting 30 minutes before game time), students may not leave and re-enter.
  • Stay in the Stands: Students are expected to remain in designated spectator areas and not roam or loiter.
  • Be a Positive Fan: Show great sportsmanship. Cheer for your team, and be respectful to opponents, officials, and other fans.  OSAA Sportsmanship Guidelines
  • Follow the Rules: The rules during school hours are the same rules after school.  BLS Student Code of Conduct

Host Families Needed for Japanese Exchange Students

We are excited to welcome a group of Japanese exchange students this fall! The students will arrive on Saturday, September 20th, between 7:00–8:00 p.m. and will depart on Thursday, September 25th, at 9:00 a.m.

We are looking for host families to open their homes and share this unique cultural experience. Host families will provide transportation to and from school Monday through Thursday. In addition, we will hold a welcome gathering on Sunday, September 21st to help students and families connect.

If you are interested in hosting or would like more information, please contact me at [email protected].

Thank you for helping us make this exchange a meaningful experience for our students and our visitors!

Warmly,

Principal’s Hello

Hello, Pacific Crest Families!

I’m excited to write my first message of the school year, and to celebrate our 10th year as a school!

I’m Sean Keating, and I’m principal here at PCMS. I taught high school English for 7 years before moving into administration. I’ve been in middle or high school admin now for 12 years. This will be my 7th year as a middle school principal.

My two kids attend Bend-La Pine Schools, and my wife is a mental health therapist. Both my parents were teachers, and my mother-in-law was a teacher. I feel grateful to work in schools, as the rhythm of the year, student laughter, and school culture all bring me great joy.

I’m especially grateful to enter my fourth year with the staff here at PCMS. We have a ton of fun together. We’re a strong team, and I learn so much from them all the time. Your kids are gonna love it here!

Take care, and see you soon!

Sean

Important Construction Roundabout Update

The City of Bend just confirmed that the Skyliner Rd. and NW Skyliners Ranch Rd. will not be completed before the start of the school year. We encourage families to plan ahead and allow extra time for the anticipated increase in travel delays. Please also keep in mind that Summit High School and Pacific Crest dismiss at the same time, which may add to traffic congestion. We appreciate your patience as we work through this challenge together.

In addition to the construction detour, we wanted to inform families that NW Lolo will be gated effective September, 2nd. This is done to help ensure the safety of our students.

Weekly Communications

It is a goal of PCMS to keep families and students up-to-date and well informed. PCMS will continue to update you each Friday via this weekly blog. With that said, due to the start of the school today’s News from the Nest may seem to be an overwhelming amount of information. We highly encourage you take time to read it along with the BLS FamilySpotlight for news and updates throughout the school year.

Student Class Schedules

Student schedules will be accessible via ParentVue and StudentVue on Saturday, August 30. Please note that the counseling department is still making changes to them and will continue to tweak schedules until September 3. Please wait until that time for accurate viewing.

Building a master schedule is an intricate process that takes 100’s of hours of work. Even seemingly minor changes can have a dramatic effect. Due to its complexity, we are not accepting any schedule changes. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

First Day of School Schedules

Throughout the District, the first day of school varies by grade level. Grades 1-6 and grade 9 start Wednesday, September 3. Grades 7-8 and 10-12 start Thursday, September 4. Refer to schedules below. This is to give sixth-graders a full day of orientation without other grades be on campus.

BLS Start and End Times (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday)

  • Elementary:  7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.
  • Middle school: 8:50 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • High school: 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • Three Rivers School: 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Important Note: Schools release 90 minutes early on Wednesdays starting September 10 for staff professional development time. Pacific Crest release time is 2:15 p.m. per our 2025/26 School Schedule.

Transportation Registration

Is your student riding the school bus during the 2025 – 2026 school year? Registration is required, even if your student rode the bus last year.

If you have a student this year who is eligible for transportation, please log into your ParentVUE account and use the Online Registration tool. Select the “Annual Request for Transportation” tile to walk you through the bus rider registration process. If you need assistance with logging into or trouble shooting your ParentVUE account, please email [email protected]

To find out if your student is eligible for transportation, go to bls.fyi/bus.

Transportation App | My Ride K-12

Did you hear the news? Our Transportation Department is using a new and improved rider app for families! It’s called My Ride K-12, and you can download and use it to receive notifications and real-time updates on your student’s bus. Need help? Watch this video for instructions.

Beginning Saturday, August 16, you can log into My Ride K-12 and add your student(s) to your profile using their student ID number and 8-digit date of birth (MMDDYYYY). While you may be able to see bus routes as early as August 16th, bus routes will be finalized and available to view in the app by September 1.

NEW! Athletic Registration – FinalForms

Registration for Pacific Crest MS Fall Sports is open now! We are excited to announce our partnership with FinalForms to provide a streamlined tool to register students for athletics and activities.

If you have a student who will be participating in middle school or high school sports, you will use FinalForms to complete and sign their participation forms. The best part is that FinalForms saves your information from season to season and year to year. You also may review your registration information at any time to verify it’s up to date. You will be asked to sign your forms once every year and after any update. We invite parents and guardians to create their FinalForms account at: bend-or.finalforms.com

You can find instructions here. We hope you’ll like this new tool for getting students ready to play and participate in school activities. We are excited to see them this year on the fields, courts and other competitive venues!

To become a volunteer for athletics, please follow this link to sign up.

School Meal Services

Did you hear the scrumptious news? All schools in the District qualify for the federal Community Eligibility Provision program. All students are eligible to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day. No application is required.

Refer to the School Meals website page to access daily menus including nutritional information and allergens. Parents/guardians of students with special dietary needs may reach out to their school nurse.

Student School Supplies

In Bend-La Pine Schools, all of the materials students need for instruction are provided. Families are welcome to provide personal items such as backpacks, water bottles, and headphones.

If, however, your student would like to choose their own supplies, feel free to purchase them. These are the supplies our teachers typically need students to have:

  • 1 three-ring binder (2.5” or 3”)
  • 1 package of dividers
  • 1 single subject notebook
  • 1 package of three-ring notebook paper
  • 2 lined composition notebooks
  • 1 pencil pouch
  • 1 package of #2 Pencils or mechanical pencil with extra led
  • 1 package of colored pencils
  • 1 pack of pencil cap erasers
  • 1 large pink eraser
  • 2 glue sticks
  • 1 pair of earbuds or headphones

Back-to-School Shopping | District Dress Code

With back-to-school coming up and many of you starting clothes shopping we are asking students and families to take a moment to review and reflect on our district Dress Code Policy. These early conversations will help us be proactive and transparent in understanding school expectations and values, and will set everyone up for success, respect, and safety.

Within the first few weeks of school your student will participate in reviewing a lesson on the Dress Code. We encourage families to be part of this conversation alongside us! It is important that our whole learning community shares a common understanding and interpretation of the Dress Code in order to ensure a safe and inclusive learning environment. Proactive conversation helps avoid misunderstandings, surprises, or unintended harm later. Thank you for your partnership, and happy shopping!

Annual iPad Insurance

It is highly recommended that families purchase the optional annual iPad insurance for $30 for each of their students with a family cap of $60. Insurance should be purchased PRIOR to the iPad being issued. Insurance is effective for the current school year. iPad insurance can be purchased online (at the beginning of the school year). After this period, iPads must be inspected at the school for damage before insurance can be purchased. Please refer to BLS  iPad Insurance webpage for more information.

Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement

Whether you purchase iPad insurance or not, it is extremely important that all parents and guardians review the Acceptable Use of Technology Agreement to be very clear of the responsibilities of technology usage.

BLS Connect

In the case of a weather event that delays or closes schools, or school lockdown or evacuation, families can sign-up to receive text message notifications via BLConnect. A great tool for all families.

Visitor and Volunteer Process

If you plan on visiting your child’s school during school hours, don’t forget your government-issued photo ID. You may be visiting for a concert, to enjoy lunch with your student, or to participate in an IEP meeting. Whatever the reason, safety procedures remain in place to keep our school community safe. All visitors must sign in at school during regular business hours using our Raptor kiosk, the digital sign-in roster. It is critical to know who is in our schools at all times, and no exceptions can be made in this process.

We invite our PCMS community members to volunteer for a number of opportunities throughout the school year. To become a volunteer, please refer to the BLS Volunteer webpage for all the details of become a volunteer.

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Thank you for a wonderful year! We continued to see a lot of growth this year. Our schoolwide expectations for students became stronger. Our student and staff culture felt warm and mutually beneficial. And our teachers continued to collaboratively grow their practice, incorporating more rubrics, using iPads with more discretion, and preparing students more for state tests.

We ended the year on a high note: Students had a ton of fun with a sunny field day filled with laughter, friendly competition, and shave ice!

And of course they succeeded in dunking me in very cold water:

Finally, we thanked our awesome kitchen staff for a great year. They pivoted this year to the district’s free-lunch-for-everyone policy, and did a superb job. Next year we’re going to be the first middle school to pilot a sustainable silverware program, replacing our plasticware in the cafeteria. Wish us luck!

Have an awesome summer! See you around town!

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Happy final Friday of the 2024-25 schoolyear! We’re almost there!

Today we had our final all-school assembly of the year. It was super fun! We said goodbye to our 8th graders, presented a check to Bethlehem Inn from our students’ fundraising efforts, held a raffle for all students with zero unexcused tardies, and played staff-versus-students dodgeball. Staff won again–two years in a row! (Shoutout to the 6th graders who joined our team.)

As I’ve mentioned before, we tried a few new things this year to get our students to take our state tests more seriously. State test results are a major source of public-facing school and district data, and these tests represent what our students can do. If our students don’t try their best, the data is meaningless.

This year we dedicated a couple lessons to preparing for the tests, explained why the tests matter, and added the test score to our grade reports (even though the state test score does not affect the final course grade). I’m happy to say that these efforts paid off, and I hope this ushers in a new culture at PCMS where we take state tests more seriously. Here are the overall scores compared to last year. The number is the percent proficient (an overall score of 3 or 4):

Thank you for supporting this culture change with us. Please check your ParentVue to see your own student’s scores. For a more detailed score breakdown, you can email your student’s teachers. These one-pager reports should also appear in your ParentVue later this summer.

Have a great weekend! Three more days for 8th graders and four more days for 6th and 7th graders!

Sean

Countdown to the Last Day of School

PCMS Gives Back!

Principal Keating with WEB Leader check presenters & Caroline Greenlaw from Bethlehem Inn

Once again and in the spirit of kindness, our WEB Leaders, in partnership with our parent group (PCCO), held three fundraising social events that raised a significant amount of money for this year’s beneficiary, Bethlehem Inn. At today’s assembly a check for $1,200 was presented to Caroline Greenlaw, Development Manager for Bethlehem Inn. Of course these funds could not be raised without the participation of the entire PCMS student body, staff, families and volunteers. Thank you!

Shout Out to Sources of Strength Peer Leaders!

Thank you and congrats to our 2024-25 Sources of Strength Peer Leaders – 7th grade leaders trained to be “connectors to help” and “agents of change” at our school, creating a culture of belonging and promoting positive mental health!  Together, this year they created opportunities for connection and celebrated everyone’s strengths through interactive campaigns.

In the month of May, Sources of Strength focused on a Generosity campaign, which included three different ways to practice generosity.  The first was a generosity challenge where students could complete a daily act of generosity to be entered into a raffle at the end of the month. The second was for the 6th grade students. Peer Leaders facilitated an advisory lesson where they taught students what a nice compliment sounded like, and then helped students make a card for every student in the class with a nice compliment on it. The compliments were then collected and turned into a poster to be put up on each classroom door. The third was showing gratitude to positive mentors. The whole student body wrote thank yous to their teachers. The Peer Leaders collected the notes and made giant thank you cards for all the teachers in the building. Overall, 584 students participated in the “Month of Generosity,” spreading kindness and building connection in our community.  Thank you to our dedicated and passionate Peer Leaders, and to the amazing adult advisors who support them!

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Our standardized test scores are trickling in from the state, and we’re seeing big growth so far on every test in every grade. Thank you for talking to your students about taking these tests seriously.

These scores represent our individual students, school, and district, and we want this public-facing scores to accurately reflect what our kids can do and the high-quality teaching we have at Pacific Crest. Next week I’ll send the data for you to see.

A big shout-out to our performing arts teachers: Sydney Harms and Sterling Roberts. At the end of each semester, these two teachers put the results of their teaching on display. Many of our kids had never been musical before, and it’s extraordinary to see our students’ growth.

Finally, this morning we had our staff versus student volleyball game, where a handful of willing, able, and brave staff members played their hardest against the 7th grade champion team. It wasn’t pretty, but we held our own and only lost by a few points!

Enjoy the beautiful Bend weekend.

Math Bypass Testing

During the first week of June, sixth and seventh grade students who are interested in bypassing a level of Mathematics instruction will have the opportunity to take a bypass assessment. The bypass assessment is not available for students in 8th grade to bypass high school courses as these courses earn credit toward graduation.

This assessment will evaluate students’ understanding of key concepts in Number and Operations as well as Algebra and Algebraic Thinking, in order to determine whether they have mastered the skills taught in the grade level they wish to skip.

Please complete this Registration Form to let us know you would like your child to take the bypass assessment.

At PCMS, the bypass test will take place on Wednesday, June 4, starting at 9AM . Test results will be shared within a few days, and families will then be guided through the next steps based on the outcome.

Healthy Schools | Summer Break Support

Summer break is almost here! While this can be a restful break, we know there can still be hard times that come up when extra support is needed.

There are many resources still available, even to graduates, during the break. Care Solace, YouthLine, and your local School Based Health Centers are just a few available all summer long!  Click here for information about local resources and hotlines.

Important: Lost & Found

It is Spring and we have an overabundance of unclaimed lost and found items. PCMS does not take responsibility for misplaced or lost items. On Friday, June 13, all unclaimed items will be donated to local charity. We would greatly appreciate families reminding their students to check lost and found regularly until the end of the school year to possibly find something that belongs to them. Thanks!

Principal’s Hello

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

This week we’re finishing state tests in math classes. We will show you your student’s scores once they become available. As you may remember, we wanted to include the state test on the report cards, but we are unable to do that (unfortunately).

Please review the state test score with your student. It’s a great conversation starter about their academic engagement, self-identity as a scholar, and potential pathways for the future.

Our 8th graders enjoyed a planetarium show today in science class, and our 7th graders began the (very popular) skateboarding unit in PE.

We keep trucking along here as a staff and embrace all the possibilities that dwell within a three-day weekend. Enjoy it!

Principal’s Message

Dear Golden Eagle Families,

Happy Friday! I’m so proud of our arts teachers this week. Ms. Cramer hosted some cool arts field trips downtown, and our other arts teachers hosted Featured Artists Night, which was a mixed media extravaganza of music, print, and sculpture.

I also hope you saw the Family Bulletin and this month’s Champion for Students Award. Carey Kraybill, our Design and Modeling teacher, won this award and was presented the award by Superintendent Steve Cook. Carey’s commitment to real-world design problems and assistive technology speaks to the heart of 21st century learning and represents the best of PCMS.

As we move closer to Memorial Day, I want to recognize all our teachers who, at mile 20 of the marathon, continue to do outstanding work for our kids. If you didn’t reach out to offer your support during Teacher Appreciation Week, please consider doing so now.

Thanks for being on the journey with us–we’re almost there!
