ASCA Legal and Ethics Webinar: Suicidal Risk and Informational Gathering
Check out this webinar from ASCA this week.
Here are the learning objectives:
- Discuss court cases that inform the school counselor’s work with students who are suicidal
- Identify ways to better protect students, including using the newly released Suicide Risk Assessment Replacement Toolkit
- Explain best practices, including relaying information to parents/guardians to give them the best chance of keeping their child safe
While we will still use our BLS Suicide Risk Screening Process, we thought this webinar was informative as we look to update our Adi’s Act policies.
COHC Mini- Grants
Below see information from Bruce Abernathy (Grant Writer) at the Ed Center:
The District was quite successful last year in applying to Central Oregon Health Council (COHC) as part of their Mini Grants program. I estimate we secured close to 20 grants ranging from $1,500 up to $5,000 to help furnish various BRYT Rooms around the District.
- Applications are due the 25th of the month, through an online portal, and schools still eligible to apply for up to $5,000, but I strongly recommend NOT going after that full amount unless you are a new school and have not already received a COHC grant for your BRYT Program. I think they are trying to “spread the wealth” a bit.
- From April 1, 2022, to December 31, 2024, organizations (i.e. BLPSD) may receive up to a maximum of $30,000 in mini-grant funding across all workgroups, as funds are available. I know that Ponderosa BRYT was just awarded $5,000 so I think that means as a District we have $25,000 left so there might need to be some prioritization on our part before applications are submitted.
- COHC really likes to see organizations that are “learning communities” so rather than just saying, “We need more X and Y” try to weave in “Because of what we learned during our first year of implementation, we have determined that we need the following…..”
- Mini-Grant projects must address specific metrics that are tied to specific Workgroups. Unlike last year when all six workgroups offered Mini-Grants, now only two of them are relevant for BRYT: 1) Behavioral Health – Increase Access and Coordination and 2) Upstream Prevention – Promotion of Individual Well-Being. Proposals should be geared to one or more of the following highlighted metrics.
Behavioral Health – Increase Access and Coordination
- Increase availability of behavioral health providers in marginalized areas of the region
- Increase timeliness and engagement when referred from primary care to specialty behavioral health
- Standardize screening processes for appropriate levels of follow-up care across services
Upstream Prevention – Promotion of Individual Well-being
- Increase letter name recognition at kindergarten
- Increase third-grade reading proficiency
- Increase the proportion of pregnancies that are planned
- Increase two-year-old immunization rates
- Establish a regional measure for belonging and measure yearly
Reporting – there is a final report due at the end of this school year after the project has ended
Assistance with writing and submitting – I am happy to help anyone in either of these processes – Bruce Abernathy (Grant Writer)
