Reminder for Secondary Counselors (MS/HS)
Grades have posted!
Just a reminder to run your D/F list to follow up on students academic/future plans as well as be part of the planning for school-wide data driven tiered 2 interventions.
As a counseling department, it is recommended to approach the data with a tiered procedure. Things we may want to consider as a counseling department:
- Do we want to focus on core areas or all Fs?
- Does the data vary by subject? By grade level? Underserved populations?
- Discuss school-wide data in MTSS meetings
- What tiered interventions are have available to students? What can we do to support students?
- How do we tackle our lists as counselors as academic support is part of our role?
- Example:
- 1 or more F’s in a core subject gets an at-risk letter home
- Letter could include:
- information about implications of receiving an F
- resources in our school that are available, which should includes encouraging parents/caregivers to reach out directly to teacher
- Letter could include:
- 2 or more Fs in a core subject gets a “check in” from a counselor
- 3 or more Fs gets a phone call home and meeting with counselor
- 4 or more Fs gets a phone call home and student study team meeting (bring all shareholders to meeting)
- 1 or more F’s in a core subject gets an at-risk letter home
- Example:
This is just an example and will vary by school, but it is best practice to have some formalized and data driven process to approach our at risk D/F kids.

Classroom Law Project Scholarship
We have an annual $10,000 scholarship for any student who did ANY of our programs during their high school experience (even using our curated current events or election materials counts). It’s not as well known out here so I’m trying to spread the word. Thanks for helping me reach our counselors!

Youth Led Opportunities through Deschutes County
From Deschutes County Youth Engagement Coordinator, Lisa Brown:
Thanks for continuing to create a community of inclusion and partnership between BLS and Health Services. I truly appreciate it.
Here are the lists I’ve created for student opportunities. My top priorities are:
1. School Health Advocacy Day- Feb 28th– virtual event for students to learn advocacy skills AND speak to legislators!- the focus is on schools with a health center, but Summit seems to be very interested, so I will be asking to include them as well. This is VERY IMPORTANT because OHA does not have enough money to continue the same funding for SBHC’s as last year and Mosaic could lose $48000 in funding without legislation.
2. Youth Summit for Health planning Committee– I am working with Crook, Jefferson, and Warm Springs with a grant from COHC to have a two day summit for youth health and WE NEED student leaders for the planning committee. We meet the third Tuesday of each month 4:30-5:30.
Feel free to forward to any student leaders or post up at school sites! There’s a QR code that all leads to an interest form.
Here is the link to all of the flyers and information regarding the opportunities.
