Welcome Back from the Hawks! I asked Stace and Anne Marie if I could share this fun video they sent out to their students this week.

To Do:

Here is the link to the COVID-19 guidance doc cabinet has been preparing for you. Hopefully, you will find this information helpful as we plan for the coming weeks. The document is a DRAFT and not ready to be shared with your staff. Please review this document prior to our HS Admin WebEx meeting on Monday morning at 9:00. We are looking for feedback, additional questions to answer and suggestions from our principals to improve our work before putting the document in a more usable format.

Student Teacher Placements: I mentioned earlier in the week that we have entered into an agreement with George Fox to develop a BLPS “Grow our Own” program. This includes placing/mentoring student teachers to support our profession. I sent a link from Kris Molitor, our George Fox connection explaining that we need placements for five student teachers beginning in January. She reached out to us and shared a corrected doc requesting those placements for the August-December (not January). Two of the five student teachers are requesting BSHS and PBMS. The other three still need placements and two are sped teachers (the need for sped teachers is HIGH) and one Art teacher. Please consider mentoring one of these student teachers at your school.

Standards-Based Grading Synergy Training: Several of you and members of your staff have expressed interest in standards-based grading in Synergy. Becky Rewalt is facilitating training for this on April 16 at 11:00. Here is the link to information more from Becky. If you are interested, please register for Synergy 2021 Grade Book Standards Demo on Apr 16, 2020, 11:00 AM PDT at https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/1667261355448008974

Information:

Welcome to Ellen Jones! Jody McBride has resigned from her position in our office and will be moving to the LA area where her husband accepted a job. Just prior to school closures we had interviews to fill her position (prior to our hiring freeze) and am thrilled to have Ellen Jones hired to fill this spot. Ellen worked at CMS for five years, about ten years ago. It is a bit awkward to begin a new job that supports schools when there are no kids in them, but I wanted you to know Ellen’s name and know that you can reach out to her via email if you have any needs that she may be able to help with.

College Admissions: We are learning that colleges and universities are adjusting their admissions requirements in response to nationwide K-12 closures. Here is an article from the LA Times about the University of California system accepting P/NP grades and suspending the standardized test requirements. Here is a similar article from EdSource.

****************************************************************************************

Enrollment Guidance: During our meeting yesterday I mentioned that Rachel Mavis sent out enrollment guidance to our registrars. I am including it here for your reference. Yes, we are enrolling new students!

****************************************************************************************

FREE resource for World Languages: Cate Hill let us know that Rosetta Stone is currently being offered for free. If you or your World Language teacher is interested in learning more, please reach out to Cate for more information.

****************************************************************************************

From Art Witkowski at ODE for Health and Biomedical Sciences: I hope this email is finding you well.  Our team is busy preparing resources and examples to help you with “Distance Learning.” This will be the first of continuing communications will include resources for all CTE clusters however I wanted to pass on an invitation to attend a free day of online workshops just for Health Sciences teachers.  These are scheduled for this Saturday starting at 7am.  I’ll try and record them and add them to a resource area we are developing for CTE.

Child Abuse Reporting: There has been some media coverage around the potential for abuse of youth to increase during this time of stay at home isolation. Because students are not coming to school, the number of referrals for abuse has already seen a large drop in Deschutes County. In an effort to simplify the process for making a DHS/Law Enforcement referral, would you please remind your staff that they are still mandatory reporters, and share this link to the reporting form in the Portal, where a new fillable form can also be completed and sent to Ellen Jones (see below).

****************************************************************************************

From Becky Rewalt: Many of you are asking your educational assistants to assist with contacting students and families. They do have read-only access to student information in Synergy, even if they have not attended the training.  If folks find that they are having trouble getting information or with their access please have them submit a helpdesk ticket and we will work to get it resolved quickly.

****************************************************************************************

From Ben Hansen: If you have classified staff who need a laptop to work from home, your site tech can repurpose student laptops (or other inventory) for this purpose.

****************************************************************************************

Teacher emails to students and families: We have heard a few times from parents regarding a request for a bit more identification when receiving emails. As you can imagine, emails from school staff are coming fast and furious this week and parents are not always able to identify the school or course that the correspondence is coming from (especially if there is more than one student in the home). Please pass this request on to your teachers: When sending an email to family/student, please put school initials (e.g. LPHS, Realms HS) and course title (e.g. Lit and Comp 1 or US History) in the subject line.  It sounds like this would help alleviate some of the anxiety around learning from home.

****************************************************************************************

WebEx support: Our Instructional Coach Team has been hard at work preparing helpful information related to WebEx. WebEx student guidelines can be found on this page, and they will be shared with you as part of the BLS Guidelines (I shared the link above). (They’ll be in folder #7 – Student Connectivity). Teachers do have the capability of temporarily “expelling” a student from a WebEx. Here are written instructions, here is a video, and here is a short video (54 sec.)

A note about inaccurate emails from IT: As we send out more district-wide emails, we are learning that more than 700 families that have faulty or blocked email addresses. Because email is an important tool, particularly at this time, we want to try to help get more of our families connected.

Deby Bryson is reaching out to office managers with school-specific information of families with bad/blocked email addresses, with the hopes that we can reach out to those folks to get updated contact information if possible. Call Deby with questions.

COVID Info: There is a great deal of information coming in about the COVID-19 situation and because our reality changes quickly, it can be difficult to keep track. Here is a document of COVID-19 Links to important state and district documents so you can access information related to this pandemic in one place.

As you know, directives from ODE changed on Monday evening around how instruction would be viewed and graded. Here is the ODE’s new language around Learning for All – full document, as well as Learning for All – Summary which contains the highlights.
