Principal’s Hello

Hey, everyone! I hope you had an awesome week and will have some good family time together this weekend.

In a half hour, we’re starting our assembly to introduce our Sparrow, Enzo. We are fundraising this year to help Enzo and his family with their medical bills. Sparrow Clubs create community partnerships where kids help other kids in need. They’ve raised more than $7M and supported more than 1,400 kiddos over the years.

We’re proud to be a part of this program and feel that it speaks to our school mission of helping to cultivate engaged citizens.

Take care, everyone.

Sean

UPDATE: Golden Eagle Early Morning Gym

We will not be hosting Morning Gym next week due to lack of coverage on Tuesday, 1/31 and school not being in session on Thursday, 2/2.

Words of gratitude! We appreciate all drivers for keeping it slow and safe, efficient and friendly in our parking lot, and at the red curb during drop-off and pick-up. Thanks for pulling up a far as possible before your students exit or enter your vehicle. As well as stopping and giving pedestrians the right-of-way.

Attendance Reporting Reminder

If you need to report your student as late, absent or leaving school early, please call the Attendance line directly at (541) 355-7820 to leave a message OR you can email [email protected]. Note that voicemails are checked every 5 minutes. Also, please give the attendance office at least a 1/2 hour notice whenever possible when needing to pull your student out of school early for the day or for an appointment. Make it simple by adding the above phone number to your phone contacts.

Sparrow Enzo is in the House!

Golden Eagles had the pleasure of meeting Enzo, his family and hearing his story at our Sparrow assembly today. Sometime this weekend, take a few moments to ask your children to share what they experienced and how they can help support him and his family in partnership with several community businesses over the next several months. Some upcoming fundraising includes Valentine’s dance, Val-o-Grams sales and Lucky for Enzo Pot of Gold coin collection. A dedicated email will be sent out to our community early this week with more info.

Upcoming Valentine’s Day Dance

Our WEB Leaders, in partnership with PCCO, will be hosting our second dance/social on Friday, February 10 from 4:00 – 6:00 PM which benefits our Sparrow, Enzo. We thank everyone who contributed to the success of our last dance by donating items and/or giving your time to set-up, supervise and clean-up. For those who would like to contribute to this dance, please look for an email early this coming week with more information.

It was so successful, we are asking again! Please feel free to upload your images to this shared folder. When you do, title the image with the people in it and the activity. For example: “cassidycookandfamilyfishing.jpg” or “8thgradeboysbasketball.jpg”.

  • 8th graders!
  • ALL Fall sports
  • Performing Arts
  • Out-of-School Community and Family
  • And “Funny Photos of Friends”

Purchasing a Yearbook for Your Student(s)

These high quality yearbooks are published by Herff Jones and include hard covers and 40+ full color pages packed full of memories. A yearbook costs $20.00 and should be purchased online via our TouchBase payment system. Yearbook Donations

As mentioned several weeks ago, one of our goals this year is to rekindle the middle school experience. We believe, yearbooks are a big part of the middle school social experience for kids. This year, we want every single student to have a yearbook placed in their hand at the end of the school year. We appreciate any support you can provide. The suggested donation is $20. Donors who give at the Golden Circle level (between $20 – $30) and donations at the Eagle level (between $30 – $50) will receive name recognition in the yearbook. We appreciate your understanding of PCMS’s equity goal to insure all students enjoy taking home a book of middle school memories. Donate via our online TouchBase payment system.

Principal’s Hello!

Hello, Parents and Guardians!

Happy new year! We enjoyed a great week back with your students. It’s Friday already?! Our students didn’t skip a beat and fell right into our practiced routines.

I hope you all had a restful time with family. It’s good to be back in our building full of zest and middle school joy!

Sean

Crosswalk Care

Please be careful driving around before and after school, especially at our crosswalks. We had a student hit by a car yesterday. (The student sustained a broken foot.) Our before- and after-school supervision is centered around campus, and we cannot watch the roads in the neighborhoods. That’s where you come in! Thank you for your help and vigilance keeping our students safe while crossing the street.

Early Eagle Open Gym

Early Eagle Open Gym Basketball is back! Doors will open from 7:15-7:30am on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning January 10th, ending the week prior to spring break. The open gym will close it’s school doors open at 8:15am. PCMS Athletics is sponsoring this program and will provide basketballs. Please review these rules with your student prior to dropping them off at school.

Food Delivery Services (Door Dash, etc.)

We have issues with students using their phones to order meals for delivery to school. First, whether students are ordering for themselves or for a group of friends, often the order is placed within the classroom hence disrupting their teacher and going against our “phones off and away during the day” policy. Second, the delivery service arrives at PCMS often without last names which can create a time consuming and frustrating task for our office support team. Third, constant deliveries from an outside establishment creates an inequity or exclusion situation amongst our students which may cause a need for students to meet with their counselor.

We know that from time-to-time guardians will forget to send their student to school with a lunch. If you are not able to deliver the meal, we highly encourage students to utilize our onsite cafeteria even if there isn’t money in their account, they can go through food line and their account will be charged. Please review this option with your student.

Girls Basketball

The Girls Basketball season is about to begin with practices starting after school next week. We have asked Bend Parks and Recreation to keep registration open through this weekend. We are a few players short for the two 7/8 grade combined teams and could also add a few more 6th grade athletes, so please sign up HERE if interested!

Youth Truth Survey

Our annual Youth Truth survey helps us track student, family, and staff opinions about academics, school culture, and other important topics related to school life.

We will be administering these surveys in January. If you do not want your student participating, please click the link below.

Are You Snow Ready?

Snow is here! Now is the time to make sure that you are in the know for all things SNOW.

Are you signed up for text messaging that will tell you about school closures or 2-hour delays? If not, it’s not too late to sign up! Just pop over to BLConnect (click here) and complete the form. Your phone number will then be identified for receiving text messages regarding your school. (This includes any emergency broadcasts as well, should that ever be needed.)

Snow can cause transportation delays as well. Our Transportation department is very good at sending out voice and email communications regarding any delays or changes to routes. However, that can only happen if you have your parent contact information updated in our student database. Please take a moment to log into ParentVUE and update your phone or email so that we can reach you.

Should you receive communication from Transportation that your student will be on a Snow Route, you can find the snow route information at THIS WEBPAGE.

You can find more general information on the Delays, Early Release or School Closures webpage.

Principal’s Hello

Hello, Golden Eagle families!

We finished another strong week here at Pacific Crest Middle School. We celebrated our singers and musicians at our winter concert, opened our Gold Mine store for the second time, completed a successful fundraiser, hosted an exchange student from Japan, and watched exciting World Cup action on the big screen during lunch.

This is a fun, dynamic place to be every day. I hope your student feels the same!

Warmly,

Sean

2022/23 Yearbooks Purchase Update

As mentioned a few weeks ago, this year one of our goals is to rekindle the middle school experience. This year, we want every student to have a yearbook placed in their hand at the end of the school year. We hope you would consider helping us do that.

We will be sending out a dedicated email this Monday, December 12 with further instructions on how you can 1) purchase a yearbook for your student; 2) purchase a yearbook for another student; 3) get listed on our Golden Eagle page in the yearbook; and 4) for 8th grade families only, how to purchase a customizable celebration square for your 8th grade student as they move onto high school.

The students will be showcasing their projects on Thursday, 12/15 from 5:30-6:30 in the 7th grade classrooms. Students and families are invited to join us for this fun event.

Principal’s Hello

Today we open our Gold Mine store, our school-wide positive behavioral intervention, where students can spend virtual money (golden feathers) they earn for being a positive presence here at school.

I personally handed out a few golden feathers this week to students who, without asking, helped our school remain beautiful and trash free.

Our students and staff hit the ground running after break. I’ve enjoyed observing all the great teaching and learning in our classrooms.

We’ve also had fun watching World Cup matches at lunchtime. The kids are into it!

Have a great weekend!

Covid-19 & General Illness Guidelines

We have noticed an increase of illnesses over the past several weeks. Our Health Room data shows that all too often students with Covid-19 or other illness symptoms will come to school in the morning and within an hour or two students arrive in the Health Room not feeling well. Students are immediately assessed and in most cases guardians are notified to come pick up their student. During their very brief time at school unfortunately they expose their illness to many others.

To keep staff, students and families healthy, the district has provided these very important guidelines to follow: “Should I Send My Child to School Today?“. Also we want to re-share the districts Health and Wellness Webpage for more information. We ask that you assess your child first thing in the morning and do not send them to school per these guidelines. To contact our Attendance Office please email [email protected] or leave a voice message at (541) 355-7820. The health of your student and others is important to us and we appreciate your help.

WEB Leader Hot Cocoa Sparrow Fundraiser Help Request

The chill of winter has arrived! In partnership with PCCO, our WEB Leaders are hosting a morning HOT COCOA BAR for our students and staff the week of Monday, 12/12 – 12/16 to raise funds for our Sparrow, who will be introduced to our community in next weeks’s newsletter.

If you wish to help make this a successful fundraiser to support our Sparrow, we could use your help with providing some supplies. Click here to sign up! Items should be delivered to the main office by Wednesday, December 7th. PCCO and Web Leaders are sending you a huge THANK YOU!

Food & Toy Drives Update

We appreciate those who have supported The Giving Plate Food and Toy Drives. Both drives end this Wednesday, December 7, so there is plenty of time to drop off donations that will bring joy to many this holiday season! As of today, the 6th graders are in the lead and have donated 236 food items, but the current total from all grades is over just over 50o items. The winning grade level will receive a treat prior to Winter Break.

PCMS Athletics Update

Wrestling registration is now open! Golden Eagle wrestling creates opportunities for young athletes to try wrestling for the first time, enhance the skills of returning wrestlers, and produce a pipeline of athletes for the Summit High School wrestling program. Having started his career in education as a coach (but not a wrestling coach), Coach Toso has always believed that the work ethic and discipline instilled into wrestlers benefit students not only as athletes but as students as well. Wrestling is open to all students of all grades and experience levels! Click here to register.

Athletes and parents/guardians interested in learning more about the PCMS Wrestling program and upcoming season are welcome to attend a virtual meeting with Coach Toso on Thursday, December 14th from 6-7pm. Virtual Meeting Link

Girls Basketball registration is now open! The middle school basketball program is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th grade girls. This program emphasizes skill development, maximum participation, good sportsmanship and fun. Athletes are placed on teams according to the middle school they attend. Principal’s Hello – Behavior at The Grove

I’ve heard now a few times from The Grove about student behavior. They are seeing students standing on tables, running in large groups, throwing food, leaving trash, and disobeying and disrespecting the security staff.

I know this isn’t just PCMS kids. But we’d be naive to think our kids didn’t, at times, exhibit some of these behaviors while unsupervised.

Please help me, help The Grove, and help your kids. The Grove is our shared public commons. It requires us to think about others and not just ourselves, to behave in a way that does not hurt the peace or freedom of others, and to be good stewards of a shared public space.

This week I spoke to all our 8th graders in Mr. Colt’s Health classes. Our oldest students set the tone, the culture, and the example for our whole school. I asked them to think about “integrity” and about making the right decision, even when nobody is watching (especially when nobody is watching). Mr. Colt is also creating a project in Health class about this issue.

Thank you, as always, for your teamwork and support. I am grateful for you and thankful for our partnership. Have a great Thanksgiving break!

Principal’s Hello

Hey, families! Thank you for another great week! This week we celebrated Halloween and enjoyed a super fun spirit week.

We also reminded our students of our electronic device policy. Please ask your student about it.

The number one rule of this policy is that cell phones are silent and away from 8:50 to 3:45. Why? Cell phones disrupt the learning environment, create conditions for bullying and harassment, and are constantly lost and broken.

Our kids are, by and large, doing great with this policy this year. As an entire staff, we are all working together as a united front to hold the line on this expectation while, at the same time, keeping things positive.

Yearbooks

This year, we are trying to rekindle the middle school experience. That’s one of our top three goals.

For us, yearbooks are a big part of the middle school social experience for kids. This year, we want every single student to have a yearbook placed in their hand at the end of the year.

To do that, we need your help. Yearbooks are $20 each, but we’d like you to consider the following:

–$40 buys your student’s book and a yearbook for a student who cannot afford one.

–$50 buys the above, plus your name listed on our Golden Circle page.

8TH GRADE ONLY OPTIONS:

–$75 buys the above, plus a small, customizable Celebration Square (1/8 page)

–$100 buys the above, plus a large, customizable Celebration Square (1/4 page)

We’ll be sharing more information soon, including a link for purchasing a book and submitting a donation if you choose. We just wanted you to be aware of this new equity model of yearbook purchasing.

Affinity Group Starting Soon

At Pacific Crest, clubs are for students, by students – meaning that we have clubs that are born out of student interest. There are a few exceptions to this rule, as the Yearbook Club, National Junior Honor Society, and PRISM clubs are adult-led in order to provide some continuity from year-to-year. In this same way, Pacific Crest would like to offer an Affinity Circle group for our students of color. This Affinity Circle group will focus on providing a safe and supportive place for students to discuss their shared experiences. If this is applicable to your student, please talk with them about whether or not they would like to be a part of an Affinity Circle group, or if you would like to be contacted for more information please click here.

PCMS Gives Back our Bend Community

Now more than ever, ’tis the giving season! Every year our WEB Leaders offer our students and families options to give to those in need during the holiday season. We are partnering with the Giving Plate with two open giving options this year starting on Wednesday, November 9 and ending on Wednesday, December 7.

The first option is a “non-perishable” food drive which serves local residents in Bend. Below is a list of needed items. Donations will be collected at PCMS in the Upper Nest starting this Wednesday. The grade level that collects the most food items will receive a surprise!

The second option is to donate to the Giving Plate’s Jingle Christmas; bringing hope to the holidays. The Jingle Store is an annual, free community event where kids can come and “shop” for gifts to give to those they love. Here are some helpful practical shopping tips. There will be a specific collection container for donated gifts in the PCMS Upper Nest starting on Wednesday, November 9. You may also donate directly to one of these locations. No need to wrap your gift donations. There will be a wrapping station at the Jingle Christmas event on December 16 & 17 at the Riverhouse Event Center in Bend.

Principal’s Hello

Hey, everyone!

I am so pleased that last Friday’s Monster Mash Dance was well attended and so much fun for our students. This was our first dance in a few years, and it went really well. Our WEB Leaders, with help from our PCCO, did a great job planning, setting up and working the event. I appreciate those of you in the PCMS community who donated decorations, food or came in to decorate and/or chaperone the event. We can’t wait for the next dance.

Remember our Halloween costume guidelines for Monday. (See below.)

We’ve had a great week. Students are following our routines and are, by and large, treating each other well.

Spirit Week

Get your SPIRIT on next week! We are looking forward to students and staff dressing up thematically to show their school spirit.

  • Monday, 10/31: Halloween Costumes
  • Tuesday, 11/1: PJ Day
  • Wednesday, 11/2: School Colors
  • Thursday, 11/3: Twin Day
  • Friday, 11/4: Neon Day

When selecting costumes for the week, we are directing students to put some thought into their costumes to avoid costumes that are offensive, mock cultural or religious symbols or beliefs, trivialize human suffering or oppression. For more info, see these guidelines. Additionally, the increasingly popular blow-up costumes are not allowed, as they are too large. Students not in line with our expectations will have to call home to change clothes.
