Principal’s Hello!

Happy sunny Friday, PCMS families!

I started my day meeting with some awesome parents at the third and final principal’s coffee. (I plan to continue these next year; they’ve been great.) One of the things we talked about was creating more opportunities for parents to build community via the school.

To that end, I’m excited for some ideas we will try next year to build this community. As you know, my family and I are new to Bend, and y’all have been so warm and welcoming to us. I want our school community to serve that same function for as many folks as possible. Let me know if you have your own ideas!

Another thing I’ll mention is that we’ve been talking a lot about iPads lately. Some teachers are attempting to utilize iPads in a more secondary, supportive role rather than the sole pipeline of instruction. We’re finding that constant screen time may be inhibiting deep, authentic relationships between students and between students and staff. (How can I build a relationship with you if I’m only relating to my screen?)

To that end, check out the new research on social media. It’s scary, but also empowering, because now we know for sure that social media has a direct, negative effect on our children. There were so many confounding factors before that researchers have now been able to isolate.

Finally, I want to personally put a plug in for Carrie Bonnet. (See the section below.) I attended a talk by Carrie at the public library and was so impressed by her presentation. I thought you all would find benefit from it as well, especially as we fight the “summer slide” that occurs between academic school years.

I wish you all a sunny weekend outside with people you love!

Sean

Join Us!

Parents and guardians are welcome to attend a presentation on “Introduction to Executive Function – Be the Boss of your Brain” this Thursday, May 4, 2023 at 6:30 PM at PCMS .

Do you (or someone you love) struggle with things like time management, self-monitoring, planning, and organization? Then this conversation is for you! Carrie Bonnett, Executive Function coach, veteran teacher and PCMS parent, will offer an introduction to these cognitive skills – the ones that help us GET THINGS DONE. You will learn why this is harder for some people than others, what does the brain science say about it and how we can support our students (and ourselves) – even during the summer!

School Snack Bars are Opening Again

This is how it works:

  • Snack foods have been approved to meet the smart snack guidelines.
  • Students can use their accounts to purchase items as long there is a sufficient amount of money in their account to cover the purchase.
  • Parents and/or Guardians can request that the student’s meal account be flagged for no snack bar purchases by calling the school kitchen.

If you have any questions, contact PCMS Nutrition Department at (541) 355-7840.

District Guidance Regarding Walkouts

We have seen information on social media suggesting that some students in our community plan a school walkout on Monday to demonstrate around the issue of gun violence. While we have not confirmed that a student-led protest is planned at a specific school, in light of the student walkouts a few weeks ago, we want to share our expectations and guidance around these events.

We are always available to meet with student leaders to discuss productive and safe avenues for issues they wish to address through demonstrations or other means. This includes scheduling time for students to walk out to a safe place on campus, then return to class without penalty.

It’s important to know that if students leave campus, they are no longer under the supervision of school staff, and they will be marked unexcused absent.

Students who have unexcused absences may not participate in after-school practices, events, or competitions on the day of the absence. Students who fail to follow the direction of a teacher or administrator to return to class or to remain on campus may be subject to disciplinary measures. We will maintain regular instruction for all students who remain in classrooms.

The district supports students’ right to free speech and assembly. These rights are guaranteed under the First Amendment. Students do not have a right to disrupt school functions or violate school policies. It is not appropriate for school staff to encourage or discourage student participation in protest or demonstration, nor should staff participate themselves.

Principal’s Hello

Dear PCMS Families,

I hope you had a great week! It was another dynamic week of learning for us here at school. We started forecasting for next year’s elective classes. We practiced, during advisory, how to be upstanders. And we learned how to be a creative force for good from local poet, activist, and teacher, Mosley Watta.

I was out of the building for most of the week at the Coaching For Educational Equity conference, and I am feeling energized. The conference renewed my internal commitment to lead collaboratively with our teachers and staff to create a school where all kids feel included and valued.

Have a lovely weekend. See you soon!

Sean

Respectful Language

This week the school district sent a communication home about respectful language. If you have yet to read this communication, I encourage you to read it HERE. This is a topic that our school takes very seriously. Thank you for reading this important message, reviewing district policy and for helping us make Pacific Crest Middle School an inclusive and kind place for all students!

Info For Parents From PCMS Admin & Counseling

There has been an uptick recently in parents/guardians reaching out to our team asking for support for their child. We have observed that student behavior typically changes when they begin using substances or when they are attempting to use less.

Principal’s Hello

Dear PCMS families,

It was another fun and dynamic week of middle school here in The Nest! And we have a lot to look forward to: spring conferences next week, elective forecasting for our rising 7th and 8th graders, an all-school assembly, a super cool and informative presentation for parents on May 5th, state testing, FIELD DAY! (Shh! This last one’s a surprise!)

I hope you all have a nice weekend with family. Hopefully the sun pokes through!

Upcoming Assembly with MOsley WOtta

On Tuesday, April 18th we have the privilege of having Jason (McNeal) Graham, better known as MOsley WOtta, speak at our all school assembly. Jason is a Windy City Heartland transplant living in Central Oregon. WOtta’s work spans nearly two decades of exploration in multiple mediums including writing, painting, performance and video. “Jason is an incredibly engaging speaker. Marked by rapid-fire thought and an infectious warmth and enthusiasm, the cadence of his voice almost implores listeners to perk up and join in” (Jerad Walker). This assembly will focus on being kind, making good choices, and learning how to positively express yourself.

Addressing our Dress Code

We want to share a few things regarding dress code as we near the end of the school year.

Have you heard of the brand “Cookies”? Or has your student asked for a Cookies shirt or sweatshirt? See information below:

  • America’s first $1 billion marijuana/weed brand is here and it’s named Cookies.
  • Cookies is arguably the most recognizable cannabis brand in the world.
  • Cookies was founded by Bay Area recording artist, Berner. His vision was to create a cutting edge streetwear brand that represented a blend of trend forward fashion, music, marijuana and an urban lifestyle.

Although PCMS appreciates students expressing individuality, we expect our students to represent Golden Eagle culture in a better way.

Code of Dress: Clothing and jewelry should not display pictures or insignias that are crude, profane, or sexually suggestive, or which advocate racial or religious prejudice, or which depict drugs, or alcohol or any illegal activities.

Also, as the weather starts to get warmer (we hope that actually happens soon!), we will start seeing a lot of tank tops and shorts at school.

Code of Dress: Student code of dress, at all regular school activities, will include the guideline that all clothing shall be worn in a reasonable manner that does not expose underwear (with the exception of straps) or private parts.

Upcoming Conference Information

Principal’s Hello

Hello, Golden Eagle Families! Welcome to spring break!

This morning I expressed my gratitude to students for their behavior. In October, students earned a total of 142 referrals. That’s an average of 8 referrals per school day. In February, students earned a total of 55 referrals. That’s an average of only 3 referrals per school day. That’s more than a 60% decrease, which is amazing! And who earned the lowest number of referrals in February? Our 8th graders! They dropped 75%!

This is the kind of leadership I expect from these students. I’m happy to see them head into the end of their middle school years showing this kind of leadership.

I hope you all have a restful break with family. We’ll see you all soon.

Sean

Principal’s Hello

Happy St. Patrick’s Day, PCMS families! We have a ton of students wearing green today, and many contributed to both the Lucky Enzo fundraiser and our Robotics fundraiser. Our students raised several hundred dollars for both efforts. Nice work, Golden Eagles!

Next week is our final week before spring break. It should be a good one. The sun is shining, more and more students are going outside during lunch, and student behavior is going well. Last month, our referrals were at an all-time low.

Thanks for your teamwork, everyone. It takes a village!

Principal’s Hello

Hello, Families!

This was a great week in the nest! We celebrated our classified employees who help immensely to make this big and messy and fun thing called middle school happen. We hosted a culture walk with the University of Washington, district employees, and other principals. And we had some more powerful conversations as grade-level teams about students who need a little extra support.

Thank you to those intrepid parents who braved the roads this morning to join me at our second Principal’s Coffee. I enjoy these discussions immensely, and I always learn something. From our first Principal’s Coffee, I got the idea (from y’all) to send the 9th grade teachers at Summit a survey about academic readiness. (Stay tuned for results!)

From this morning’s talk, I learned that parents want some engaging and informative presentations/speakers/content about how to do this crazy, messy, but, ultimately, meaningful thing called middle school parenting. I will marinate on that feedback and see what we might be able to put together for you soon.

As always, thank you for your partnership, and have a fantastic weekend!

Sean

Grading Website

Check out the district’s new website on grading in Bend-La Pine Schools:

High School Forecasting

Forecasting (choosing classes) for 9th grade is happening next week for students attending Summit High School and Bend Senior High School. Counselors from each school will be here at Pacific Crest on Tuesday, March 14th to begin the two-day process. If your student is attending Summit High School, please review one of the below flyers. Students attending any other high school will be contacted directly by the high school to begin the forecasting process. All 8th grade students have been prepped and are excited about this exciting transition!

Principal’s Hello!

Hey, everyone! It’s another beautiful, sunny, and cold day at Pacific Crest!

We had another awesome week of learning. Our band and orchestra students prepared for their big shows in a couple weeks. Our 6th graders prepared for their environmental science trip to Skyliners next week. And everyone learned to play pickleball…because it’s Bend! You have to play pickleball!

Have a great weekend with your families, everyone. I challenge you to slow down, savor every moment, and hug your kids extra tight. They’re growing up fast!

Sean

Parking at Businesses at Lolo & Skyliner Ranch Rd.

We know the after-school rush is real, parking can be challenging, and we’re all in a hurry! But please don’t park in the business lot on Skyliner Ranch and Lolo. (These are the businesses like Ruffwear, Crow’s Feet, etc.) These businesses have limited spots, and we cannot park there if we’re not actually going into those stores.

Thanks for understanding! Let’s be good neighbors, because Northwest Bend is awesome! We have to keep it awesome!

A Message from PCCO President, Anne Westerhoff

This Friday, March 3 is a perfect day to treat our fabulous PCMS staff to some comfort food. A baked potato and soup bar seems to be the perfect thing during cold weather. I know some of you have some amazing recipes to share. Click here to sign-up for items to contribute to this wintery feast. There is a nice mix of homemade and grab-n-go items to select from. If you wish to help with set-up or clean-up, remember you must be a cleared volunteer. Contact Deb Mullen at [email protected] or (541) 355-7801 to verify your clearance status. We truly appreciate your time, effort and generosity. Don’t forget to follow us on social media: @pacificcrestco.

Scoliosis Screening at PCMS

The Bend – La Pine Schools nursing team will be doing free scoliosis screenings on Thursday March 9th for 8th grade boys and girls and 6th grade girls at Pacific Crest Middle School. This quick and basic check will screen for abnormal curvatures of the spine. Any students that have questionable findings will receive a free follow up screening at school from an orthopedic health care provider from a local clinic at the end of the school year.

If you do not want to have your student participate, please email Nurse Hollenberg at [email protected] or deliver a handwritten note to the school Attendance Office on or before March 9th.

It is helpful if girls wear a sports bra or camisole top the day of screening.

If you have questions, please contact Nurse Hollenberg at (541) 355-6922.

Sparrow Enzo Fundraising and Community Service Vouchers

Thank you PCMS Community & PCCO! We’ve had a great start to our fundraising efforts for Sparrow Enzo. Through donations of refreshments, decor and music, our Valentine’s Day Dance was not only a fun event, but we raised $1,000. Keeping with the “heart theme”, our Val-o-Gram fundraiser was awesome. We raised $1,200. Proceeds from both of these events will go directly to Enzo at the end of the school year. We appreciate all of the volunteer support as well!

In the month of March, we have a “Lucky Enzo Pot of Gold Coin Collection” which is where each grade level fills a pot with coins to benefit our Sparrow. This is a super easy way to support Enzo.

Last but not least, in partnership with local business sponsors, students can support Sparrow Enzo by performing community service. Spend a few moments with your family watching the Step Into Compassion video and Enzo’s Life Story. After your student completes community service hours and in order for local sponsors to financially support Enzo, students must submit their hour(s) using an online voucher form. Our school goal is to reach 600 hours. That is only one hour per student. We can do this Golden Eagles!

Here are some suggestions for earning community service hours:

  • rake leafs/pine needles
  • shovel snow
  • read a book to a young child
  • pick up trash at a park or in your neighborhood
  • offer to walk a friend’s dog
  • wash a car for an elderly neighbor
  • volunteer at a local shelter with your family

Principal’s Hello

Hello, families!

It’s another beautiful day here in the Golden Eagle nest. We have wrestlers competing at a tournament, and some of our volleyball and soccer players are out at tournaments as well. We’re looking at some beautiful weather as well for this three-day Presidents’ Weekend.

This week our 7th graders began their outdoor learning labs at Skyliners, our Tech Design students started a project to refine our lunch experience, and students in our 6th grade communities researched how climate change affects ecosystem and human health.

It’s a dynamic, exhilarating, fascinating time here at PCMS. I hope you all have a nice long weekend with your families, and we’ll see you back here on Tuesday.

Hats and Student Behavior

If your student wears a hat to school, you might consider asking them if anyone has ever tried to snatch it off their head. It’s a thing in middle school, which seems to go in and out of fashion every school year or two. Right now, it’s the fashionable thing to do.

Please tell your student that snatching another student’s hat is inappropriate, disruptive, and invasive of their space and property. We will make an announcement next week about escalating consequences for hat snatching, as it’s becoming a campus-wide disruption.

Thanks for your help at home with this!

Principal’s Hello

Hey, everyone!

We’re are psyched for our Valentine’s Day Dance! A huge shout out goes to our Pacific Crest Community Organization, our parent volunteers, our 8th grade WEB Leaders, and our activities staff who have all put together a fun experience for our kids. There are hearts everywhere! This speaks to our third theme this year: rekindling the middle school experience!

I was in some 8th grade classrooms last week for an hour and saw some cool things: Mr. Bjorback teaching rhetorical moves through sentence frames, Ms. Crabtree showing the effects of vacuum implosion on aluminum cans, and Ms. Dziurzynski introducing a function machine that spits out different answers despite identical inputs. I’m amazed at all the cool lessons I see in our classrooms.

I will try and do a better job of describing all the great stuff I see here at PCMS every day. Of course, so much of it cannot be captured in words, like all the fist bumps you randomly get from kids who are happy to be healthy, alive, and cared for by our amazing staff.

Thank you for your partnership!

Sean

The Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC)

Testing is scheduled for all 6th – 8th students later this spring. We are expecting all students to participate in the assessment. We plan to conduct testing at PCMS in late April / early May 2023. If parents choose to opt their student(s) out of testing, please click on the link the following link, complete and return the form to our main office by April 1, 2023.

These tests are designed to be one tool that assesses students’ mastery of Oregon content standards. OSAS includes the English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and English Language Proficiency assessments.

Students Vaping, Concerns and How to Help

Bend-La Pine Schools middle and high schools are concerned about students vaping at school and while in the community. Although most Bend-La Pine Schools students are not vaping, youth vaping is still concerning because of the health risks and impact on learning.

Parents and guardians, please read this letter from your school about the following:

  • How families can protect their child from vaping,
  • What our schools are doing to prevent and address vaping and other youth health issues, and
  • Why students’ vaping is a concern.

Additionally, you can listen to the recent Supe’s On podcast called “How vaping is affecting our schools and what we can do to help.”
